Notes: Polystyrene-supported aluminium silver chloride was prepared as a solid and selective adsorbent for ethylene by refluxing silver chloride, aluminium chloride, and macroreticular-type polystyrene resin in carbon disulfide, followed by removal of the solvent in vacuo. The adsorbent rapidly adsorbed ethylene about equimolar to aluminium silver chloride under 1 atm at 20°C. Almost all the ethylene adsorbed was released by subjecting the adsorbent to a reduced pressure 8 mm Hg at 20°C for 10 min. The adsorbent, however, showed no adsorption of carbon monoxide under 1 atm at 20°C.

Notes: A procedure for enzyme purification by means of line immunoelectrophoresis compatible with subsequent sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the purified enzyme and Coomassie Blue staining is described. Electrophoresis was carried out in an agarose gel backed to GelBond film. The enzyme activity was detected after immunoelectrophoresis on the wet gel and the immunoprecipitate by protein staining on the dried gel. The strip bearing the maximum amount of precipitate was excised and the dried agarose gel scratched off the GelBond support. The dried gel was extracted with the Laemmli sample buffer, heated at 100 °C for 10 min and submitted to sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Proteins were stained with Coomassie Blue. Difficulties due to the presence of the immunoglobulin G subunits were encountered. The validity of the procedure was checked with an α-amylase from barley purified by immunoaffinity chromatography. The procedure was used to compare the molecular weight of α-amylase isozymes identified in barley and in rice seeds. In barley, α-amylase I, the minor enzyme group appearing during germination, had a slightly higher molecular weight than α-amylase II, the main enzyme group. In germinating rice seeds, the minor enzyme group, antigen D, was found to have a molecular weight slightly lower than the one of the other rice α-amylases. A new α-amylase antigen identified in rice as the constituent with the lowest pI was called pre-A. Its molecular weight was found to be the same as the one of the main enzyme group, antigen (A + B).

Notes: A finite element method for the analysis of two-layer density flows is presented in this paper. The standard Galerkin method based on linear interpolation functions is used to yield discrete spatial variables. For numerical integration in time, an explicit two-step selective lumping method is used. Here it is applied to a flow analysis of Ishikari Bay, at the mouth of Ishikari River. This case demonstrates a procedure that yields a numerically stable solution.

Notes: Sodium alkyl ether sulfate (AES), an analog of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was used in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) for the partial decomposition of the photosynthetic reaction center (RC) of Rhodopseudomonas viridis. Unlike SDS, AES did not completely dissociate RC into its subunits but selectively detached H-subunit from RC to give RC(-H) without losing the spectroscopic nature of RC. For the denaturation of RC(-H), AES was found to be as mild as 3-[3-cholamidopropyl dimethylammonio]-1-propanesulfonate (CHAPS).

Notes: The aminolysis of benzoic mesitoic anhydride was studied in a model system to select the reaction site by steric effect and was found to occur exclusively at the carbonyl group of the benzoic acid. Solution polycondensation of new linear bisanhydrides, terephthalic bis(mesitoic anhydride) and adipic bis(mesitoic anhydride), with aromatic diamines in polar aprotic solvents that contained lithium chloride at room temperature, afforded polyamides with high molecular weight. The interfacial polycondensation in a dichloromethane-water system also successfully yielded polyamides from aliphatic diamines.

Notes: Three thiazolium-containing polymers, Th-7, Th-33, and Th-18-Py [where Th-x and Py mean x mol % thiazolium unit and pyridinium unit (54 mol %), respectively], were synthesized from partially p-chloromethylated polystyrene. The catalytic activities of these polymer catalysts in acyloin condensation of aldehydes and decarboxylation of α-keto acids were estimated kinetically by oxidative trapping of the key intermediate by flavin (flavin-trapping technique). In aqueous solution at 30°C, the catalytic activity of Th-18-Py and Th-33 in condensation of p-chlorobenzaldehyde was comparable with that of the cationic-micelle-bound thiazolium ion, whereas Th-7 and a monomeric thiazolium compound (N-benzylthiazolium bromide) scarcely exhibited any catalytic activity. The catalysis of the polymer-bound thiazolium ions was sensitively suppressed by increased ionic strength. These results suggest that the pendent thiazolium ion is activated by the relatively high charge density along the polymer chain: the cationic environment is able to facilitate dissociation of the thiazolium ion to the ylid form and deprotonation of the thiazolium-aldehyde adduct to the key intermediate.

Notes: ---In this paper we propose a new post-column detection method for polyols containing 1,2-diol, 1,3-diol, and saccharides. The polyols are oxidized in a photochemical reactor to yield oxalate with subsequent chemiluminescence detection using [Ru(III)(bpy)3]3+. A mixing solution of eluate and oxidizing reagent is delivered to a reaction coil, which is then irradiated with ultraviolet light to promote the oxidation reaction. The detection limits for 1,2-ethanediol (ethylene glycol) and 1,3-propanediol were 38 pmol and 23 pmol, respectively.
