    Notes: Basal bodies from laying quail oviduct were semipurified and used as immunogen to produce monoclonal antibodies. On 38 clones obtained and among those staining the apical pole of the ciliated cell, CC-310 was chosen because it labeled the apical region with a punctated aspect, suggesting a staining of basal bodies or of basal body-associated structures; the basal pole was also labeled.The ultrastructural localization performed by the immunogold technique showed that the labeling was mainly associated with the striated rootlets. The basal feet, the side of the basal bodies, and the basal poles of the demembranated cells were also decorated. The identification of the antigen performed by immunoblots of deciliated cortices revealed two proteins of 175,000 and 40,000, whereas immunoblots of basal bodies showed only the 175,000-mw protein. The possibility of these two proteins sharing the same epitope, located at both poles of the cell, is discussed.Immunofluorescence ascertained that CC-310 decorated the striated rootlets in ciliated epithelia from other species: mussel, frog, and human tissue. Finally, when tested on cultured cell lines, CC-310 labeled the centrosome and its associated rootlets on PtK2 during interphase. During mitosis the poles of the mitotic spindle were stained without any apparent rootlet-like structure.

    Notes: Immature oviduct implants from quails stimulated by estrogen to induce ciliogenesis were submitted to the in vitro action of benzodiazepines in organotypic culture. Diazepam and medazepam were added to the culture medium for 24 or 48 hours and tissues were examined by transmission and scanning electron microscopy for alterations in ciliary differentiation.Ciliogenesis was inhibited by both diazepam and medazepam, which affected mainly the migration of the basal bodies. Assembly of basal bodies was achieved normally in the cytoplasm, but their separation from generative complexes and migration toward the apical membrane were prevented. They remained in clusters around a deuteosome or eventually anchored to the close lateral plasma membrane.Furthermore, the drugs affected mature beating cilia, which then appeared lying tangentially to the cell surface. Relation between basal bodies and cortical cytoskeleton seemed to be altered by the drugs, which implies that the bearing of cilia and probably the ciliary beating movement were modified. Mocrovillus development was also altered by the action of these drugs.

    Notes: Endotoxins from gram-negative bacteria are believed to be causative agents of byssinosis, an occupational pulmonary disease associated with exposure to cotton dust in textile mills. Lipid A preparations from Enerobacter agglomerans, a gram-negative bacterium commonly found in cotton and cotton dust, have been analyzed using plasma-desorption mass spectrometry. Results indicate the existence of at least two lipid A types which differ only by the presence of an additional oxygen atom whose position has been localized to the acyloxyacyl ester-linked side-chain of the distal portion of the molecule. The lower molecular weight compound of the two structures has the same molecular weight and presumably the same empirical formula as a well-characterized lipid A from Salmonella minnesota. The mass spectra of lipid A compounds obtained from S. minnesota and E. agglomerans show strong similarities. Palmitoyl, hydroxymyristoyl, myristoyl, and lauroyl side-chains which are known to be prest in the former are inferred from spectral evidence to be present in the latter.

    Notes: Organotin monomers and polymers are becoming of increasing importance. Of especial theoretical and practical interest are polymers of organotin materials. In the present report results are described of studies carried out in the Laboratory of Vinyl Compounds of the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences, USSR and in the Plastics Institute of the State Committee on Chemistry of the Council of Ministers, USSR. The syntheses of a number of organotin polymers are reported, in particular, of the organotin polymethyl methacrylates from trialkyl (or aryl) stannyl methacrylates R3Sn—OCO(CH3)=CH2 and dialkyl (or aryl) stannylene dimethacrylates R2Sn[OCOC(CH3)=CH2]2 and copolymers based on these. The high molecular compounds obtained by polymerization of the organotin esters are a new class of vinyl polymers with the structure: Organotin esters copolymerize with various unsaturated monomers such as methyl methacrylate, styrene, acrylonitrile, cyclopentadiene, etc. The copolymers are mechanically strong, transparent materials. They represent considerable barriers to the passage of x-rays. The organotin esters R3SnOCOC(CH3)=CH2 and R2Sn[OCOC(CH3)=CH2]2 containing the alkyl radicals amyl, hexyl and higher groups polymerize at room temperature in the absence of catalysts to form soft and elastic polymeric materials. In the report a number of properties of another class of organotin polymers, namely, dialkyl (or aryl) stannones (R2SnO)n are discussed. It is suggested that they are high molecular compounds. Their x-ray diagrams and the results of other physicochemical analyses are examined. A study of their Debye x-ray diagrams showed that they have a regularly oriented structure. They are highly reactive and are sources for the preparation of new organotin compounds. Some of their physicochemical properties are described.

