    Notes: A process was developed for dehydrating aqueous solutions of hydrazine by azeotropic distillation with aniline as an entrainer. The ternary system hydrazine-water-aniline, which contains the minimum-boiling aniline-water azeotrope and the maximum-boiling hydrazine-water azeotrope, was studied by fractionation analysis to determine the position of the ridge or distillation barrier in the vapor and liquid surface. The studies showed that the position and curvature of this ridge were favorable for the production, by rectification, of a solution richer in hydrazine than the azeotropic proportions. The process comprised three operations. Approximately 70% of the hydrazine charged to the system was dehydrated.Entrainers that form binary minimum-boiling azeotropes with both hydrazine and water are discussed. Ternary systems with these entrainers have saddlepoint azeotropes that boil intermediate with respect to the other invariant components in the system.

    Notes: Amyloglucosidase (EC. 3.2.1.3), partially purified from an Aspergillus species, was chemically attached to DEAE cellulose using the bifunctional reagent 2-amino-4,6-dichloro-s-triazine. The action of the insolubilized enzyme derivative on dilute maltose and dextrin solutions was studied in a packed bed. A second and deeper bed was used to demonstrate the possibility of a continuous process for raising the dextrose; equivalents of “glucose” liquors of high concentration formed by acid hydrolysis of maize starch.

    Notes: Merozoites of the human malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, when treated with cytochalasin B, will attach irreversibly to red cells with formation of a vestigial internal (parasitophorous) vacuole, but they are inhibited from moving into the cell. The existence of an actin-based motile mechanism is implied. Immunoblotting, peptide mapping and the DNase inhibition assay have been used to show that the merozoite contains actin. It makes up an estimated 0.3% of the total parasite protein and is partitioned in the ratio of about 1:2 between the cytosolic and particulate protein fractions. In the former it is unpolymerised and in the latter filamentous. Most of the anti-actin-reactive protein in the soluble fraction and about 20% of that in the pellet has an apparent molecular weight of 55,000 and reacts with an anti-ubiquitin antibody; it is thus evidently ubiquitinyl actin, or arthrin, which has so far been detected only in insect flight muscle. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: This paper describes our use of organometallic chemistry to develop enhanced hydrotreatment catalysts. The approach involves (1) identifying the most active catalytic metals, (2) choosing precursors that will be easily activated into these materials under mild conditions, and (3) then increasing the surface area to provide a highly active catalyst. We describe our efforts in studying hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) reactions, including homogeneous reaction chemistry of the C—N bond, development of enhanced HDN catalysts for coal liquids, and some applications of organometallic chemistry towards coal liquefaction.

    Notes: An ESCA investigation has been made of the changes in surface functionalization for a series of polymers effected by means of low-powered inductively coupled rf plasmas excited in hydrogen and oxygen. Reactions in each case are confined to the outermost surfaces of the polymer films and the use of oxygen plasmas leads to extensive oxidative functionalization. Bisphenol-A polycarbonate and polyethylene terephthalate exhibit similar overall reactivities to both oxygen and hydrogen plasmas, while polystyrene is shown to be substantially more reactive than high-density polyethylene to the plasma treatments of interest in this work. Comparison has been made of the effects of straight hydrogen and oxygen plasmas and of sequential hydrogen/oxygen and oxygen/hydrogen plasma treatments.

    Notes: The boundary-integral equation medthod is particularly well suited for solution of stress concentration and elastic fracture mechanics problems. The method was not previously applicable to anisotropic three dimensional problems because no efficient technique existed for calculation of the required point load solution for an infinite body. A technique has been developed to evaluate numerically the anisotropic point load soultions, and used to generate data bases for various materials. An intrpolation technique is used to evaluate the point load solutions efficiently within a higher order boundary-intgral equation code. The effectiveness of the technique is verified by solution of problems involving both uniaxial stress states and stress concentrations.

    Notes: The boundary element method (BEM) has been known for some time to be extremely useful for the solution of elastic stress analysis problems involving high stress/strain gradients. In particular, the method has been extensively used for the study of both two and three-dimensional fracture mechanics problems. Recent analytical and numerical developments coupled with the general availability of greatly increased computing capacity have made both elastic and inelastic three-dimensional stress analysis feasible for complex geometries such as those found in gas turbine engine components.This paper summarizes the features of an advanced stress analysis method based on BEM for elastic and inelastic analyses of multizone or substructured three-dimensional solids. The elastic analyses involve isotropic or cross anisotropic media with thermal and centrifugal loading. The inelastic analyses include isotropic plasticity with variable hardening and kinematic plasticity with multiple yield surfaces.

    Notes: In practical applications, it is often necessary to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a solid, in addition to the static response under a variety of loading conditions. This paper discusses the calculation of natural frequencies and mode shapes of three-dimensional solids using the boundary element method. The method developed is based on the use of particular integrals of the elastic equilibrium equations, and employs only real arithmetic. It represents an extension to three dimensions of work previously carried out for two-dimensional problems in References 1 and 15. The method has been incorporated, for multiregion analysis, in the BEST3D (Boundary Element Solution Technology - Three Dimensional) computer program.Much of the work described in this paper was carried out under the support of National Aeronautics and Space Administration Contract NAS3-23697, ‘3D Inelastic Analysis Methods for Hot Section Components’. The program managers at the NASA-Lewis Research Center are Dr C. C. Chamis and Mr Dale Hopkins. The program manager at Pratt & Whitney is Dr E. S. Todd Results of the boundary element calculations are compared with analytical, finite element and experimental results.
