Description / Table of Contents: Chemistry and Structure Chemistry of Phosphides and Polyphosphides. 12 Pentaphosphides of Lanthanum and Neodymium, LaP5 and NdP5LaP5 and NdP5 are formed on heating (750°C, evacuated silica ampoules) filings of La or Nd metal with red phosphorus. LaP5 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/m with a = 9.768, b = 9.679, c = 5.576 Å, β = 105.25° and Z = 4 formula units. NdP5 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/m with a = 4.938, b = 9.551, c = 5.444 Å, β = 103.27° and Z = 2 formula units. The structure of LaP5 is a superstructure variant of NdP5. La or Nd atoms and P atoms form layers which alternate along [100]. Within a layer the P atoms are connected to a net of condensed 12-rings. The number of 2-valent and 3-valent P atoms corresponds with the formula . The P—P distances vary from 2.16 to 2.22 Å. Each metal atom is linked with 8 P atoms (averages: La—P = 3.071 or Nd—P = 3.016 Å).

Description / Table of Contents: Formation of Organosilicon Compounds. 92. Formation and Structure of Octamethylhexasila-hexascaphaneBy rearrangement and abstraction of CH4 at the presence of AlBr3 2 forms 3, and 6 forms 7, which is also obtained reacting 8 and 9 under the same condition.Lithination of 1, 1, 3, 5, 5, 7, 7, 9, 9-Nonamethyl-1, 3, 5, 7, 9-pentasiladecaline yields 12, which is trapped with me3SiCl to form 6. Convertation of 13 to 14 leads to 8 by reaction with ClSi(CH2 - Sime3)3. Compound 7 is characterized by NMR and mass spectroscopy as well as X-ray structural analysis.1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 9, 11, 11-Octamethyl-1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11-hexasila-hexascaphane 7 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n (No. 14) with a = 3296.7 pm, b = 1536.2 pm, c = 891.9 pm, β 91.71° and Z = 8 formular units. Both crystallographic independent molecules have approximately the symmetry C2. The differences of corresponding bond lengths, bond angles and torsion angles are unimportant. But there is a distinct dependence of the Si—C bond length relative to the function of the bond in the molecule (Averages: Si—C) (endo) = 188.4 pm, Si—C (exo) = 187.6 (pm).

Description / Table of Contents: Hydroxo Compounds. 10. The Sodium Oxohydroxostannates(II) Na4[Sn4O(OH)10] and Na2[Sn2O(OH)4]Na4[Sn4O(OH)10] = Na4[Sn(OH)3]2[Sn2O(OH)4] (I) and Na2[Sn2O(OH)4] (II) have now been doubtlessly characterized as the first Na-hydroxostannates(II). I crystallizes monoclinic in P21/n (a = 1522.4(5) pm, b = 830.0(2) pm, c = 1276.0(3) pm, β = 104.8(2)°, Z = 4, R = 0.047, 1137 Ihkl); II crystallizes orthorhombic in P212121 (a = 1450(2) pm, b = 1665(2) pm, c = 590.7(8) pm, Z = 8, R = 0.042, 1208 Ihkl). II is identical with the compound which was described up to now as “Na[Sn(OH)3]”. The new compounds contain the complex anions [Sn(OH)3]- and [Sn2O(OH)4]2-, whose structures are now proved. The oxotetrahydroxo-distannate(II) anion [Sn2O(OH)4]2- exhibits a syn-conformation with respect to the projection along the (Sn—Sn) vector. The two compounds crystallize with pronounced layer structures, which show direct topotactical relations with one another as well as with SnO. This relates closely to the fast formation of SnO from crystals of I and II.
Notes: Na4[Sn4O(OH)10] = Na4[Sn(OH)3]2 · [Sn2O(OH)4] (I) und Na2[Sn2O(OH)4] (II) wurden jetzt als erste Na-Hydroxostannate(II) eindeutig charakterisiert. I kristallisiert monoklin in P21/n (a = 1522,4(5) pm, b = 830,0(2) pm, c = 1276,0(3) pm, β = 104,8(2)°, Z = 4, R = 0,047, 1137 Ihkl); II kristallisiert orthorhombisch in P212121 (a = 1450(2) pm, b = 1665(2) pm, c = 590,7(8) pm, Z = 8, R = 0,042, 1208 Ihkl).

