Notes: Efforts to prepare triphenylsulfonium hexafluorophosphate by metathesis between commercially available “triphenylsulfonium chloride” and potassium hexafluorophosphate failed to yield the expected product but gave, instead, in approximately 50% yield, a crystalline substance with well-defined properties readily distinguishable from triphenylsulfonium hexafluorophosphate. The unexpected substance is identified as bis-[4(diphenylsulfonio)phenyl]sulfide-bis-hexafluorophosphate, for which no previous reference has been found in the literature. Its identification is based on elemental analysis, NMR, mass spectrometry, and infrared analysis. Bis-[4-(diphenylsulfonio)phenyl]sulfide-bis-hexafluorophosphate was also prepared by the reaction of benzene with sulfur monochloride in the presence of aluminum chloride and chlorine, followed by addition of potassium hexafluorophosphate. The product is an effective photonitiator for the crosslinking of epoxide resins.

Notes: This study focuses on the effect of various processing and cooling conditions upon the subsequent melting and solidification behavior of blends of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and high density polyethylene (HDPE). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements have shown that the crystallization of reprocessed PBT is different from the crystallization behavior of virgin samples. Two melting endotherms for PBT were observed for reprocessed PBT and for PBT-PE blends. The nature of each PBT peak is discussed in relation to processing history, solidification conditions, and composition. The presence of two crystallization peaks for the PE component in blends of PE and PBT are thought to be associated with the restriction of molecular motion of PE in the presence of the second component. The relative magnitudes of the two exotherms of PE vary with composition and cooling rate during solidification.

Notes: The test results of 320 units of a laser initiated microdetonator are summarized. The commercially fabricated units used a lead styphnate/lead azide/HMX (1 mg/17.5 mg/13.5 mg) explosive train design contained in a miniature aluminum can that was capped with a glass-metal seal window. The test parameters were the laser energy, temperature, laser pulse duration, laser wavelength and nuclear radiation (5 × 106 rad of 1 MeV gamma rays). The performance parameters were the laser energy for ignition and the actuation response time.

Notes: A new ent-kaurane diterpenoid glycoside has been shown to be the main sweetening constituent of the traditional medicines Aster tongolensis and A. ageratoides native to China. This study involved the total 1H and 13C spectral assignment of the compound and its degraded product by means of two-dimensional NMR techniques (COSY, NOESY, HETCOR and TOCSY) and resulted in unambiguous spectral assignments, particularly in the heavily convoluted regions of the spectra. Concerning the absolute stereochemistry, the sweetener was determined to be (4R,5S,8S,9S,10,13R)-16,17-dihydroxykauran-19-oic acid β-D-glucopyranosyl ester through a combination of circular dichroism and 2D NMR techniques.
