    Notes: Black people have a higher propensity than caucasions toward essential hypertension. To explore the possibility that this racial difference relates to cellular Ca2+ metabolism, we measured 45Ca2+ washout and uptake and cytosolic free concentration of Ca2+ [Ca2+], in serially passed skin fibroblasts from normotensive black and white males. Depending on the experimental conditions, 45Ca2+ washout in these cells was described by either two or three exponential functions, whereas 45Ca2+ uptake was described only by a two-exponent function. There were no racial differences in 45Ca2+ uptake and washout of unstimulated fibroblasts. However, stimulation by human serum resulted in an increase in the 45Ca2+ washout that was higher in fibroblasts from blacks than from whites. The racial differences were expressed primarily by higher values of the apparent washout rate constant (k1) of 45Ca2+ from the largest and most rapidly exchangeable cellular pool. The effect of human serum was not related to its origin (blacks vs. whites). In 2 mM Ca2+ medium and 10% serum from blacks, the respective k1 (mean ± SEM; × 10-2/min) values for fibroblasts from blacks and whites were 89.68 ± 5.23 and 73.29 ± 4.0; in the presence of 10% serum from whites, the k1 values for cells from blacks and whites were 84.14 ± 2.80 and 76.36 ± 3.23 (overall significance of P .01). In Ca2+-deficient medium in the presence of 10% human serum, the k1 for fibroblasts from blacks and whites were 115.57 ± 3.76 and 102.15 ± 3.30 (P 〈 .05). Serum substantially increased the 45Ca2+ uptake in fibroblasts from both blacks and whites; however, racial differences were not observed. Basal levels of [Ca2+], were not different in fibroblasts of blacks vs. whites (46.8 ± 6.8 and 43.2 ± 7.1 nM for blacks and whites, respectively). However, the peak response of Ca2+ transients for cell stimulated by 5% human serum was significantly higher in blacks than whites (blacks = 963 ± 213, whites = 481 ± 162 nM; P = .0286). We conclude that Ca2+ regulation is different in serum-stimulated fibroblasts from blacks and whites and that, at least in part, this difference may relate to a greater agonist-induced mobilization of Ca2+ in fibroblasts from blacks.

    Notes: Rates of rotation about the C-9-C-ar bond of 9-(2-isopropylphenyl) fluorene were measured by 1H DNMR, 13C DNMR, double resonance, and a kinetic method. The kinetic data obtained by these methods were critically examined. The DNMR methods afforded satisfactory results if rate data obtained by total line shape analyses of complicated signals with couplings were used, and those derived from simple patterns were abandoned. Agreement among the data yielded by the four different methods was excellent, provided that the data which might contain dubiously large errors were excluded.

    Notes: This paper reports results of the second SIMS round-robin study on GaAs impurity analysis in which 16 laboratories participated. Three different types of SIMS instruments, including Cameca IMS-3F or IMS-4F, Atomika ADIDA-3000 and Hitachi IMA-3, were used for this study. The specimens were cut from identical multielement-doped GaAs crystals and distributed as common standards for the quantitative impurity analyses. The interlaboratory deviations in quatitative results based on the common standards were found to be 10-20%, except for some low-concentration specimens and the results for zinc. This was approximately half of the corresponding results produced from standard specimens provided by the laboratories themselves. The interlaboratory deviations of relative ion intensity between impurity and matrix were 〈50% for those laboratories employing instruments of the same type, except for low-concentration specimens. These results show that quantitative analysis to an accuracy of 50% can be performed without standard specimens by utilizing relative sensitivity factors for each type of instrument.

    Notes: A new fludized bed which is divided in a looplike shape by a partition wall has been developed for recovering trace elements from a large quantity of industrial water. The bed, a circulating fluidized bed applicable to a liquid-solid two-phase flow, is called a circulating fluidized bed absorber (CFBA). Adsorbent particles are mixed and carried along with water in the CFBA. At the upper part of the bed, the absorbent particles are separated from the water flow and recycled in the bed; the depleted water flows out of a water outlet. The CFBA is operated at two to three times higher velocity than conventional liquid-solid contacting systems. The pressure drop in the CFBA is in proportion to the amount of adsorbent suspended in the contacting section. Characteristics of the CFBA, including design considerations, are described.

