    Description: We calculated the impact on Southern Italy of a large set of tsunamis resulting from earthquakes generated by major fault zones of the Mediterranean Sea. Our approach merges updated knowledge on the regional tectonic setting and scenario-like calculations of expected tsunami impact. We selected three potential source zones located at short, intermediate and large distance from our target coastlines: the Southern Tyrrhenian thrust belt; the Tell-Atlas thrust belt; and the western Hellenic Arc. For each zone we determined a Maximum Credible Earthquake and described the geometry, kinematics and size of its associated Typical Fault. We then let the Typical Fault float along strike of its parent source zone and simulated all tsunamis it could trigger. Simulations are based on the solution of the nonlinear shallow water equations through a finite-difference technique. For each run we calculated the wave fields at desired simulation times and the maximum water elevation field, then produced travel-time maps and maximum wave-height profiles along the target coastlines. The results show a highly variable impact for tsunamis generated by the different source zones. For example, a large Hellenic Arc earthquake will produce a much higher tsunami wave (up to 5 m) than those of the other two source zones (up to 1.5 m). This implies that tsunami scenarios for Mediterranean Sea countries must necessarily be computed at the scale of the entire basin. Our work represents a pilot study for constructing a basin-wide tsunami scenario database to be used for tsunami hazard assessment and early warning.

    Description: Geology-based seismogenic source models are becoming the fundamental input for seismic hazard assessment at the scale of an entire country. In this work, we will illustrate in simple steps the complex process that leads from basic data to a fully-fledged seismogenic source model of the Dinaride thrust belt, running along coastal Croatia, Montenegro and part of Albania. We started from a layer of basic geological and structural data and explored a wide range of indicators of recent tectonic activity, such as drainage anomalies/diversions and displaced or warped geological markers. We then analyzed the interplay of these indicators with known or prospective tectonic structures. To the picture thus obtained, we added a layer with a revised historical seismic catalog and selected a few earthquakes for which we re-estimate epicenter and magnitude. At the end of our analyses we combined all these data in a structured GIS database. With these data at hand, we also compared the longer-term indicators with present-day stress/strain data such as GPS velocities and earthquake focal solutions. Following the approach already developed for the construction of the Database of Individual Seismogenic Sources for Italy, we developed a seismogenic source model for the Dinarides in which the better constrained seismogenic faults have been mapped and parameterized and made ready for use in seismic hazard practice. We believe that our experience in the Dinarides will become useful in unifying and formalizing the process of constructing seismic source models in other countries.

    Description: We calculated the expected impact on the Italian coast of the Adriatic Sea of a large set of tsunamis resulting from potential earthquakes generated by major fault zones. Our approach merges updated knowledge on the regional tectonics and scenario-like calculations of expected tsunami impact. We selected six elongated potential source zones. For each of them we determined a Maximum Credible Earthquake and the associated Typical Fault, described by its size, geometry and kinematics. We then let the Typical Fault float along strike of its parent source zone and simulated all tsunamis it could generate. Simulations are based on the solution of the nonlinear shallow water equations through a finite-difference technique. For each run we calculated the wave fields at specified simulation times and the maximum water height field (above mean sea level), then generated travel-time maps and maximum wave height profiles along the target coastline. Maxima were also classified in a three-level code of expected tsunami threat. We found that the southern portion of Apulia facing Albania and the Gargano promontory are especially prone to the tsunami threat. We also found that some bathymetric features are crucial in determining the focalization-defocalization of tsunami energy. We suggest that our results be taken into account in the design of early-warning strategies.

    Description: DISS Working Group has increased and updated the content of the Database of Individual Seismogenic Sources (DISS), and improved its functions and structure. New improvements and new data have been implemented as the new DISS release, version 3.1.0. DISS Working Group focused on furthering the characterization of the already existing seismogenic sources, both Individual Sources and Composite Sources. The Working Group implemented and completed background information and support data, images, and texts. New significant bibliographic data that augment information about DISS sources have been included. A new layer containing information about debated seismogenic sources has been included, concerning tectonic structures believed by some authors to be seismogenic and not yet included in DISS. This new layer contains an original critical review of the available data. We focused on the identification and characterization of six new Composite Sources in the eastern Adriatic area. These sources describe sections of the external Dinaric thrust system that affect the eastern side of the Adriatic foreland. The DISS web portal has been restyled and the W3C (html 4.01, css) validation was obtained for all pages. The overall look of the web site now complies with most of the requirements of the Italian Law n. 4, January 9, 2004.

