Notes: Absorption experiments of H2S into aqueous Fe2(SO4)3 solutions, concerned with a unique process capable of regenerating by biological oxidation the reactant from the products, were performed at 20-40°C in an agitated vessel with a flat interface. The absorbents were aqueous solutions of Fe2(SO4)3 with and without the addition of K2SO4, KOH or H2SO4 of various concentrations, which was added to change the ionic strength or pH of the solutions. The experimental results revealed that the species which reacts with H2S is FeOH2+. While comparing the observed absorption rates with the theoretical predictions, it was found that the reaction is irreversible and first order with respect to H2S and FeOH2+. The reaction rate constants were measured and correlated.

Notes: An original technique for simultaneous measurements of concentration and velocity in a turbulent liquid flow with and without a chemical reaction is developed by combining a two-component He-Ne laser Doppler velocimeter with a Ar+ laserinduced fluorescence technique. The mass flux and eddy diffusivity of mass are estimated from the simultaneous measurements of concentration and velocity in a liquid shear-free mixing layer downstream of a turbulence grid. The results show that the present measuring technique enables us to simultaneously measure velocity and concentration with high resolutions and that the approximation of the mean gradient diffusion causes about 10% error in estimating the mass flux in a reacting liquid flow.

Notes: A theoretical model for the process of bubble and drop formation in flowing liquids, applicable for both terrestrial and microgravity environments, has been developed by using a force balance. The contact angle variation at the nozzle due to the bubble motion and the added mass coefficient of the bubble moving through a pipe have been theoretically analyzed, considering bubble motions during its expansion and detachment stages. Predictions of bubble size of the model show satisfactory agreement with available experimental results in the case of normal gravity. The effects of the nondimensional variables on bubble and drop size are evaluated in microgravity conditions. In microgravity, the bubble is detached from the nozzle only by the liquid flow drag, and in the region of low liquid velocity the bubble size becomes much larger than that in normal gravity.

Notes: The rates of desorption of carbon dioxide from supersaturated water solutions into pure carbon dioxide or nitrogen gas stream were measured at 15,25, and 35°C in a baffled agitated vessel with a flat gas-liquid interface operated in a continuous manner. The volumetric liquid-phase mass transfer coefficients for the bubbles generated in the agitated liquid and the enhancement factors of the volumetric liquid-phase mass transfer coefficient for the free liquid surface due to the bubbling were calculated from the measured desorption rates and correlated as functions of the relative supersaturation of the solution and the liquid-phase Reynolds number.

Notes: Mixing time and power consumption have been measured in baffled, paddle-agitated cylindrical tanks with single- and double-impellers, and mixing efficiency has been defined by a reciprocal of the product of the mixing time and power consumption. The mixing efficiency and mixing time of double-impeller agitation have been compared with those of single-impeller agitation, and they have been related, through a circulation time, to the flow patterns obtained from the measurements of mean axial and radial velocities.

Notes: The physical absorption of gas by water in a tower packed with Raschig rings has been investigated. The liquid-side mass transfer coefficient which was separated by dividing the capacity coefficient by the wetted surface area is discussed from the standpoints of the two-film and penetration theories. A new and simpler dimensionless group is presented which correlates about 90% of the data reported, including the author's own, within an accuracy of ±20%.

Notes: This review describes recent advances in thin film studies of high-Tc superconducting cuprates. Emphasis is placed on epitaxial thin film growth technologies for LnBa2Cu3Ox (Ln = Y, Eu) cuprates, and on microwave device applications. An exciting area of this research involves epitaxial multilayer structures, such as a superconductor/insulator/superconductor (SIS) combination, and so preliminary results on SIS fabrication are also described.
