Notizen: Methods are presented for examining the consistency of experimental data for microbial growth where light energy is converted to chemical energy through photosynthesis. True growth yield and maintenance parameters are estimated for several sets of available experimental data. Methods of parameter estimation are presented which allow all of the measured variables to be used simultaneously for parameter estimation. The results show that a wide range of values have been found for the true growth yield and maintenance parameters. Values of the true growth yield range from 0.04 to values above those predicted by the Z-scheme model for photosynthesis.

Notizen: Available electron methods are presented and used to estimate theoretical energetic growth yields for photoautotrophic, mixotrophic, and photoheterotrophic growth of algae and photosynthetic bacteria. The theoretical yields are compared to experimental values reported previously. For photoautotrophic and mixotrophic growth of algae experimental values that approach and even exceed the theoretical values have been reported in the literature. For photosynthetic bacteria experimental yields are much smaller than thetheoretical maximum values.

Notizen: Blue-green algae, Spirulina platensis, is cultivated under photoautotrophic growth conditions designed to have nearly uniform growth rate throughout the fermentor by illumination both sides of a rectangular vessel. The results show that growth rate and bioenergetic yield are a function of light intensity. Several kinetic models are considered to express the relationship between growth rate and light intensity.

Notizen: Carbon, available electron, and energetic yields are determined from literature data for photoheterotrophic and mixotrophic growth. Maintenance coefficients and energetic yields corrected for maintenance are estimated using covariate adjustment methods for several sets of data. Results are presented and compared for anaerobic photoheterotrophic growth, microaerobic photoheterotrophic growth, aerobic photoheterotrophic growth, and aerobic mixotrophic growth to gain a better understanding of yields for these photosynthetic processes.

Notizen: The weight fraction carbon and reductance degree of algae are reviewed for literature data. Average values are compared with values for yeast and bacteria. The results show that the standard deviation and coefficient of variation are small as long as the algae are grown under adequate nutritional conditions. For nitrogen-deficient growth conditions, the storage of lipids has been observed; this results in values of weight fraction carbon and reductance degree which are larger than the average values.

Notizen: The structure and the properties of oriented polymer surfaces were studied for three series of uniaxially oriented films of polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). The surface structure was characterized in terms of relative crystallinity and molecular orientation along with topology and roughness by using FT-IR-ATR dichroism technique, optical microscopy and surface profilometer. In all three polymers, the surface orientation function increases with draw ratio. The relative surface crystallinity and the trans con-former also increases for PP and PET, respectively. In uniaxially drawn PP, the surface becomes rough with increasing draw ratio and the roughness is anisotropic with peaks and valleys elongated along the draw direction. For drawn PP, the equilibrium contact angles for four different liquids all exhibit anisotropy with higher values in perpendicular direction than that in parallel to the draw direction. In contrast, both drawn PET and PS films show smooth surfaces, and the equilibrium contact angles were all isotropic. When roughness is removed from the drawn PP by polishing without altering the molecular orientation, the anisotropy becomes negligible and the contact angles approach the value for undrawn PP. When surface roughness was created deliberately on undrawn PET and PS films, the contact angle anisotropy was clearly observed. Therefore, the anisotropy in surface topology rather than the molecular orientation seems to play a dominant role in developing anisotropic wetting behavior. The equilibrium contact angles for smooth surfaces have been calculated using the experimentally obtained roughness and anisotropic contact angle data from the rough surface. These values are in reasonable agreement with the measured contact angles for smooth surfaces, suggesting that the observed contact angle anisotropy can be attributed entirely to the roughness anisotropy rather than to the molecular orientation.

Notizen: The use of symmetry coordinates (SC) in geometry optimization is discussed. A computer program incorporating the use of sc, together with analytical calculation of the gradient and quadratic acceleration, is described. Also reported are careful test results on a series of small molecules and typical results with a long series of molecules up to quite large size (40-60 atoms).

Notizen: The free radical copolymerization of a vinyl-terminated hydrocarbon macromonomer, namely poly-l-butene with molecular weight 1,000, with methyl acrylate (MA) led to copolymers with broad molecular weight distributions, and even bimodal character. In the presence of alkylaluminum chloride Lewis acids, higher incorporation of MA was obtained. The polymer MW and mole% MA in the copolymer increase with their decreasing Lewis acid strength. The best result was obtained in the presence of 25 mole% Et2AlCl versus MA at 60°C which led to 82% of the polyhydrocarbon chains being derivatized and unimodal MW distribution. For the copolymerization of the polyhydrocarbon macromonomer and AN, the best results were obtained without Lewis acid in toluene using a free radical initiator at 125°C. The model compound 2,2,4-trimethyl-1-pentene copolymerizes with both MA and AN in standard free radical conditions and the copolymerization parameters were determined.