    Notes: When thin films of liquid are produced by roll coaters it is commonly observed that the liquid film is not uniform but shows either regular or irregular patterns resulting from hydrodynamic origins. The appearance of the liquid film has been considered to be governed by the flow geometry and dynamics in a nip region between two adjacent solid planes.Experimental work was done to observe the flow geometries in the nip region and patterns of liquid film by using a roll-stationary, transparent flat plate system. Two fundamental mechanisms for rib disappearance in practical high-speed coatings were recognized. It was also found that the constant rib interval for infinite capillary number depends not only upon the minimum gap size but also upon the physical properties of the liquid. Experimental data are presented in dimensionless form for meniscus position, rib interval, constant rib interval, and for the critical or transient conditions of rib formation, rib disappearance, unstead ribbing, and centrifugal splash.Comparison of present results for the speed ratio U2/U1 = 0 with previous results for U2/U1 = 1 shows the significance of the speed ratio to the meniscus position and the rib interval.

    Notes: A reasonable analytical procedure of the overall reaction rate for the phase transfer catalysis with mass transfer is discussed. Alkaline hydrolysis of n-butyl acetate with a phase transfer catalyst Aliquat 336 (tricaprylmethylammonium chloride, Q+Cl-) was chosen as a model system and carried out in an agitated vessel with a flat interface. Overall reaction rates observed were proportional to the interfacial concentration of the actual reactant Q+OH- (the ion pair consisting of quaternary ammonium cation Q+ and OH-) for the hydrolysis in the organic phase. The interfacial concentration of Q+OH- was a unique function of bulk concentrations of the catalyst and NaOH, and the ionic strength of the aqueous solution. This behavior of the overall reaction rates was explained by the proposed model solution. The reaction rate constant, evaluated by fitting the rate data to the model prediction, was 47 m3/kmol·s at 298 K. It was 70 or more times greater than that of conventional alkaline hydrolysis in the aqueous phase.

    Notes: A new type of fluidized bed, called a circulating fluidized-bed adsorber (CFBA), was developed for processing a large quantity of water with high efficiency. Its fluid mechanical characteristics are reported, as well as recovery of uranium from natural seawater using a small CFBA. Using hydrous titanium oxide, granulated with polyacrylonitrile (PAN-HTO), as an adsorbent, CFBA ran stably for six days, the period required for the adsorbent to collect a practical amount of uranium. To predict the uranium adsorption performance of a plant-size CFBA, a numerical model simulating the adsorption kinetics was developed. The result of the numerical calculation by the model was in good agreement with the experimental data.

    Notes: Heterogeneous oxidation of benzyl alcohol using hypochlorite ion with phase-transfer catalyst is carried out in an agitated vessel with a flat interface. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and toluene are chosen as the best catalyst and solvent, respectively. Observed reaction rates are proportional to the interfacial concentration of cetyltrimethylammonium hypochlorite in the organic phase, which is formed by ion exchange between bromide and hypochlorite ions. They are reasonably explained by the proposed theoretical model for the phase-transfer catalysis. The reaction rate constant evaluated by fitting the rate data to the model prediction is 22.7 m3 /kmol·s at 303 K, independent of the physical properties in the aqueous solutions. The maximum yield of benzaldehyde is about 90% and the selectivity is 100% for the conversion of hypochlorite ion less than 80%.

    Notes: Succiylated cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (EC.3.2.1.19) of an alkalophilic Bacillus sp. was adsorbed on a vinylpyridine copolymer. The enzyme had about 25% of the activity of soluble enzyme added. No increase of pH or thermal stability of the enzyme was observed by the adsorption, whereas optimum temperature for the enzyme action was shifted from 50 to 55°C. The enzyme converted starch to cyclodextrins without significant loss of activity under the conditions of 4 times reusing of 6 hr conversion by the batch system or 2 weeks continuous reaction by the column system at 55°C and pH 8.0. About 46% of the potato starch solution [15% (w/v)] was converted to cyclodextrins by the enzyme, and 52% was converted by the simultaneous action of the enzyme and alkaline pullulanase of alkalophilic Bacullus sp.(No.202-1). These values were almost the same as those obtained by the soluble enzyme or enzyme system.
