Description / Table of Contents: Contributions to the Chemical Transport of Metal Oxides. VII. On the Growth of Nickel Ferrite Crystals in the System NiFe2O4/HCl/QuartzNickel ferrite crystals with the size of about 1 cm and the weight of about 1 g were grown by pulling transport using natural nucleus formation. They were single phased, monocrystalline and contained disturbations as cracks and holes. The cracks are formed by adhesion strenghth of the crystals on the quartz wall and the holes contained inclusions of NiCl2. The growing process was divided into one phase with raising of the growing surface and one phase with the growing surface being constant.

Description / Table of Contents: Contributions to the Chemical Transport of Metal Oxides. VI. On the Nucleus Formation in the System NiFe2O4/HCl/QuartzThe validity of the reaction equation of the chemical transport reaction \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm NiFe}_{\rm 2} {\rm O}_{{\rm 4}\left({\rm f} \right)} + 8{\rm HCl}_{\left({\rm g} \right)} = {\rm NiCl}_{{\rm 2}\left({\rm g} \right)} + 2{\rm FeCl}_{{\rm 2}\left({\rm g} \right)} + 4{\rm H}_{\rm 2} {\rm O}_{\left({\rm g} \right)} $$\end{document} was proved and confirmed experimentally in connection with thermodynamical data by segregation of NiCl2 from the gaseous phase within the temperature range of 750 to 900°C and the pressure range of 0,9 to 5,5 atm. After that the times t from the beginning of the temperature difference to the formation of the first nucleus in dependence on the temperature difference ΔT were measured in the system NiFe2O4/HCl/quartz for the temperature range 900 to 1100°C and the pressure range of 0,07 to 6,3 atm. The measured values obey a linear relation lg t/1/ΔT, which was explained by derivation of an analogous relation from the Volmer equation accepting two-dimensional nucleus formation. The slopes of the straight lines decrease with increasing temperature. The proportionality of the slope and of the free energy of nucleus formation permits to explain this observation with the Pound model, after which the surface diffusion plays an important role in the formation of heterogenous nucleus. From the slope of the straight lines the free energies of the nucleus formation for a supersaturation of 50 percent were estimated to (5 to 15) · 10-13 erg/nucleus in the temperature range 900 to 1100°C. From this follow diameters of nucleus of 15 to 7 Å.

Description / Table of Contents: About the Formation of Oxidechlorides of Germanium at the Oxidation of GeCl4 in Homogeneous Gas PhaseAt the reaction in the gaseous system GeCl4/O2 at 1223 K and 3.8 × 10-3 mol × I-1 GeCl4 the formation of Ge2OCl6 up to 1% was found beside GeO2. In the infrared spectrum it shows an characteristic absorption band at 743 cm-1. The determination of the molecular weight and experiments of chemical transport in the system GeO2/GeCl4 exclude the simultaneous formation of GeOCl2. Ge2OCl6 is not formed above 1273 K, an important result for the formation of defect free and high pure SiO2/GeO2 glasses by the oxidation of the halides at the so called MCVD (Modified Chemical Vapour Deposition) process.
