Notes: A realistic CSTR model was developed and verified experimentally. The reaction studied was the exothermic, base sodium hydroxide catalyzed decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. The model was used to evaluate the usefulness of the following stability analyses: steady state analysis, local linearization and Liapunov's direct method through Krasovskii's theorem. The effect of control valve hysteresis on the system was also investigated.

Notes: Modern control theory for systems with load changes is applied to distillation column control. Both linear and nonlinear distillation models are developed and tested. Excellent control is achieved by using an optimal multi-variable-proportional-integral (MPI) controller for systems with unmeasurable disturbances. When the disturbances are measurable an optimal multi-variable proportional controller with error coordination (MPE) is desirable. Various structures for distillation control have also been investigated.

Notes: This paper presents the development and real-time implementation of a time-optimal control algorithm for a continuous stirred-tank reactor. A multivariable time-optimal control law is derived and an Extended Kalman Filter formuated for on-line estimation and filtering. The work demonstrates the powerful capability of real-time computation and decision-making in optimal control and optimal estimation of process states.

Notes: A mathematical model is developed for a styrene pilot plant reactor. The steady state version of this model was used to optimize the location of a steam injection port part way along the catalytic bed. Significant improvement in reactor performance was predicted by splitting the steam feed between the reactor inlet and the injection port. Performance was measured in terms of market value of products minus a utility cost for the steam. Studies were also carried out via computer simulation to determine optimal operating conditions. An important result was the relationship of optimal steam-to-ethylbenzene feed ratio to the kinetic parameters which describe the main dehydrogenation reaction. A pilot plant was constructed and operated in order to investigate experimentally the predictions of the mathematical model. Instrumentation was designed and installed so that an on-line digital computer could acquire process measurements directly and establish operating conditions. The experimental program confirmed the improved performance by operation of the reactor with a steam injection port and the existence of an optimum of the steam-to-ethylbenzene feed ratio as indicated by simulation.

Notes: Present algorithms for the selection of design variables produce a single combination of design variables which results in a solution sequence of minimum difficulty. A new theory entitled solution mapping results in information about all optimal combinations of design variables. This theory gives detailed information about the structure of all underspecified systems of algebraic equations which do not contain persistent iteration.

Notes: Techniques are developed for using the structural information contained in algebraic equation sets to aid in the study of convergence properties of iterative equation loops. The concept of inverse mapping is applied directly in order to study convergence properties of sequences. For problems in which there exist both a direct and inverse path for the computation of iterative loops, direct substitution techniques will converge via one path and diverge via the other path. When an inverse path existed, the direct substitution method was superior to simultaneous solution techniques for the problems studied. Not all iterative loops have an inverse path. For problems in which inverse paths do not originally exist, rearrangement of the equations of an iterative loop can result in a modified loop for which an inverse path does exist. The digraph representation of an iterative loop aids in deciding whether rearrangements are feasible for a particular problem. When inverse paths cannot conveniently be obtained, direct substitution cannot be successfully used and simultaneous solution techniques such as quasi-linearization are recommended.

Notes: The development phase of the optical photolithography process has long been considered the most crucial, as it is the final image-forming step. Process monitoring methods have focused primarily on end point detection and have not used other inferable on-line information. This paper examines the use of mathematical models in conjunction with on-line development penetration data to determine process changes. An on-line sequential parameter identification scheme is used to calculate a current rate parameter value for the development model, and a Kalman filter is used to reduce erroneous observations caused by measurement noise. A powerful development monitor system results from the combination of real-time data, and on-line parameter and state estimation theory.

Notes: A new input - output approach is presented for optimal regulatory control of systems based on balanced state realization. State-space identification is achieved using input-output data and a balanced realization algorithm. Based on the realized model, an optimal controller design is presented to regXSulate the system outputs at desired levels. The optimal control algorithm is model-predictive in that predictions are made based on measured disturbances. It also compensates for unmeasured disturbances through integral state feedback. This control concept is tested using a continuous stirred-tank chemical reactor model.

Notes: The increasing complexity of process plants and their reliability have necessitated the development of more powerful methods for detecting and diagnosing process abnormalities. Among the underlying strategies, analytical redundancy and knowledge-based system techniques offer viable solutions. In this work we consider the adaptive inclusion of analytical redundancy models (state and parameter estimation modules) in the diagnostic reasoning loop of a knowledge-based system. This helps overcome the difficulties associated with each category. The design method is a new layered knowledge base that houses compiled/qualitative knowledge in the high levels and process-general estimation knowledge in the low levels of a hierarchical knowledge structure. The compiled knowledge is used to narrow the diagnostic search space and provide an effective way of employing estimation modules. The estimation-based methods that resort to fundamental analysis provide the rationale for a qualitatively-guided reasoning process. The overall structure of the fault detection and isolation system based on the combined strategy is discussed focusing on the model-based redundancy methods which create the low levels of the hierarchical knowledge base. The system has been implemented using the condensate-feedwater subsystem of a coal-fired power plant. Due to the highly nonlinear and mixed-mode nature of the power plant dynamics, the modified extended Kalman filter is used in designing local detection filters.
