    Notes: Gas separation based on differences in intraparticle diffusion rates was achieved by four-step pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process. The application studied was the separation of nitrogen from air using molecular sieve type RS-10. Systematic PSA experiments were conducted in bench-scale equipment to study several variables, including duration of steps of the cycle, flow rates, pressure ratio, subatmospheric blowdown and purge, and column geometry.The test results were compared with predictions of a mathematical model (Shin and Knaebel, 1987). In all cases, the trends of product purity and net recovery of both theory and experiment were in close agreement. Since the theory accurately portrays the overall behavior of the process, the transport mechanisms embodied in the theory may provide insight into diffusion-induced separation by PSA. In addition, by reviewing the results of the parametric studies of the variables, it has been possible to gain an intuitive understanding of the relations between factors that affect each step, and hence overall performance.

    Notes: We examined the fine structure of the baroreceptors and the adrenergic innervation of the guinea-pig carotid sinus. The tunica adventitia contained many nerve bundles whose perineuria enclosed unmyelinated nerve fibers, alone or together with myelinated nerve fibers. Baroreceptors, which lay close to elastic and collagen fibers in the adventitia and media, were surrounded by “terminal” cells with ultrastructural features characteristic of Schwann cells and contained inclusions of various types. Morphologic features of the baroreceptors included densely packed mitochondria, osmiophilic lamellated and homogeneous bodies, clear and granular vesicles, lamellar systems, glycogen granules, neurofilaments, neurotubuli, and vacuolated mitochondria. In animals that had been treated with 6-hydroxydopamine, occasional electrondense endings (or fibers) were observed in the adventitial layer. The baroreceptors in the guinea-pig carotid sinus appear to have most of the morphologic features reported for other species.

    Notes: In the cellulase-cellulose reaction system, the adsorption of cellulase on the solid cellulose substrate was found to be one of the important parameters that govern the enzymatic hydrolysis rate of cellulose. The adsorption of cellulase usually parallels the rate of hydrolysis of cellulose. The affinity for cellulase varies depending on the structural properties of cellulose. Adsorption parameters such as the half-saturation constant, the maximum adsorption constant, and the distribution coefficient for both the cellulase and cellulsoe have been experimentally determined for several substrates. These adsorption parameters vary with the source of cellulose and the pretreatment methods and are correlated with the crystallinity and the specific surface area of cellulose substrates. The changing pattern of adsorption profile of cellulase during the hydrolysis reaction has also been elucidated. For practical utilization of cellulosic materials, the cellulose structural properties and their effects on cellulase adsorption, and the rate of hydrolysis must be taken into consideration.
