    Description: The 91.15 m thick St. Thomas section belongs to the Middle Globigerina Limestone, which is the intermediate member of the Globigerina Limestone Formation, and crops out along the eastern cliff of the Delimara Peninsula (the south-eastern part ofMalta Island). The sedimentary record is composed of alternating calcareous marls and marly limestones with subordinated prominent bioturbated indurated limestones that are deposited in a pelagic environment. For the first time paleomagnetic analyses of a Burdigalian succession have provided reliable data that allow the identification of five magnetozones that have been correlated to the Astronomically Tuned Neogene Time Scale, spanning the Early Miocene C6n–C5Dn interval. Calcareous plankton quantitative analyses integrated with paleomagnetic analyses, allowed us to identify and date several bioevents that have great potential for Mediterranean and extra-Mediterranean correlations in the interval between ~19.7 and ~17.2 Ma. In particular, the complete distributional range of the calcareous nannofossil Sphenolithus belemnos has been recorded as follows: the First Occurrence (FO) at 19.12 Ma, the First Common Occurrence (FCO) at 19.05 Ma, the Last Common Occurrence (LCO) at 18.44 Ma, and the Last Occurrence (LO) at 18.02 Ma. In addition, the FO and the FCO of Sphenolithus heteromorphus have been documented at 18.29 Ma and at 17.99 Ma, respectively. A new paracme interval in the lower part of the range of this species is described between 17.56 and 17.31 Ma. Concerning the planktonic Foraminifera, the main bioevents are the Common Interval top of Paragloborotalia siakensis at 19.55 Ma, a Common Interval of Globoquadrina dehiscens between 19.34 and 18.48 Ma, the Globigerinoides subquadratus FO at 18.43 Ma, and the onset of an acme interval of Paragloborotalia acrostoma that changes its coiling from random to prevalently sinistral at the same time, at 18.40 Ma. These new biostratigraphic data allowed us to place the succession in the standard Mediterranean calcareous plankton zonal schemes and to make some amendments to these schemes. The FCO of S. belemnos was revealed a more reliable marker than its FO for the base of the MNN3a Zone.With regard to the planktonic Foraminifera, the P. acrostoma AB-r/s has been used as a subzonal marker of the G. dehiscens/Catapsydrax dissimilis Zone, which now comprises three subzones instead of two. The deep marine paleoenvironmental setting, the excellent outcrops and the recognition of a continuous succession of bio-magnetostratigraphic events suggest that the St. Thomas section should be considered as a reference section for the lower Burdigalian of theMediterranean area and for future studies in the definition of the Burdigalian GSSP.

    Description: A 160 m thick Pliocene-Pleistocene sedimentary succession, cropping out in NE Sicily (Rometta Succession), was subdivided into three unconformity-bounded units, overlying deformed bedrock: (i) a Middle Pliocene sandymarly R1 unit; (ii) an Upper Pliocene-Lower Pleistocene biocalcarenitic R2 unit; (iii) a Middle Pleistocene mudstone R3 unit. The R2 unit is composed of at least three sub-units, bounded by truncation surfaces, and showing aggradational patterns of strata. Each of these sub-units records a sudden seaward-shifting of the facies tract. A stratigraphic gap of ~870 kyr at the R1/R2 boundary, marks an abrupt change from offshore transition to shoreface environments. A second gap of ~260 kyr at the R2/R3 boundary corresponds to a sudden deepening of the environments, from shoreface to fully offshore. The Rometta units represent three incomplete, tectonically-enhanced depositional sequences. The R1 unit is a HST of a lower sequence, marked at the top by a slightly angular unconformity. The R2 unit is a HST of a younger depositional sequence, aggrading above a ravinement surface. During these relative sea level still-stands, the local tectonic uplift combined with the high-frequency eustatic oscillations, produced three forward-stepping sets of minor sequences within the R2 HST, simulating the typical FSST stratigraphic arrangement. The top of the R2 is bounded by an erosive surface, representing the transgressive surface of the subsequent R3 depositional sequence. The R3 unit is a late TST+HST of a Pliocene-Pleistocene sequence, the LST of which probably occurs basinward. The foresetted R2 biocalcarenites are unimodal in their paleocurrents. This feature resulted from shore-directed wind stress, applied to the water surface and reflected by a steep paleocoast, generating basinward-directed bottom currents.

    Description: We propose a revision of the calcareous plankton biostratigraphy of the upper Burdigalian/early Langhian interval (Early/MiddleMiocene) of theDSDPHole 608 succession (northeastern Atlantic Ocean), one of themost complete open-ocean Miocene sequence. We detected a set of calcareous plankton events through a 26m thick succession (320-346 mbsf), spanning the interval from 14.969 to 17.268 Ma, chronologically constrained through paleomagnetic and astrochronological data. “Standard” bioevents were tested and in some cases they resulted poorly applicable to the investigated succession. Conversely, the quantitative biostratigraphic analysis highlighted additional biohorizons (Helicosphaera ampliaperta Last CommonOccurrence, Sphenolithus heteromorphus Paracme Interval, Paragloborotalia siakensisAcme “a”) considered till now restricted to theMediterranean region. This results in a better applicability of Mediterranean zonal schemes, providing a higher biostratigraphic resolution. Our results point out strict affinity between Atlantic and Mediterranean successions in Early/MiddleMiocene. Thus, in the perspective of establishing the Langhian GSSP, that according to the historical criterion must be located in the Mediterranean region, our results provide significant correlation tools between Mediterranean and open-ocean successions.

