Notes: Heat transfer rates of both heating and cooling for dissociating nitrogen dioxide gas were experimentally measured under turbulent pipe-flow conditions. The range of the average Reynolds numbers for which these measurements were made was from 6,700 to 22,000. Thermal flux at the inside surfaces of the tubes ranged from 300 to 8,400 B.t.u./hr.-sq. ft. for heating and cooling. Wall temperatures of the heater section were varied from 100° to 400°F. and those of the cooler section were varied from 70° to 140°F. Mixed mean bulk gas temperatures for both heating and cooling were in the range 72° to 190°F. Radial velocity and temperature profiles were measured at various longitudinal positions in the heater section. For this equilibrium gas mixture heat transfer coefficients as high as 14 times those for the gas under frozen equilibrium conditions were obtained. Correlations which should be generally applicable to equilibrium reacting systems have been determined from the experimental data.

Notes: A modified Redlich-Kwong equation of state is developed in which the two parameters are expressed as functions of temperature. The critical values for the two constants in the equation are completely determined by the values of the critical properties of the gas. The optimum values of the constants for each isotherm (Z vs. P) are found, followed by a curve-fitting routine that obtains the constants as functions of temperature. The resulting equation of state predicts experimental helium compressibility data to within an average of 0.90% absolute error for data in the range 0 〈 pressure ≤ 700 atm., 5.26°K. ≤ temperature ≤ 1,500°K. For hydrogen, the prediction is to within an average of 0.79% absolute error for temperatures from 34° to 600°K. and pressures up to 2,900 atm.

Notes: Battery-powered, complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) devices have been used to develop a programmable function generator. When used in conjunction with commercially available, battery-powered potentiostats or electrometers and recording devices, the technique of field-based direct current stripping voltammetry becomes available. The instrumental performance of a range of modular, battery-powered instruments has been evaluated with conventional and microsized electrodes and compared with ac-powered laboratory instruments using conventionally sized electrodes. Stripping experiments with the field-based instrument and with microelectrodes can be carried out under linear potential sweep conditions because the limit of detection is similar to that obtained with transient techniques at conventional sized electrodes. Other simplifications to the instrumentation and voltammetric procedures that are valuable in field-based studies (e.g., neither stirring nor deoxygenation of the solutions is required) also are achieved by using microelectrodes and are illustrated by the determination of copper in a river water sample.

Notes: The 1986 Cold Spring Harbor Symposium was on the subject of human genetics; it was the first symposium at Cold Spring Harbor on this topic since 1964. In the opening remarks for the conference, Walter F. Bodmer first summarized the progress in this field since 1964. He then described what is presently known about the functional complexity of the human genome and discussed the case for a definitive characterization and sequencing of the human genome. The following is an abridged and slightly adapted version of this talk; it is reproduced courtesy of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory © 1987.

Notes: Application of Enzymes and Antibodies in Organic Solvents. This review outlines the influence of organic solvents on antibodies, enzymes and their reactions, the different kinds of enzyme-solvent systems, the various advantages of organic solvents compared with water and how they can be used for synthetic and analytical purposes. Main applications are the enzymatic synthesis of optically pure organic chemicals used as drugs, research chemicals, dyes or fragrants, as well as the analysis of hydrophobic compounds. Examples can be given of bioconversions in organic media by microbial cells and of syntheses with catalytic antibodies. Moreover, the full biotechnological potential of chemically or genetically engineered enzymes can only be exploited if the diversity of possible media is taken into account.

Notes: Analysis of underivatized trichothecenes using oxygen negative chemical ionization (ONCI) Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) with a Townsend Discharge source is described. The spectra of nine trichothecenes obtained using this method of ionization are shown. Analysis of several types of agricultural samples were carried out to demonstrate the capabilities of ONCI-GCMS as a screening method for trichothecenes.

Notes: We show that a certain matrix norm ratio studied by Parlett has a supermum that is O(\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$\mathop \[\sqrt n \] $\end{document}) when the chosen norm is the Frobenius norm, while it is O(log n) for the 2-norm. This ratio arises in Parlett's analysis of the Cholesky decomposition of an n by n matrix.
