Notes: In a previous publication it has been shown that for the case of liquid droplets moving through a second quiescent liquid the holdup vs. slip-velocity ratio could be predicted on the basis of analogous rigid sphere fluidization data. The present paper extends these results to cover the countercurrent flow of both liquid phases. As long as the system is operated below the flooding point, the behavior of the spray column can be predicted from the corresponding solids fluidized data.

Notes: Five different variations on the basic quasilinearization algorithm for optional control are applied to a six-variable nonlinear gas absorber system. Convergence of the algorithms to the optimal trajectory with better than 1% accuracy is achieved in less than ten iterations. The region of initial starting points which yield convergence is quite large. The main difficulty encountered is due to instabilities of the maximum principle equations. This limitation is, however, not severe and it is possible to predict a priori when the difficulty will occur. It is concluded that quasilinearization is a feasible algorithm for the optimization of nonlinear unconstrained systems.

Notes: The discrete-time, time-optimal control of high-order, linear systems with bounded controls is formulated as a problem in linear programming. The solution obtained requires a certain minimum number of controls to be on their bounds. Numerical results are obtained for a system with controls bounded on one and both sides and extensions indicated for state variable constraints. The method proves to be extremely fast and simple to solve on a high-speed digital computer.

Notes: It is shown that the first variation method can be used to provide an excellent starting condition for the second variation control of nonlinear systems. Numerical examples illustrate the basic features of the methods.

Notes: The sensitivity of optimally controlled systems to parameter variations is examined in this paper. Two general approaches toward compensating for these variations are employed. The first, for open-loop systems, involves augmenting the performance index with sensitivity terms and minimizing this combined index. The second approach, an adaptive-type controller, involves estimating those parameter variations that have caused an observed state deviation, and adjusting the control policy in response to this measurement. Numerical examples applied to continuous, discrete-time, and discrete-staged systems demonstrate the effectiveness of these approaches in adapting the control policy to parameter variations.

Notes: Previous publications have shown that for solid spheres fluidized in water a unique relationship exists between the slip velocity and the system holdup. With this work as a model a method is now presented for estimating the behavior of the liquid-in-liquid spray column in which droplets of one phase move through a second quiescent phase.Combining the solids fluidization results with information on the single droplet terminal velocity one can obtain a design estimate of the holdup or interphase contact area for the liquid-liquid spray column. This design estimate includes the particular nature of the liquid droplet of being susceptible to internal circulation, oscillation, and distortion.

Notes: The growing availability of fast, large memory digital computers has made it practical to consider the physical implementation of control system designs incorporating appropriate strategies for automatic process optimization. The control system is taken to consist of the process to be optimized together with the interconnected digital computer. The control strategy is realized in the program of the digital computer. In the present paper a number of such programs or algorithms are discussed for carrying out a search of the possible settings of the process input (independent) variables in such a way as to locate an extremal of the possible values of a chosen objective function. The magnitude of these variables is determined from measurements taken of the dependent variables in the process. It is shown that for the particular process used as an example it is desirable to alter the search strategy as the optimization proceeds in order to locate the extremal in a minimum amount of time. The emphasis at the beginning of the search is on speed in moving towards the optimum and at the end on accuracy.Further, a computational technique is described whereby the dynamic response of the process to the various search steps (or settings) is under time-optimal control. This procedure is important for the fast execution of the search programs and consequent rapid location of the extremal of the chosen objective function.