    Notes: Plant glycoproteins generally cross-react because of the presence of identical or related complex glycans which are highly immunogenic. The use of mild periodate oxidation of glycans after glycoprotein transfer from sodium dodecyl sulfate-poly-acrylamide gel electrophoresis gels to nitrocellulose membranes prior to immunodetection is a way of identifying the carbohydrate antigenic determinants of a glycoprotein as the basis for antigenic cross-reaction. Periodate oxidation can distinguish between antibodies directed against carbohydrate and against peptide antigenic determinants, the latter being unaffected by oxidation. Immunoblotting performed after periodate treatment allows the detection of common protein epitopes.

    Notes: Precursors to Group II metal aluminates (MAI2O4, M=Mg, Ca, Ba, Sr) are synthesized from inexpensive starting materials including Group II metal oxides/hydroxides, Al(OH)3, triethanolamine (TEA) and ethylene glycol, in a one-pot synthesis process. The precursors are soluble in common organic solvents and can be handled in moist air for a reasonable period of time. On pyrolysis in air to 1200 °C, all three precursors transform to the corresponding Group II metal aluminates. A termetallic double alkoxide, ‘ionomer-like’ structure is proposed, wherein the alkaline-earth metal is encapsulated by a TEA molecule bridging two alumatrane units. The precursors were characterized using TGA, NMR, mass spectroscopy and elemental analyses, and the pyrolysed precursors were briefly characterized using x-ray diffraction analysis. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: Pre-ceramic block or graft copolymers may offer entrée into nanocomposite ceramics provided the two homopolymers are immiscible and one can carefully control the size of the blocks or grafts. We are exploring the possibility of making copolymers from methylsilsesquioxane, —[MeSi(O)1.5]x—, (SiO), a precursor to ‘black glass’ and the polysilazane, —[MeHSiNH]x—, (SiMe), a precursor to silicon carbide nitride. Our initial effors have been directed towards delineating the chemical transformations that SiO, prepared by room-temperature catalytic redistribution of —[MeHSiO]x— using Cp2 TiMe2 as the catalyst (0.1 wt %), undergoes as it is heated to 900 °C in nitrogen. We find that, although Cp2 TiMe2 will not catalyze the redistribution of SiMe at room temperature, in the presence of even small amounts of —[MeHSiO]x— it is an active catalyst precursor and a copolymer can be formed. Spectra and chemical composition studies on the pyrolysis products of the copolymers and SiO are described.

    Notes: Cubic silsesquioxanes, [RSiO1.5]x, potentially offer access to organic/inorganic hybrids wherein the exact shape, size and mechanical properties of the inorganic component are perfectly defined. Furthermore, by tailoring the organic functionality bound to silicon, the inorganic/organic interface can also be perfectly defined. Finally, careful selection of the polymerizable groups in the organic moieties can provide good-to-excellent control of the crosslinked density or degree of polymerization of the resulting hybrid materials. Thus, cubic silsesquioxanes may be exceptional model materials for inorganic/organic hybrids. Methods of synthesizing cubes with liquid-crystalline and/or polymerizable organic moieties are described. Some thermal properties are discussed. The catalytic copolymerization of the octavinyldimethylsiloxy-functionalized cube with the octahydridodimethyl-­siloxy-functionalized cube to produce a material with well-defined microporosity and high surface area is described. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
