Description: Least-squares estimates of the response of gasoline consumption to a change in the gasoline price are biased toward zero, given the endogeneity of gasoline prices. A seemingly natural solution to this problem is to instrument for gasoline prices using gasoline taxes, but this approach tends to yield implausibly large price elasticities. We demonstrate that anticipatory behavior provides an important explanation for this result. Gasoline buyers increase purchases before tax increases and delay purchases before tax decreases, rendering the tax instrument endogenous. Including suitable leads and lags in the regression restores the validity of the IV estimator, resulting in much lower elasticity estimates.

Description: Traditional least squares estimates of the responsiveness of gasoline consumption to changes in gasoline prices are biased toward zero, given the endogeneity of gasoline prices. A seemingly natural solution to this problem is to instrument for gasoline prices using gasoline taxes, but this approach tends to yield implausibly large price elasticities. We demonstrate that anticipatory behavior provides an important explanation for this result. We provide evidence that gasoline buyers increase gasoline purchases before tax increases and delay gasoline purchases before tax decreases. This intertemporal substitution renders the tax instrument endogenous, invalidating conventional IV analysis. We show that including suitable leads and lags in the regression restores the validity of the IV estimator, resulting in much lower and more plausible elasticity estimates. Our analysis has implications more broadly for the IV analysis of markets in which buyers may store purchases for future consumption.

Description: The elapsed time taken to earn a Ph.D. in economics is analyzed with data from 620 (of about 950) 1996-97 Ph.D.s. The median is 5.3 years. A duration model indicates that those students at several of the most highly regarded programs, those supported by no-work fellowships, and those holding a prior masters degree finish faster than others. Americans, those who start jobs before completing their degree, and those who have children take longer. Kids slow the progress of women, but not of men. The only difference among fields is a longer time required for industrial organization and international economics. There is no difference in time-to-degree between men and women, married and single students, older and younger students, and those enrolled in larger or smaller Ph.D. programs. Fellowship support is more important for speeding the progress of women than that of men.

Description: This paper examines the relationship between publication practices and career paths in non-university research contexts. Successful scientific careers are closely linked to publi-cation activities. In the following we highlight the practices which lead up to the publication of scientific material. Our findings are derived from interviews with members of two Max Planck Institutes, as well as additional interview partners gained through those initial contacts, who allowed us to collect the necessary data for this project. In our analysis we draw from Bourdieu’s theoretical concepts of habitus and field to de-scribe and understand actors’ movements, while referencing various forms of capital to explain their actions. We also pose the question of how mutual expectations as well as social rules governing competition in the scientific field are generated. Bourdieu’s concept of illusio provides us with an analytical instrument to capture scientists’ increasing identi-fication with the “game” being played out in their field together with its associated rules. Moreover, concepts garnered from Anthony Giddens’ structuration theory allow us to ob-serve publication rules as at once enabling and constraining, a condition which we characterize as regulation. Drawing from these theoretical concepts and the results of our analysis, we demonstrate that scientists are subject to varying influences and expecta-tions depending on their respective positions in the field. In this context we focus on a specific subset of actors, namely doctoral candidates and their advisors. We will identify and discuss the expectations involved in this relationship in order to observe their trans-mission and reproduction, as well as the publication practices implemented in response to these pressures. We conclude with a discussion of the relationship between publishing and career paths in the scientific field.

Description: Seminal market microstructure literature identifies at least three important dimensions of liquidity: trading costs, depth, and resiliency. We investigate the relevance of each of these three dimensions of liquidity - separately and in conjunction - for the pricing of corporate bonds. Unlike previous studies, our sample allows us to cleanly separate the default and non-default components of yield spreads. We find that each of the above three dimensions of liquidity impact non-default spreads, with trading costs and resiliency being more important than depth. We also find that both bond-specific and market-wide dimensions of liquidity are priced in non-default spreads. Finally, we find that, even though these three dimensions of liquidity account for virtually the entire non-default spread, there does exist in some periods a small residual non-default yield spread that is consistent with an additional "flight-to-extreme-liquidity" premium reflecting investor preference for assets that enable quickest possible disengagement from the market when necessary.

Description: This article describes the city of mixed functions as a general principle of contemporary urban development against the background of the present discourse on urban planning. Based on this it looks into the advancement of everyday mobility as an exemplary indicator for social sustainable and equitable development. The meaning of everyday mobility and the possibilities of influencing it through urban planning are subjects of fundamental considerations. In the following part they are proved by using the example Wilhelmsburg, a quarter of the city of Hamburg...
