    Notes: The structure of the inner core region (L-glycero-D-mannoheptose/2-keto-3-deoxy-D-mannooctulosonic acid region) of lipopolysaccharides from Salmonella minnesota rough mutants was investigated. Using conventional methods (neutral sugar analysis, Smith degradation and methylation analysis) combined with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) of higher oligosaccharides (up to tetrasaccharide), the linkages of the core sugars of lipopolysaccharides from S. minnesota rough mutants, strains R4 (Rd2P-), R7 (Rd1P-) and R5 (RcP-) were determined as: with R representing H in R4, L-glycero-D-mannoheptopyranosyl in R7, and D-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)-L-glycero-D-mannoheptopyranosyl in R5, respectively. In addition, it is shown that heterogeneity within the neutral sugar part of these lipopolysaccharides is low.

    Description / Table of Contents: From Buerger precession photographs of SrJ2 (MoKα radiation) the lattice dimensions a = 15.22, b = 8.22, c = 7.90 Å and the space group Pbca are derived. According to the calculated and measured density (ϱc = 4.59 g/cm3, ϱm = 4.549 g/cm3) the orthorhombic unit cell contains 8 formula units SrJ2. EuJ2 and SrJ2 are not isostructural, but there are close material relations between their unit cells.
    Notes: Aus BUERGER-Präzessionsaufnahmen von SrJ2 (MoKα-Strahlung) wurden die Gitterkonstanten a = 15,22, b = 8,22 und c = 7,90 Å sowie die Raumgruppe Pbca abgeleitet. Die rhombische Elementarzelle enthält gemäß Dichtevergleich (ϱber = 4,59 g/cm3, ϱexp = 4,549 g/cm3) 8 Formeleinheiten SrJ2. EuJ2 und SrJ2 sind nicht isotyp; es bestehen aber enge Beziehungen zwischen den Abmessungen der Elementarzellen.

    Description / Table of Contents: The crystal structure of SrI2 was solved by means of a three-dimensional PATTERSON synthesis and refined by the method of least squares to a reliability index of 8.6%. The most striking feature of this structure, which represents a new structure type, is the sevenfold coordination of I--ions about the cation Sr2+. Very similar coordination polyhedra were found in the recently solved structures of CeSI and EuI2 (monoclinic modification), but only the former crystallizes isostructural with SrI2; the latter shows another connection principle of the polyhedra.
    Notes: Die Kristallstruktur von SrJ2 wurde mit Hilfe einer dreidimensionalen PATTERSON-Synthese gelöst und nach der Methode der kleinsten Quadrate bis auf einen Zuverlässigkeitsindex von 8,6% verfeinert. Das auffälligste Merkmal dieser Struktur, die einen neuen Strukturtyp verkörpert, ist die siebenfache Koordination von J--Ionen um das Kation Sr2+. Recht ähnliche Koordinationspolyeder wurden in den kürzlich aufgeklärten Strukturen von CeSJ und EuJ2 (monokline Form) gefunden, aber nur die erstgenannte Verbindung kristallisiert isotyp zu SrJ2; die letztere weist ein anderes Verknüpfungsprinzip der Polyeder auf.
