    Notes: Results of a systematic study of the conditions for preparation of soluble catalase-dextran conjugates, using the cyanogen bromide activation procedure, are reported.     Notes: Existing methods of assessing the resistance of a polymer to environmental attack are of only limited use. A new technique, which utilizes radiolabelled diffusants, has been developed to study the diffusion of liquids into thick sections of polymer-and glass-fiber-reinforced laminates. This technique allows the construction of concentration profiles of the liquid in the polymer at any time, and diffusion coefficients can be calculated from short-term data. The application of this method of measurement has given a clear picture of the way in which water diffuses into vinyl ester resins and their glass-reinforced laminates. The effects of stress and damage on this diffusion pattern have been quantified. It has been found that the presence of stress enhances the diffusion, and that the diffusion coefficient is further increased by the presence of a stress concentration. No evidence has been found, however, to suggest that the liquid “wicks” along the fibers when stress concentrations are absent.

    Notes: Blending function interpolants on rectangular elements are used to construct an overall interpolant which exactly matches function and normal derivative on the perimeter of a rectangular region. This overall interpolant is incorporated into the Ritz-Galerkin version of the finite element method and a test problem involving the biharmonic equation is solved. The numerical results obtained demonstrate the considerable increase in accuracy of the exact boundary methods as compared with the usual method using interpolated boundary conditions. A similar investigation of second order elliptic problems with Dirichlet boundary conditions where the rectangular region is divided up into triangular elements yields the perhaps surprising result that blended interpolants on triangular elements do not necessarily improve the accuracy of the Ritz-Galekin version of the Finite Element Method.

    Notes: A series of blends was prepared with broad concentration ranges of polycarbonate (PC) and styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers (SAN) containing 5.5 and 30 weight percent acrylonitrile (AN). These blends were then injection molded, and their properties were measured and correlated with the morphologies of the blends (as determined by transmission electron microscopy). The toughness properties were shown to be discontinuous and very sensitive to composition of the continuous phase in the blends. The dart impact toughness remained high up to 30-40 weight percent SAN and dropped rapidly above this SAN concentration. The notched Izod toughness fell off rapidly at 10 weight percent SAN and greater. The strength and modulus had a more linear dependence on composition. Results of studies of the Tg by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) show the presence of two phases over the entire concentration and a small solubility of each phase in the other. The heat distortion temperature under load (DTUL) of the blends approximated a linear additivity curve for the components. As expected, the blends had much better clarity where the refractive indexes more nearly match (in the case of the 5.5 percent AN copolymer).

    Notes: The paper deals with the diffusion of two mineral acids, hydrobromic and sulfuric acids, and two simple dye acids, NOG (C. I. Acid Orange 7) and SY (C.I. Food Yellow 3), in water-swollen nylon 66. Anion self-diffusion coefficients were obtained by radiotracer techniques. The bromide ion and the SY anion self-diffusion coefficients show very little variation with concentration in the amino-dyeing region, whereas the H2SO4 and NOG anion diffusion coefficients are concentration-dependent. The variation of the H2SO4 anion diffusion coefficient with concentration is consistent with the formation of small quantities of the highly mobile bisulfate ion. The low SO4 diffusion coefficient may be explained by the interaction of this ion with single, fixed sites in the polymer. The variation of the NOG anion diffusion coefficient with concentration does not follow a simple D = D0[1/(1 - θ)] relationship at intermediate concentrations but the rapid increase observed as the available sites became saturated, i.e., as θ → 1, is consistent with a site saturation model.

    Notes: The paper describes the titration relations for nylon 66 samples of different endgroup contents both for aqueous and alcohol solutions. The effect of temperature change is also considered. The results are consistent with a zwitterion structure of the nylon, carboxyl groups being protonated on acid titration. The acid groups are shown to be weaker than the corresponding monomeric acids in aqueous solution, owing to their environment inside the polymer. Individual ionic affinities are calculated from the experimental absorption isotherms and are in agreement with values obtained from a simple electrostatic theory. The low sulfate ion affinity can be explained by assuming interaction for this ion with single, fixed, isolated sites.
