    Beschreibung: Since the compilation of the last version of the Italian Macroseismic Intensity Database (DBMI04), a number of new studies has been published. With the aim of updating both the database and the catalogue, recent studies published after the CPTI04 have been inventoried, together with old studies not used for the catalogue and records from previous parametric catalogues. The resulting inventory, called ISMI (Inventory of Italian Macroseismic Studies) lists nearly 10000 studies related to more than 3500 earthquake. The analysis of the inventory allowed to: i)compare the studies and made the best choice for the catalogue compilation; ii)trace back the reason why some earthquakes are no longer in the present catalogue (fake events, etc.). The inventory will be published in the future through a dedicated website. The selected studies provided about 24000 intensity data points (IDPs) for 500 earthquakes either unknown or previously not supported by macroseismic data. More than 31000 IDPs derive from studies that are new or up-dated with respect to what is in DBMI04. The new release of the database (DBMI08) contains as a whole nearly 85000 IDPs related to more than 1500 earthquakes, used for updating the Italian catalogue (CPTI08). These data come from a varied set of studies and are heterogeneous particularly as regards the georeferencing of the macroseismic observations. Each in-tensity data point has been associated to a place listed in a standardized geographical reference directory, ex-pressly compiled, according to a procedure developed during the compilation of DBMI04. The reliability of the georeferencing has then been carefully checked. The database is published on-line through a web interface specifically developed for DBMI04, updated for the new release.

    Beschreibung: This paper describes the main features of the Macroseismic Database of Italy 2004, which for the first time put together in a critical way the macroseismic data used for the compilation of the CPTI04 (2004) parametric earthquake catalogue. Data come from varied main datasets: i) DOM4.1 (Monachesi e Stucchi, 1997); ii) CFTI version 2 (Boschi et al., 1997) and, for the time-window 1980-2002, CFTI version 3 (Boschi et al., 2000); iii) Bollettino Macrosismico ING (BMING); iv) Catalogo Macrosismico dei Terremoti Etnei, Azzaro et al. (2000; 2002). In addition, data from recent historical and field investigation were also used. DBMI04 contains 58146 macroseismic observations related to 1041 earthquakes and 14161 localities, 12943 of which in Italy. The input data used for the compilation of DBMI04 were not homogeneous with respect to the use of the intensity scale and, mainly, to geographical reference. One of the main task was the organisation of a reliable geographical reference, based on the previous ENEL-ISTAT catalogue of the Italian localities (ENEL, 1978), which was updated by means of new data. Another task consisted in correcting some mistakes performed when associating the placenames quoted by the historical sources and the geographical reference. Some problems were solved using ad hoc conventions for dealing with observations not expressed in terms of macroseismic intensity. This paper presents the adopted solutions and the results, together with the web-interface through which the database is made available to the public (http://emidius.mi.ingv.it/DBMI04/).

    Beschreibung: Geology-based seismogenic source models are becoming the fundamental input for seismic hazard assessment at the scale of an entire country. In this work, we will illustrate in simple steps the complex process that leads from basic data to a fully-fledged seismogenic source model of the Dinaride thrust belt, running along coastal Croatia, Montenegro and part of Albania. We started from a layer of basic geological and structural data and explored a wide range of indicators of recent tectonic activity, such as drainage anomalies/diversions and displaced or warped geological markers. We then analyzed the interplay of these indicators with known or prospective tectonic structures. To the picture thus obtained, we added a layer with a revised historical seismic catalog and selected a few earthquakes for which we re-estimate epicenter and magnitude. At the end of our analyses we combined all these data in a structured GIS database. With these data at hand, we also compared the longer-term indicators with present-day stress/strain data such as GPS velocities and earthquake focal solutions. Following the approach already developed for the construction of the Database of Individual Seismogenic Sources for Italy, we developed a seismogenic source model for the Dinarides in which the better constrained seismogenic faults have been mapped and parameterized and made ready for use in seismic hazard practice. We believe that our experience in the Dinarides will become useful in unifying and formalizing the process of constructing seismic source models in other countries.