    Description: We present the results of a stratigraphic study carried out on the Lower Miocene “La Moria” section (43°30’13.9’’N, 12°35’39.1’’E), outcropping in the neighborhoods of the Cantiano village (Marche Region, Central Italy). The succession, about 55 m thick, shows in its lower part, the transition between the Bisciaro and the Schlier Formations (Auctorum). The first is represented by few meters of indurated marly limestones and the second by about 50 meters of blue marly clays, interbedded by thin calcareous horizons in the uppermost portion. According to the existing literature the succession yields the so-called “Piero della Francesca” horizon, a biotite rich level few centimeters thick, radiometrically dated at 17.1 Ma (Deino et al., 1997), occurring at about 24 meters from the base of the section. The succession has been sampled for both magnetostratigraphic and calcareous plankton analyses. In spite of the absence of magnetic signal in the first 12 meters of the section, satisfactory results have been obtained for most of the examined succession. The calcareous plankton content shows different degree of preservation, being better for the calcareous nannofossil and worse for the planktonic foraminifers. Nevertheless, a set of useful biohorizons have been detected, which have been dated through the integration with the magnetostratigraphic data. The present study provides interesting results whose value is amplified considering the scarsity of Miocene Mediterranean successions characterized by reliable magnetostratigraphic and biostratigraphic data. In addition, the correlation of the present results with those obtained in the DSDP Hole 608 succession (North Atlantic) gives the opportunity to evaluate the sinchroneity of the detected biohorizons and to establish correspondence between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic in the considered time interval.

    Description: Results of high-resolution integrated stratigraphic studies (calcareous plankton and magnetostratigraphy) of three Mediterranean sections (La Vedova in Central Italy, Contrada Pesciarello in Sicily and St. Peter’s Pool in Malta) and one deep-sea core from the mid-latitude North Atlantic (DSDP Hole 608) are here synthesized. They are compared with those of previously studied deep marine sections in the Mediterranean including the historical stratotype, with the aim to select the most suitable section and criterion to define the Langhian GSSP (Global Stratotype Section and Point). This study significantly improves the existing magnetobiostratigraphic framework for the upper Burdigalian-lower Langhian and opens new perspectives for defining the Langhian GSSP. An extensive review of the first stages of the Globigerinoides-Praeorbulina evolutionary lineage pointed out that the Praeorbulina datum, historically used (and/or suggested) to approximate the base of the Langhian, coincides with the First Occurrence (FO) of P. glomerosa curva instead of P. sicana which is here included in the genus Globigerinoides. The FO of P. glomerosa curva occurs close to the C5Br/C5Bn.2n reversal boundary. As a consequence, the two recommended guiding criteria to recognize the base of the Langhian, i.e. the Praeorbulina datum and the top of Chron C5Cn.1n, can not be applied together, as these two events differ in age by ~740 kyr. The selection of either of these two criteria will imply a different duration for the Langhian: relatively short, in case the FO of P. glomerosa curva is selected, or longer and probably more acceptable, in case the top of Chron C5Cn.1n is selected. The primary calcareous plankton biohorizons which, according to our data, appoximate the top of Chron C5Cn.1n, are the Last Common Occurrence (LCO) of the calcareous nannofossil Helicosphaera ampliaperta and the LCO of the planktonic foraminifer Paragloborotalia bella. Other calcareous plankton events have been recorded close to the same magnetic reversal, such as a short influx of H. ampliaperta (Ia1) and the Paragloborotalia siakensis Acme0. The P. siakensis Acmea End (AaE) and the Sphenolithus heteromorphus Paracme End (PE) represent the primary plankton biohorizons associated with the P. glomerosa curva FO. Two of the three studied Mediterranean sections (La Vedova and St. Peter’s Pool), each from different point of view, are potentially suitable to be proposed as candidates for the definition of the Langhian GSSP. Yet, further studies on stable isotope stratigraphy and cyclostratigraphy, including astronomical tuning are necessary before the most suitable section and guiding criterion can be selected.

    Description: The Middle Pleistocene Transition (1.2-0.7 Ma) is the most recent re-organization of the global climate system which includes variations in the frequency and amplitude of glacial/interglacial cycles, increased ice sheet volume, sea surface temperature cooling and a significant drop in the CO2 atmospheric levels. Here we present high-resolution planktonic foraminifera data (mean sampling resolution of about 780 years) from core LC10 recovered in the Ionian Sea (eastern Mediterranean), between 1.2 and 0.9 Ma. Selected taxa, among them G. ruber, T. quinqueloba and G. bulloides, show significant periodicities that can be associated to orbital cycles, mainly precession and obliquity. The planktonic foraminifera based paleoclimatic curve exhibits a cooling linear trend that can be associated to similar phenomena observed in the North Atlantic. On the other hand, we refer to the influence of the North African Monsoon the occurrence of two peaks of the low-salinity tolerant species G. quadrilobatus that fall in coincidence of sapropel layers. Finally, we discuss the distribution pattern of N. pachyderma sinistral coiling, with peaks up to about 20% between MIS 30 and 28, and compare it to middle-late Quaternary records of the Sicily Channel and western Mediterranean.
