Notes: Infrared absorption by polymeric solids is generally anisotropic due to orientational effects induced by industrial processing and fabrication. The isotropic-equivalent or structure-factor spectrum of a sample can be computed from the absorbances along the three principal axes of the absorption ellipsoid. Experimentally, this is accomplished by a tilting procedure which has been computer interfaced for precise angular control. The technique is applied to poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). The effects of refractive index dispersion, fringe distortion, reflection, and birefringence are evaluated in terms of the thickness direction calculation. Error spectra based on sample symmetry are generated, and the limits of accuracy of the tilting technique are established.

Notes: Trichroic infrared absorption has been measured for oriented phase I poly(vinylidene fluoride). In addition to intensity differences, frequency shifts in the plane transverse to the draw direction are apparent. Shifts up to 10 cm-1 in one-way drawn phase I are found for the CF2 stretching vibration (880 cm-1) between the direction normal to the film surface (thickness direction) and the remaining directions. Annealing the highly oriented films produces no major changes in the unique three-dimensional structure. A model based on crystal defect structures is proposed to explain the unusual frequency shift behavior in the phase I PVDF. Possible conformations and a mechanism of formation of the defects are discussed.

Notes: The techniques of polarized infrared spectroscopy and sample tilting are applied to one-way drawn poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films to calculate the trichroic absorption as a function of frequency. Of specific interest in this study is the distribution of vibrational modes in the plane transverse to the draw direction. The rotational isomeric content of the films is found by the method of least squares and compared with a density-method prediction of crystallinity. A two-phase model to describe PET morphology in the oriented state is examined and found to be inadequate. The segmental orientation as a function of strain is followed with five conformationally sensitive infrared modes. High segmental orientation is found in the trans conformers of both amorphous and crystalline phases. Little net segmental orientation in the gauche conformers of the amorphous phase occurs.

Notes: A design equation is presented for packed-bed reactors containing immobilized enzymes in spherical porous particles with internal diffusion effects and obeying reversible one-intermediate Michaelis-Menten kinetics. The equation is also able to explain irreversible and competitive product inhibition kinetics. It allows the axial substrate profiles to be calculated and the dependence of the effectiveness factor along the reactor length to be continuously evaluated. The design equation was applied to explain the behavior of naringinase immobilized in Glycophase-coated porous glass operating in a packed-bed reactor and hydrolyzing both p-nitrophenyl-α-L-rhamnoside and naringin. The theoretically predicted results were found to fit well with experimentally measured values.

Notes: A new example of the reduction phenomenon often observed in fast-atom bombardment mass spectrometry is described, involving the transformation of an azido group into an amino group. This reaction, noticeable with glycerol as a matrix, does not occur with m-nitrobenzylalcohol.

Notes: A new example of the resuction phenomenon often observed in fast-atom bombardment mass spectrometry is described, involving the substitution of a nitro function by a hydrogen atom. This reaction, clearly visible with glycerol as metrix, takes place to only a very limited extent with m-nitrobenzylalcohol.

Notes: A range of hydroxy-terminated polymyrcenes has been prepared using hydrogen peroxide initiated polymerization of pyroysate grade, β-myrcene in n-butanol solution at 100°C. An oligomeric fraction, containing a large proportion of dimeric material formed via the Diels-Alder reaction, always accompanies the major polymeric fraction. Procedures are described for the removal of this oligomeric material. Polyols so prepared and purified had number average molecular weights (Mn) between 4000 and 2000 g mol-1 at low and high initiator concentrations, respectively, with corresponding number average functionalities (fn) between 1.3 and 2.3 and polydispersities (Mw/Mn) of ∼1.3. The microstructure of the polyols was investigated using NMR spectroscopy from which the main mode of propagation during polymerization of myrcene was deduced to be 1,4 addition across the conjugated double bonds. Glass transition temperatures of the polymyrcenes measured by differential scanning calorimetry were in the range -50-60°C.

Notes: Two hydroxy-functionalized liquid rubbers, one a commercially available polybutadiene (PB) and the other a specially synthesized polymyrcene (PM), have been converted into homopolyurethane elastomers by reaction with 4,&4prime;-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI). Additionally, PB and PM, each in admixture with various amounts of 1,4-butane diol, were reacted with MDI to yield two series of segmented copolyurethanes having different hard-block contents (0-30% w/w). The physical properties of these elastomers have been compared by stress-strain, thermal, and dynamic mechanical analyses, and by swelling experiments. The two series of segmented copolyurethanes have similar morphologies being almost completely phaseseparated and variations in physical properties have been empirically related to hard block contents. The PM-based elastomers exhibited higher Tg values, ultimate elongations, and larger swelling ratios, but were softer and possessed lower tensile strenghts in comparison with elastomers based on PB. These differences have been related to solfraction contents, the nature and distribution of molecular species present in the parent liquid rubbers and hence to polyol functionalities (f̄n). Analysis of the stress-strain data from the homopolyurethanes using the Mooney-Rivlin expression enabled the relationship between f̄n and elastomer structure to be quantified in terms of the molar mass (M̄c) of the polyurethane network chains forming the soft blocks.