Description / Table of Contents: Chemistry and Structural Chemistry of Phosphides and Polyphosphides. 27. Bariumdecaphosphide BaP10Black, reflective crystals of BaP10 are formed by the reaction of BaP3 with red phosphorus at 1 050 K. The absorption edge at 765 nm corresponds to a band gap of 1.62 eV. The compound is resistant to both acids and bases. The thermal decomposition to Ba3P14 and then to BaP3 and other lower phosphides occurs at 725 K. BaP10 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Cmc21 (No. 36) with 4 formula units (a = 645.2(1), b = 1 258.9(2), c = 1 192.7(2) pm). The structure (632 reflections hkl; R = 0.019) contains the 2-dimensional infinite polyanion ∞2[P102-], which also characterizes the structure of TlP5. It originates through the connection of 1-dimensional pentagonal phosphorus tubes, which corresponds to those in the structure of Hittorf's phosphorus and KP15 (bond lengths P—P = 215.0-224.5 pm). Ba is coordinated by 12 P-atoms with distances of 332.7 pm to 374.3 pm.

Description / Table of Contents: Formation and Structure of the Cyclophosphanes P4(CMe3)2[P(CMe3)2]2 and P4(SiMe3)2[P(CMe3)2]2n-Triphosphanes showing a SiMe3 and a Cl substituent at the atoms P1 and P2, like (Me3C)2P—P(SiMe3)—P(CMe3)Cl 3 or (Me3C)2P—P(Cl)—P(SiMe3)2 4 are stable only at temperatures below -30°C. Above this temperature these compounds lose Me3SiCl, thus forming cyclotetraphosphanes, P4(CMe3)2[P(CMe3)2]2 1 out of 3, P4(SiMe3)2[P(SiMe3)2]2 2a (cis) and 2b (trans) out of 4. The formation of 1 proceeds via (Me3C)2P—P=PCMe3 5 as intermediate compound, which after addition to cyclopentadiene to give the Diels-Alder-adduct 6 (exo and endo isomers) was isolated. 6 generates 5, which then forms the dimer compound 1. Likewise (Me3C)2P—P=P-SiMe3 8 (as proven by the adduct 7) is formed out of 4, leading to 2a (cis) and 2b (trans). Compound 1 is also formed out of the iso-tetraphosphane P[P(CMe3)2]2[P(CMe3)Cl]9, which loses P(CMe3)2Cl when warmed to a temperature of 20°C. 1 crystallizes monoclinically in the space group P21/a (no. 14); a = 1762.0(15) pm; b = 1687.2(18) pm; c = 1170.5(9) pm; β = 109.18(5)° and Z = 4 formula units in the elementary cell. The molecule possesses E conformation. The central four-membered ring is puckered (approx. symmetry 42m; dihedral angle 47.4°), thus bringing the substituents into a quasi equatorial position and the nonbonding electron pairs into a quasi axial position. The bond lengths in the four-membered ring of 1 (d(P—P) = 222.9 pm) are only slightly longer than the exocyclic bonds (221.8 pm). The endocyclic bond angles \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \bar \beta $\end{document}(P/P/P) are 85.0°, the torsion angles are ±33° and d(P—C) = 189.7 pm.

