Notes: A polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-dechlorinating anaerobic microbial consortium, developed in a granular form, demonstrated extensive dechlorination of PCBs present in Raisin River sediments at room (20° to 22°C) and at a relatively low (12°C) temperature. Highly chlorinated PCB congeners were dechlorinated and less chlorinated compounds were produced. The homolog comparison showed that tri-, tetra-, penta-, hexa-, and heptachlorobiphenyl compounds decreased significantly, and mono- and dichlorobiphenyl compounds increased. After 32 weeks of incubation at 12°C, the predominant less chlorinated products included 2-, 4-, 2-2/26-, 24-, 2-4-, 24-2-, 26-2-, and 26-4-CB. Among these, 24- and 24-2-CB did not accumulate at room temperature, suggesting a further dechlorination of these congeners. Predominantly meta dechlorination (i.e., pattern M) was catalyzed by the microbial consortium in the granules. Dechlorination in the control studies without granules was not extensive. This study is the first demonstration of enhanced reductive dechlorination of sediment PCBs by an exogenous anaerobic microbial consortium. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Implicit difference methods for the wave equation in two space variables have been discussed with the help of a stability diagram. The difference methods of intermediate accuracy 0(h4+k2) have been determined. A method of order of accuracy 0(h2+k2) with minimum truncation error has also been found.

Notes: We present in this paper a nine-point, fourth-order difference scheme for the numerical solution of the quasilinear Poisson equation in polar co-ordinates, \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ Au_{rr} + \frac{1}{r}u_r + \frac{1}{{r^2 }}u_{\theta \theta } = f\left({r,\theta,u,u_{r,} u_\theta} \right) $$\end{document} with appropriate boundary conditions. A separate difference scheme of order four valid at r = 0 has also been obtained. The method is based on five evaluations of the function f. The numerical results of two problems obtained using this scheme are listed. The numerical results demonstrate the fourth-order accuracy of the scheme.

Notes: In this paper, we have derived some new higher order difference formulas for the solution of a fourth order parabolic partial differential equation governing transverse vibrations of a uniform flexible beam in one and two space dimensions using Richtmyer's approach and a direct approach. Two examples illustrate the utility of the new difference methods.

Notes: ADI difference schemes of two and three levels for the parabolic equations with a mixed derivative have been derived. Using the stability analysis and the principal part of the truncation error, a difference formula with minimum truncation error has been found. Comparative study of the two and three level formulas has been made through two examples, one with constant coefficients and another with variable coefficients.

Notes: We present the fourth-order finite difference methods for the system of 2D nonlinear elliptic equations using 9-grid points on a square region R subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions. The method has been tested on viscous, incompressible 2D Navier-Stokes equations. The numerical results show that the proposed methods produce accurate and oscillation-free solutions for large Reynolds numbers.

Notes: We attempt to obtain a two-level implicit finite difference scheme using nine spatial grid points of O(k2 + kh2 + h4) for solving the 2D nonlinear parabolic partial differential equation v1uxx + v2uyy = f(x, y, t, u, ux, uy, u1) where v1 and v2 are positive constants, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The method, when applied to a linear diffusion-convection problem, is shown to be unconditionally stable. Computational efficiency and the results of numerical experiments are discussed.
