Notes: To investigate the influence of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) of cellular phone GSM signals on human sleep electroencephalographic (EEG) pattern, all-night polysomnographies of 24 healthy male subjects were recorded, both with and without exposure to a circular polarized EMF (900 MHz, pulsed with a frequency of 217 Hz, pulse width 577 μs, power flux density 0.2 W/m2. Suppression of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep as well as a sleep-inducing effect under field exposure did not reach statistical significance, so that previous results indicating alterations of these sleep parameters could not be replicated. Spectral power analysis also did not reveal any alterations of the EEG rhythms during EMF exposure. The failure to confirm our previous results might be due to dose-dependent effects of the EMF on the human sleep profile. Bioelectromagnetics 19:199-202, 1998. © 1998 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: A study of the use of thermoplastic powder coated towpregs in filament winding was conducted. A suitable technique for manufacturing parts with adequate on-line consolidation was identified through an experimental investigation that compared several techniques. This process utilized a single compaction roller on-line consolidation head with hot air guns to obtain consolidation at the lay-down point on the mandrel. The addition of a heated pultrusion die between the creel system and the filament winder was found to produce the best process. Nylon 11/E-glass towpreg was used in this study. The effect of winding speed and compaction force on the quality of the resulting parts was determined in order to optimize the process. Only the speed was found to have a significant effect, with better quality parts being made at higher speed. Observations were also made on parts manufactured with polypropylene and E-glass towpreg, as well as on parts wound with helical patterns.

Notes: Six independent experiments of common design were performed in laboratories in Canada, Spain, Sweden, and the United States of America. Fertilized eggs of domestic chickens were incubated as controls or in a pulsed magnetic field (PMF); embryos were then examined for developmental anomalies. Identical equipment in each laboratory consisted of two incubators, each containing a Helmholtz coil and electronic devices to develop, control, and monitor the pulsed field and to monitor temperature, relative humidity, and vibrations. A unipolar, pulsed, magnetic field (500-μs pulse duration, 100 pulses per s, 1-μT peak density, and 2-μs rise and fall time) was applied to experimental eggs during 48 h of incubation. In each laboratory, ten eggs were simultaneously sham exposed in a control incubator (pulse generator not activated) while the PMF was applied to ten eggs in the other incubator. The procedure was repeated ten times in each laboratory, and incubators were alternately used as a control device or as an active source of the PMF. After a 48-h exposure, the eggs were evaluated for fertility. All embryos were then assayed in the blind for development, morphology, and stage of maturity. In five of six laboratories, more exposed embryos exhibited structural anomalies than did controls, although putatively significant differences were observed in only two laboratories (two-tailed Ps of .03 and 〈.001), and the significance of the difference in a third laboratory was only marginal (two-tailed P = .08). When the data from all six laboratories are pooled, the difference in incidence of abnormalities in PMF-exposed embryos (∼25 percent) and that of controls ( ∼ 19 percent) although small, is highly significant, as is the interaction between incidence of abnormalities and laboratory site (both Ps 〈 .001). The factor or factors responsible for the marked variability of inter-laboratory differences are unknown.

Description / Table of Contents: High pressure phase equilibrium calculations are performed with 5 (ethylene-vinylacetate)-copolymers of different vinylacetate content (8 to 42% VA). Miscibility gaps occur in the pressure range from 40 to 140 MPa. Measured pressure cloudpoints of a copolymer are compared with the calculated results. Investigations with inverse gas-liquid-chromatography provide thermodynamic data of the binary system vinylacetate + (ethylene-vinylacetate)-copolymer. The presented results show for the first time a complete picture about the demixing behaviour in this ternary system, where the monomer-mixturelines in the supercritical range. The miscibility gap is predominantly caused by the vinylacetate content of the copolymers. The influence of the distribution of molecular weight is clearly deminished in comparison to the binary system ethylene + (ethylene-vinylacetate)-copolymer.

Description / Table of Contents: In addition to the dependence on temperature and vinylacetate content of the copolymers, the molar mass distribution of the copolymers shows a significant influence on the high pressure phase equilibrium in the mixtures. This is demonstrated by experimental pressure-cloudpoint curves. The coexistence data are calculated with 5 different fractions of a copolymer with 33% vinylacetate content and reflect the experimental results precisely. Model calculations by a classical discontinuous calculation procedure allow the prediction of coexistence curves without additional molar mass-dependence of the model parameters. Further results are provided for the solubilities of the components in the pressure range of 30 to 100 MPa.

Description / Table of Contents: Optimizing the equipment for producing high pressure (ethylene-vinylacetate)-copolymers requires data and models for the phase equilibrium conditions at high pressure. Information on the system ethylene + (ethylene-vinylacetate)-copolymer is important for this purpose. Experimental results (cloud-point curves) and model calculations (coexistencecurves) are presented with particular attention to the dependence on vinylacetate content of copolymers.