Description / Table of Contents: Transition Metal Complexes of P-rich Phosphanes and Silylphosphanes. I. Transition Metal Complexes of Heptaphosphanortricyclanes R3P7(R = Et, i-Pr)R3P7 reacts with 1 equivalent of Cr(CO)5 · THF yielding R3P7 · Cr(CO)5 2 (R = Et) of 3 (R = i-Pr), containing the Cr(CO)5 moiety linked to an equatorial P atom (Pe) of the P7 skeleton. The reactions of R3P7 with 2 equivalents of Cr(CO)5 · THF, as well as of R3P7 · Cr(CO)5 with 1 equivalent of Cr(CO)5 · THF, yield R3P7 · 2 Cr(CO)5 (5 and 7), containing one Cr(CO)5 group linked to a Pe atom, the other one to a Pb atom in the three membered ring of the P7 skeleton. Compounds 2, 3, 5, and 7 from yellow solutions and yellow crystals. From solutions of 5 and 7, resp., red crystals of R3P7 · Cr(CO)5 · Cr(CO)4 (6 and 8) precipitate, having the Cr(CO)5 group linked to one Pe atom and the Cr(CO)4 group bridging the two other Pe atoms. The reaction of Et3P7 · 2 Cr(CO)5 5 with 1 equivalent of Cr(CO)5 · THF produces a mixture of the crystalline compounds 5, 6, Et3P7 · 2 Cr(CO)5 · Cr(CO)4 10, and Et3P7 · 3 Cr(CO)5 9. As THF solutions, the yellow compounds 5 and 9 gradually rearrange to the red compounds 6 and 10, resp. The reaction of Et3P7 with Cr(CO)5 · THF in a molar ration of 1:5 yields a mixture of the crystalline compounds 10 and Et3P7 · 3 Cr(CO)5 · Cr(CO)4 11. In 10 one Cr(CO)5 group is linked to a Pb atom, the other one to a Pe atom, whereas the Cr(CO)4 group bridges the two remaining Pe atoms. In 11 the Cr(CO)5 groups are linked to one Pe and two Pb atoms, and again the Cr(CO)4 group bridges the two remaining Pe atoms. Compounds 6 and 8, resp., are also available by reaction of R3P7 · Cr(CO)5 with (NBD)Cr(CO)4. By reaction of i-Pr3P7 · 2 Cr(CO)5 7 with (NBD)Cr(CO)4 the product i-Pr3P7 · 2 Cr(CO)5 · Cr(CO)4 12 is accessible. The progress of the reactions was monitored by 31P NMR, which also led to preliminary proposals for the structures of the compounds. These were fully confirmed by crystal structure analysis of 2, 5, 7, 8, and 11.

Description / Table of Contents: The space group of the sparingly soluble brown coloured bis-(dihydroxobor-oxalene-diamide-dioximato)-nickel(II)-tetrahydrate (C4H12N8O8B2Ni · 4 H2O) is P21/c with a = 9.25, b = 13.27, c = 6.61 Å and β = 92.7°. The structure was solved on single crystals. There are two molecules in the unit cell. Within the square planar complex the nickel atom is bonded to the four nitrogen atoms of the plane system of the two dioximato ligands (Ni—N = 1.84 ± 0.02 Å). Each of the boron atoms is tetrahedrally surrounded by two oxygen atoms belonging to the oxime groups and two hydroxyl groups (B—O = 1.50 ± 0.06 Å). Thus the complex has the conformation of a chair form. The water molecules participate in intermolecular hydrogen bonds. There is no interaction between Ni atoms.

Description / Table of Contents: Formation of Organosilicon Compounds. LX. Crystal and Molecular Structure of Heptamethyl-tetrasila-[2,2,2]-barrelan Si4C11H281,1,3,5,5,7,7-Heptamethyl-1,3,5,7-tetrasila-[2,2,2]-barrelan Si4C11H28 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pn21a with a = 12.293, b = 9.903, c = 14.018 Å and Z = 4 formula units. The six-membered rings have the skew-boat conformation with a torsion angle of 23.5° with respect to the molecular axis. The skew-boat conformation results from the interaction of CH3- and CH2- groups. The mean value for the bond length is Si—C = 1.881 Å. The distances Si—CH2 = 1.873 Å are somewhat smaller than the others (1.887 Å).

Description / Table of Contents: The Partial Substitution of Ge by GaAs and GaSb in the Clathrate Compounds Ge38As8I8 and Ge38Sb8I8In the clathrate compounds Ge38As8I8 and Ge38Sb8I8 germanium can be substituted partially by GaAs and GaSb, respectively. The substitution by GaAs was proved qualitative. GaSb forms independent from the stoichiometry of the reactants a clathrate compound Ge14Ga12Sb20I8 Ge14(GaSb)12Sb8I8 which crystallises in the space group P43n with a = 11.273 Å. The distribution of all atoms on the positions of the clathrate structure has been determined by single crystal work. The results are discussed.
