Description / Table of Contents: Polyvinylalcohol was oxidized in water solution at 30°C by irradiation with a mercury high pressure lamp and benzophenon-3.3′-disodiumdisulfonate as sensitizer. The reaction products are hydrogen peroxide, acids and carbon dioxide. The macromolecules are degraded statistically. The determination of the viscosity and acid end groups show the formation of one carboxylic group due to one bond scission. A reaction mechanism is discussed.

Notes: Equations were derived by Nusselt for condensation on a vertical bank of horizontal tubes employing several questionable assumptions. His theoretical results indicate that the average condensing coefficient for a tube in an n-tube vertical bank should be n-1/4 times the single-tube coefficient. An empirical modification for turbulence previously suggested by the present author changed the factor to n-1/6. To facilitate further experimental studies and design calculations, precise equations are developed for condensate loading for the different common tube layouts bounded by a circle. These equations use a generalized factor n-1/s where a value of s/4 〉 1.0 becomes an index of turbulence.

Notes: A liquid flowing over a nonwettable surface can form rivulets of various types. The regime of rectilinear rivulet flow plays a key role in that it provides the basis for the study of the other regimes. An analytical solution for the velocity distribution of rectilinear rivulet flow down a vertical plate is derived. A generalized Ritz-Galerkin method is used to obtain a polynomial solution for the case of an inclined plate. These results, unlike those of previous authors, enable one to calculate all the rectilinear flow properties of rivulets over the complete range of practical interest.

Notes: In solidification, one is primarily interested in the movement of the solid-liquid interface and not in the details of the internal temperature distribution. This is parallelled in many other processes of practical interest. Because of the linearity of the governing equation, one may readily obtain an integral relationship between the system variables, as expressed by the moment equations. By further introducing physically reasonable assumptions, one obtains bounding or approximate solutions, some of which are simple but accurate analytic expressions.

Notes: The charge-strain hysteresis curve can be measured by simple apparatus. While fundamental interpretation of the effect may be complex, the use of the curves for practical purposes such as investigation of fatigue, quality control, differentiation between materials or methods of preparation or surface characteristics, is simple. The effect shows indication of being related to the chemical nature of the material, its composition and structure, and particularly the phase or quasi-phase structure. Chargestrain hysteresis curves have been measured. These are quite reproducible if the samples from which specimens are prepared are uniform. The shape of the hysteresis curve is affected by (1) amplitude of strain, (2) rate of straining, including constant strains, (3) the functional dependence of strain upon time, (4) repeated cycling, (5) incorporation of fillers, (6) incorporation of reinforcing fibers, (7) the mechanical properties of the plastic, (8) detailed composition of the polymers, and (9) temperature. Seven general types of hysteresis curve are observed. The general features of the curve, and the hysteresis area are sensitive methods for detecting slight changes for composition. This method of sample differentiation was illustrated with examples showing the magnitude and sensitivity of the effect. When a sample was held at a given strain, the charge decreased; this suggests that both resistivity, and the initial stages of mechanical plastic flow may be observed indirectly through this phenomenon. Continuously repeated cycling shows a change in charging-strain response related apparently to the initial stages of flexural fatigue. A regular decrease of hysteresis area is observed with repeated cycling, with the area decrease depending upon the plastic composition. The rate of decline of the area with repeated cycling is a second method for differentiating between materials, particularly when differences are obscured in other methods of testing.

Notes: Gel chromatography can be considered as a network-limited partition. This leads to the conclusion that it is impossible to find a generalizing relationship between the molecular weight and the elution volume using parameters depending only on the solute. The preparation of gels with different chemical structure is discussed and possible methods for the alteration of pore size are described. Investigations of the influence of the physical and chemical structure on separation and separation efficiency have shown that the elution volume depends to some extent on the chemical nature, but the separation efficiency is mainly a function of the physical structure.

Notes: Water soluble polyamides with iminoethylene and oxyethylene units in the main chain were obtained by condensation polymerization of diethylenetriamine and triethylenetetramine with suitable dimethylesters containing two or three oxyethylene units. The molecular weights were in the range of M̄n = 5000-7000. By potentiometric and conductometric titration only 80-85% of the expected amount of basic groups was found which was probably caused by branching.
