Notes: The total energy absorbed by a craze during its development in creep is analyzed and calculated on the basis of a time-dependent theory of crazing. Experimental measurements of the craze length have been utilized in the energy calculations. For polystyrene the initial energy absorption in the craze region is found to be several hundred times that in the uncrazed medium. This ratio decreases sharply in a short period of time to about 50 to 1 and less and remains low afterward. For polycarbonate, somewhat similar behavior has been found. The initial strain energy absorption by crazing is about 200 times that in the uncrazed region. The energy ratio reduces rapidly to about 55 to 1 and tends to level off thereafter. However, in general, the amount of strain energy absorbed does increase as a function of time, as it should.

Notes: Polyurethanes were synthesized by the reaction of hydroxyterminated polybutadiene (HTPB) and diisocyanates such as toluene diisocyanate (TDI), diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI), and isophoron diisocyanate (IPDI). A number of fillers such as carbon black, kaolin, and antimony trioxide (Sb2O3) were used in these formulations. Mechanical and thermal stability of these polyurethanes were studied. Based on its properties, HTPB-MDI derived filled polyurethane was selected and evaluated as an inhibitor for a composite propellant. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Description / Table of Contents: Ortho-carboxyphenyldimethylarsin(CPDMA). o-Carboxphenyldiphenylarsin (CPDPA) und o-Carboxyphenyl-di(p-toly)-arsin (CPDTA) reagieren mit Quecksilber(II)-halogeniden zu Komplexen HgX2L mit X = Cl, Br, J; L = Ligand.
Notes: Ortho-carboxyphenyl-dimethylarsine (CPDMA), ortho-carboxpyhenyldiphenylarsine (CPDPA) and ortho-carboxyphenyldi(p-tolyl)arsine (CPDTA) react with mercury(II) halides to yield complexes having the formula HgX2L where X is Cl, Br or I and L is ligand. In view of infrared spectral data these complexes have been classified into two classes: (a) those in which the carboxyl group of the ligand remains free (ligand being monodentate), and (b) those in which the ligand acts as a bidentate group. The complex Hg(Cl2) · CPDPA is the only example of type (a) and has been assigned a dimeric halogen bridged structure. The remaining eight complexes are assumed to be monomeric. A tetrahedral structure is proposed for all the nine complexes.

Description / Table of Contents: Es wurden Zn- und Cd-Komplexe mit den Liganden o-Carboxyphenyl-dimethylarsin, o-Carboxyphenyl-diphenylarsin und o-Carboxyphenyl-di(p-tolyl)-arsin dargestellt.
Notes: The complexes of zinc(II) and cadmium(II) have been prepared with the ligands o-carboxyphenyldimethylarsine, o-carboxyphenyldiphenylarsine and o-carboxyphenyldi(p-tolyl) arsine. The complexes of cadmium(II) with all the ligands and that of zinc(II) with the latter two have been assigned the general formula M(OOC·C6H4·AsR2)2 and appear to be octahedral due to their polymeric nature. Zinc(II) forms complex, Zn(OOC·C6H4·AsMe2)2·Me2 As·C6H4COOH, with the first ligand which is pentacoordinated.

Notes: The paper presents a finite element formulation for the geometrically non-linear analysis of shells. The formulation is based on the Hellinger - Reissner approach and uses internal transverse shear stress unknowns to alleviate the problem of shear locking. A ring and a quadrilateral element are presented, together with three examples which demonstrate the accuracy of the elements.

Notes: The shock-treatment permit to achieve high mechanical characteristics of steels. The interpretation of this effect is based on the possibility to change the carbon solubility in iron under these conditions. Measurements of the quality factors (internal friction in power-1) confirm this assumption.

Notes: A pore-diffusion model is developed for temperature swing separation in a packed bed of sorbent. The model is applied to interpret experimental data for separation of H2 of CH4 in a packed bed of activated carbon operated in the temperature swing mode, at pressures up to 5.52 MPa. Experimental results on the effects of total pressure, particle size, adsorption temperature, and flow rate on separation efficiency compared favorably to the model predictions. The importance of pore diffusion in separation has been clearly demonstrated.

Notes: Pirt's model for microbial growth and product formation are reparameterized to obtain multiresponse models with common parameters. The dependent variables in the models are related through the available electron and carbon balance constraints. Covariance adjustment is used to reduce the growth model to a unit variate linear model with covariates. Therefore, standard multiple regression programs can be used to obtain combined point and interval estimates of true biomass energetic yield, true product yield and maintenance coefficient. This approach may yield “better” estimates than the maximum likelihood approach when an appropriately selected subset of covariates is used. Nonlinear estimation procedures are also considered; these procedures are efficient with few responses; however, as the number of responses per observation increase, they may require a lot of computing time. For illustration several data from the biochemical engineering literature are analyzed by the proposed methods.
