    Notes: A model of diffusion controlled mass transfer in liquid surfactant membranes is developed for uniform emulsion globules having no internal circulation. The solute is assumed to react instantaneously and irreversibly with the internal reagent at a reaction surface which advances into the globule as the reagent is consumed. A perturbation solution to the resulting non-linear equations is presented. In general, the zero-order, or pseudo-steady state solution alone often gives an adequate representation of the process. Experimental data on the batch extraction of phenol from waste water are in good agreement with the model predictions.

    Notes: A general physical model of a typical batch extraction system employing liquid surfactant membranes is developed. The model takes into account the continuous-phase resistance and the interfacial resistance along with permeation through a composite emulsion globule. It also quantifies the loss in extraction efficiencies by leakage of the encapsulated phase due to membrane breakage. The physical model is easily adapted to apply to the case of transport facilitation wherein the solute is reacted in the internal phase to yield products incapable of permeating through the membrane phase. Experimental data on o-chlorophenol extraction are satisfactorily correlated with the model.

    Notes: A modeling and experimental study of the core-annular flow (CAF) was carried out with a viscous liquid membrane emulsion as the core and an aqueous solution as the annulus. A hydrodynamic model has been developed for stable CAF with a centered, nondeformable core surrounded by a turbulent aqueous annulus with or without a drag reducer. This model has been verified with data from flow tests with viscous emulsions in a horizontal flow loop of 3/4-in. (19-mm) tubing and a fullscale, down-hole well tubing of 2-7/8 in. (73 mm). By the use of this model along with the data, the effects of annular size on total and core flow rates and pressure drop are investigated for annuli with and without a drag reducer.

    Notes: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 2.45 GHz microwave (MW) radiation on dimethylhydrazine (DMH)-induced colon cancer in mice. The subjects were 115 Balb/c mice 4 weeks of age. The animals were divided into group A (control), group B (DMH), group C (DMH + MW), and group D [DMH + 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)]. Radiation (10 mW/cm2) was delivered dorsally with the E field parallel to the mouse's long body axis in an anechoic chamber. Radiations were administered 3 hr daily, 6 days per week, over a period of 5 months. The average SAR was estimated to be 10-12 W/kg. During the course of radiation treatments, DMH was injected once per week. The tumor promoter TPA was administered once per week for 10 weeks, from the third week on, after the initial treatment. The incidence of tumors did not significantly differ between the three test groups (groups B, C, and D; P 〉 0.25). However, the number of tumors, the size of the tumors, and the incidence of protuberant and infiltrative types in tumor-bearing animals were higher in group D compared to groups B and C (P 〈 0.05). No difference was found between groups B and C (P 〉 0.25). The study indicates that 2.45 GHz microwave radiation at 10 mW/cm2 power density did not promote DMH-induced colon cancers in young mice. The study also showed that TPA could accelerate colon tumor production if a tumor was initiated. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: A new approach to resist materials that exhibit chemical amplification is based on systems comprised of three structural units at least one of which is polymeric: (a) an aromatic moiety such as poly(4-hydroxystyrene), Novolac, or other aromatic compounds which are susceptible to electrophilic aromatic substitution; (b) a latent electrophile which may be polyfunctional and, in the case of this study, is a carbocation precursor; (c) a material which generates strong acid upon irradiation. Exposure of a film containing these three structural components affords a latent image of acid dispersed in the polymer matrix. In a subsequent baking step, the photogenerated acid reacts with the latent electrophile releasing a very reactive carbocationic species which becomes bound to the aromatic moiety. As one of the components of the resist is polymeric and multifunctional, the result is a rapid increase in molecular weight due to branching and crosslinking of the chains. In terms of imaging, this process translates into the formation of a negative image of the mask although under some conditions a positive image may also be produced. The system shows a very high sensitivity and can provide high resolution images devoid of distortion due to the absence of swelling during development.
