Description / Table of Contents: Whereas the tetracarbonyl compounds M(CO)4D, with M = Mo, W; D = 2,2′-dipyridyl (bipy), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), react with iodine in the molar ratio 1:1 at room temperature to form dimeric tricarbonyl compounds [M(CO)3DI2]2, at 150°C and a 2:1 ratio dimeric dicarbonyl compounds [M(CO)2DI]2 are formed. These new compounds in which the metal atoms of formal oxidation state + I are linked by two iodine bridges, , can also be obtained by interacting of [M(CO)3DI2]2 and M(CO)4D at 1:2 ratio.[M(CO)3bipyI2]2 (M = Mo, W) react with excess bipy to the ionic heptacoordinated dicarbonyl compounds [M(CO)2bipy2I]I.
