Notes: Glow discharge polymerizations of tetramethoxysilane (TMOS), tetramethylsilane/oxygen mixture (½ molar ratio) (TMS/O2), hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO), and tetramethyldisiloxane (TMDSO) were carried out for the preparation of thin, polymeric films with siloxane structures. The chemical composition of the formed polymers was examined by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) in connection with polymerization conditions, especially, a level of the radiofrequency (rf) input power per mass of the monomers (W/FM value). The polymers prepared from HMDSO at fairly low W/FM values resembled in chemical composition the conventionally polymerized polydimethylsiloxane. The surface properties of the formed polymers also were evaluated by the measurement of surface energy.

Notes: This review is mainly concerned with the conformational changes that depend on the dielectric constants for solvents for chlorinated polybutadienes (Cl-PBD) and their model compounds. The conformational equilibria of the rotational isomers of both meso and racemie 2,3-dichlorobutanes and 3,4-dichlorohexanes as the model compounds are discussed by analyzing infrared and NMR spectra. The solvent effect on the conformational parameter in Cl-PBD is explained by the variation in the conformation of the chlorinated part having polar C-Cl bonds. The matrix method is also described to calculate the temperature and solvent dependences of conformer populations.

Notes: A paper form solid electrolyte (PFSE) with good conductivity and flexibility was developed. PFSE is made of an inorganic-organic composite consisting of a copper ion conductive solid electrolyte of Rb4Cu16I7Cl13 (SE) and a polymer binder embedded in a synthetic fibre network. A PFSE with styrene-butadiene based synthetic rubber (SB) was found to give the highest conductivity among the binding materials that we examined. The SB content was changed from 10 vol% to 90 vol% in the PFSE, and the electrical properties and the damp resistance of PFSE were evaluated. Electrical conductivity decreased slightly with an SB content below 70 vol% and abruptly above 70 vol%. The damp resistance of PFSE improved with the increase of the SB content and was superior to that of the raw powder. The PFSE with 65 vol% SB showed relatively high conductivity, 3 × 10-3 S/cm, which was sufficient for battery use, and good damp resistance.

Notes: Bovine blastocysts were produced through maturation, fertilization, and development in vitro. For vitrification, solutions designated EFS, GFS, and PFS were prepared; these were 40% ethylene glycol, 40% glycerol, and 40% propylene glycol, respectively, diluted in modified phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) containing 30% Ficoll + 0.5 M sucrose. The embryos were exposed to the solutions in one step at room temperature, kept in the solutions for various times, vitrified in liquid nitrogen, and warmed rapidly. When the embryos were vitrified in EFS solution after 1 or 2 min exposure, the postwarming survival rate, assessed by the reexpansion of the blastocoel, was 74-77%. However, when the exposure time was extended to 3 min or longer, this rate dropped to 7-0%. This reduction was attributed to the toxicity of ethylene glycol. Of the embryos vitrified in GFS solution, 53% survived when they were cooled after 1 min exposure; as the duration of the exposure increased, the survival rate increased, reaching a peak (72%) at 4 min. The rate then decreased gradually with exposure time. In PFS solution, embryos surviving after vitrification were recovered only with 1 min exposure (33%), reflecting the high toxicity of propylene glycol. After vitrification in EFS or GFS solution, two embryos were nonsurgically transferred into each of 14 recipient animals. Of the 14 recipients, ten (71%) became pregnant; two resulted in early stillbirths, four recipients delivered twins (four alive and four stillborn), and two delivered single live calves, demonstrating the effectiveness of this simple vitrification method for the cryopreservation of in-vitro-produced bovine blastocysts. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: Plasma polymerizations in five silicon compounds having chemical formula of (CH3)3Si—X—Si(CH3)3, X = none, CH2, NH, O, and S atoms, were investigated by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and ESCA. The chemical composition of polymers plasma-polymerized was influenced by the X groups in (CH3)3Si—X—Si(CH3)3. Polymers, when X was S atoms, possessed no sulfur; and X was CH2 groups polymers rich in carbon and hydrogen atoms were formed. Details in chemical composition were discussed by IR and ESCA. Such differences in chemical composition reflected on gas permeability of the plasma films.

Notes: Cationic (BF3) copolymerizations and terpolymerizations of 1,2-butylene oxide (BO), propylene oxide (PO), and tetrahydrofuran (THF), have been carried out at 0°C in ethylene dichloride under dry inert conditions. Reactivity ratios of THF-BO, THF-PO and BO-PO systems have been determined with the use successively of 1,2-propanediol and 1,2,3-propanetriol (glycerine) as cocatalysts. Terpolymer compositions established experimentally compare well with those predicted by calculations with the reactivity rations determined in the binary systems. With the triol as cocatalyst, the existence of a ternary azeotrope was confirmed. Its composition is: M1(THF) = 0.125; M2(BO) = 0.205; and M2(PO) = 0.670.

Notes: The cationic copolymerization of tetrahydrofuran with propylene oxide was investigated with the use of boron trifluoride etherate, 1,2,3-propanetriol, and ethylene chloride as catalyst, cocatalyst, and solvent, respectively. The reactions were carried out in the liquid phase under a blanket of dry nitrogen at atmospheric pressure and in the temperature range from -10° to +20°C. Comonomer consumption was followed by vapor-phase chromatography, while the products were analyzed by gel-permeation chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance, vapor-pressure osmometry, and chemical endgroup analysis (phthalation). The investigation was directed towards the elucidation of the influence of the initial cocatalyst content, the initial mole fraction of the comonomer, and the temperature of reaction, on the kinetics of the reaction (rates of disappearance of comonomers, reactivity ratios, comonomer conversions and product yields) and on the characteristics of the products formed (composition, molecular weight, and primary and secondary hydroxyl content). An attempt is made to interpret the results reported in the paper.