    Description: DISS Version 3.0.4 This version of the Database contains over 100 individual seismogenic sources and over 80 seismogenic areas. Both categories are based on geological/geophysical data and cover the whole Italian territory and some conterminous regions. This version also incorporates: a totally new set of macroseismic sources based on the lately release historical earthquake catalogue: DBMI04, il database delle osservazioni macrosismiche dei terremoti italiani utilizzate per la compilazione del catalogo parametrico CPTI04 [Stucchi et al. (2007); http://emidius.mi.ingv.it/DBMI04/]; several updated sources and a few new sources based on the outcomes of the project INGV-DPC S2 Valutazione del potenziale sismogenetico e probabilità dei forti terremoti in Italia (Assessment of the seismogenic potential and probability of large earthquakes in Italy). This version also includes: over 2,100 selected references to scientific literature specifically pertinent to the identified seismogenic sources; new source-specific pictures selected from the literature, such as geological maps, cross-sections, and photographs. This version of the Database was primarily developed for use among the scientists who participated in the project INGV-DPC S2 "Valutazione del potenziale sismogenetico e probabilità dei forti terremoti in Italia" (Assessment of the seismogenic potential and probability of large earthquakes in Italy) - as the contribution of UR1.1 (task 1) for the project - who are informed on all its possible flaws and limitations. All other users are therefore cautioned in using version 3.0.4 in any application. As a product of the same project were also DISS versions 3.0.2 and 3.0.3.

    Description: The Database of Individual Seismogenic Sources (DISS) was conceived at the end of the 1990s by a group of scientists at Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia. The database was designed to host data about seismogenic source models intended to serve as geological input for ground-shaking SHA applications and was continuously updated since then. In 2005 there was a big turn in this process as we launched a new version of the database (DISS 3) which augmented the database with two innovative categories. The first, now named “Composite Seismogenic Source”, was intended to overcome the inherent difficulties in identifying fault segment boundaries. The second, named “Debated Seismogenic Source”, was devised to host tectonic information about active faults that have been proposed in the literature as potential seismogenic sources but are not fully parameterized or are considered to be not reliable or have been deprecated by subsequent work. In 2005 the database was first made available to the public through a specifically designed web-based GIS application. This new database is now being widely used in various branches of ground-shaking SHA practice and tsunami hazard. The main strength of this database is that it stores fault parameters in a native 3D and flexible conceptual model. Lately, we also developed strategies to make it testable with independent data under a number of different tectonic and seismic hypotheses. During the years, DISS brought together a large amount of published and original data on Italian seismogenic sources having a potential for a magnitude 5.5+ earthquake and is now being extended to the rest of the Euro-Mediterranean area. We present highlights on the identification and characterization of new seismogenic sources in three key-areas in Italy, namely Lombardia/Veneto (Southern Alps), Adriatic Sea, and Abruzzo/Molise (central Apennines). These new sources describe youthful structures of the Alpine south-verging contractional system, the external fold-and-thrust system in the Adriatic offshore, and the extensional domain of the inner central Apennines.

Its IT infrastructure was also kept up to date and guidelines on how to prepare new records have been distributed to potential contributors (BASILI et alii, 2009). During the years, DISS brought together a large amount of published and original data on Italian seismogenic sources having a potential for a magnitude 5.5+ earthquake and is now being extended to the rest of the Euro-Mediterranean area. We present highlights on the identification and characterization of new seismogenic sources in four key-areas in Italy, namely Lombardia-Emilia-Veneto (Southern Alps, Northern Apennines), Adriatic Sea, Ionian Sea, and Abruzzo/Molise (central Apennines). For each of these areas we illustrate a combination of original data collected and interpreted by our group together with reviews of published literature. We will also outline contributions from several other scientists that collaborated with us during the two-year term of “Project S1” funded by the Dipartimento Protezione Civile (Agreement 2007-2009). The main novelties include updates of the geometric and kinematic properties of seismogenic sources, new geological data and numerical constraints on deformation rates, new interpretations of faults that are thought to have generated a number of historical earthquakes.