    Beschreibung: While the seismicity of the Southern Alps is high in the Eastern sector, corresponding to the Veneto and Friuli regions, it decreases towards West up to the Adda River. In the sector between the Lessini Mts. and Eastern Friuli the damaging earthquakes are clustered in a well defined seismic belt, where seismogenic sources responsible for earthquakes with Mw 6 have been defined in recent works. In contrast, the knowledge of the Southalpine sector West of this area is sparser; the area experienced some earthquakes with Mw〉5.5 and varied events with 4.8≤Mw≤5.5 the distribution of which is, apparently, random. For the area roughly defined by the basins of the Adda River to the West and the middle Adige River to the East, this paper reappraises the background knowledge of the earthquakes occurred before 1700. The investigation and the results are presented according to two successive periods, up to 1995 and from 1995 on. In the research performed up to 1995, the most important achievements concerned two different aspects: i) the assessement of several “fake quakes”, some of which were the object of paradigmatic case-histories; ii) the resizing and relocation of several, presumed damaging earthquakes. Though this round of investigation changed significantly the picture of the seismicity with respect to the Seventies, the research continued. For the period from 1995 on, the discussion focuses on the reliability of the available information; material that received little or no consideration before, new historical findings and comments to the seismological interpretation as in the most recent literature are also presented. This part includes also the discussion of archaeoseismological evidence of damage related to past earthquakes.

    Beschreibung: The study of earthquakes from historical sources, or historical seismology, was considered an early priority for the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) project, which commissioned a study of historical seismicity at a global scale. This was “The Global Earthquake History” (GEH) project, led jointly by INGV (Milano, Italy) and BGS (UK). GEH was structured around three complementary deliverables: archive, catalogue, and the web infrastructure designed to store both archive and catalogue. The Global Historical Earthquake Archive (GHEA) provides a complete account of the global situation in historical seismology for large earthquakes. From GHEA, the Global Historical Earthquake Catalogue (GHEC v1.0) was derived: a world catalogue of earthquakes for the period 1000-1903, with magnitude 7 Mw and over. Though much remains to be done, the data here presented show that the compilation of both Archive and Catalogue contribute to an improved understanding of the Global Earthquake History.

    Beschreibung: The description of the seismicity of the European region is today fragmented into an increasing number of earthquake archives, databases, and catalogs related to individual countries or even to part of them. Therefore, the compilation of a comprehensive, European earthquake history requires dealing with a puzzle of partially overlapping, only partially public catalogs, the background of which is compiled according to varied schemes. One of the consequences is that earthquakes in the frontier areas are often interpreted in a conflicting way by the catalogs of the bordering countries. In the framework of the European Commission (EC), 2006–2010 Network of Research Infrastructures for European Seismology (NERIES) Project, the task of Networking Activity 4 (NA4) was defined precisely to conceive and develop solutions to bridge over these differences. NA4 promoted the cooperation among existing national online archives, and contributed establishing new regional online archives compiled according to common standards. As a result, a first release of the distributed European archive of historical earthquake data, for the time-window 1000–1899 and for the large earthquakes, was published in 2010. Special attention was devoted to retrieve the earthquake background information, that is, the results of historical earthquake investigation—referenced to as studies in the following -in terms of a paper, a report, a book chapter, a map, etc. As the most useful studies are those supplying a set of macroseismic data points (MDPs)- that is a list of localities (name and coordinates) with a macroseismic intensity assessment and the related macroseismic scale—a dedicated effort was addressed to make such data available. The Archive of Historical Earthquake Data (AHEAD) distributed archive was improved and updated in the frame of the 2010–2012 EC Project Seismic Hazard Harmonization in Europe (SHARE), Task 3.1 European earthquake database, with the contribution of a number of European institutions. For the time window 1000–1899, it was AHEAD (AHEAD Working Group) that supported the compilation of the SHARE European Earthquake Catalog (SHEEC; Stucchi et al., 2013). This paper describes the AHEAD portal (http://www.emidius.eu/AHEAD/; last accessed March 2014), and how it was conceived to network the local components of the distributed archive. Although local historical macroseismic databases usually supply one set of information for each earthquake, at a European scale an earthquake still might be described by several studies, available from different archives. The AHEAD portal inventories and gives access to multiple sets of information concerning each earthquake, and allows users to get comprehensive information about individual earthquakes, providing the answers to the following questions: 1. which sets of earthquake parameters (time, location, magnitude, magnitude type, maximum intensity, etc.) are available for each earthquake? 2. what is the background information, or supporting material, upon which each set of earthquake parameter determination is based?
