Notes:
The stereoselective polymerization of butadiene to a predominantly cis polymer has been carried out with complex cobaltous halide catalysts, e.g., CoCl2·AlCl3. The unique features of such polymerizations are the homogeneous nature of the catalysis and the activity of such catalysts in the absence of any added reducing agent. The composition and spectroscopy of some of these catalyst solutions have been studied and possible structures proposed. The present status of the work does not permit a conclusive report on the mechanism of this polymerization, but some results of termination with tritiated methanol (CH3OH3) are described. Unfortunately, these experiments do not define the nature of the propagating end of the polymer chain.
