Notes: A new time-dependent wavepacket approach has been applied to illustrate a rigorous method of calculating the transition function for bound-to-continuum transitions in translational energy spectrometric experiments. The method is numerically exact and fully quantal, and is devoid of any classical or semi-classical approximations. The validity of the hitherto-applied reflection approximation is investigated in a comparative study. The method has been applied to two different translational energy spectrometry experiments: collision-induced dissociation of CO+ and collisional excitation of H2.

Notes: Gas chromatography/isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC/IRMS) coupling was used to evaluate (13C)ethanol incorporation into plasmatic very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) triglycerides of three healthy human volunteers. After the perfusion of 13C-enriched alcohol, VLDL triglyceride fractions were extracted from plasma samples and prepared for the analysis of (13C)fatty acid methyl esters. The GC/IRMS coupling line, the analytical procedure and the data collection are described. The results show that ethanol itself may be used as a substrate for lipogenesis, though to a small extent: less than 10% of VLDL triglycerides may be derived from this metabolic pathway. Ethanol incorporates predominantly into myristic and palmitic acid. The small amount of sample material required for analysis, which minimizes the amount of isotope-labelled substrate required, makes this technique a valuable tool for metabolic investigations in human subjects.

Notes: 3T3 and SV-40 transformed 3T3 mouse fibroblasts were cultured in media with serum and antibiotics plus ammonia (NH3 z NH4+) added as NH4C1. Both cell lines cultured without added ammonia showed normal morphology and multiplication even though ammonia in the medium at the end of the culture period ranged from 35 to 48 μg/ml. Ammonia concentrations being significantly higher in media removed from cells at the end of the culture period than in media incubated identically without cells, verified that cells released substantial quantities of ammonia in addition to components of the medium which underwent spontaneous breakdown. Both cell lines showed changes in morphology and highly significant reductions in cell multiplication which increased progressively as the concentration of added ammonia on the initial day of culture was increased to 35μg/ml. Control 3T3 cultures released significantly greater quantities of ammonia per cell than control cultures of transformed cells but their multiplication was more adversely affected by added ammonia. There were downward shifts in pH of the culturing medium for both cell lines as culture age increased at all concentrations of added ammonia, However, significant reductions in cell multiplication resulted from additions of ammonia that did not produce significant changes in extracellular pH. The data show that studies upon the effects of pH of the medium on cultured cells require control of ammonia concentrations.

Description / Table of Contents: Synthesis and Crystal Structure of Cu2PtIIPt3IVS8(NH4)2PtCl6 and Cu(CH3COO)2 were reacted at 380 K in a constant flow of H2S in the molar ratio of 2:1. Subsequent annealing of the product in sealed quartz glass ampoules in the presence of CuS as a buffer for the sulfur activity (temperature range 770 to 870 K) yields Cu2Pt4S8 as a polycrystalline, greyish black powder. Cu2Pt4S8 crystallizes in the space group P2/n (No. 13) with the cell parameters a = 10.6478(2), b = 6.9350(1), c = 6.7411(1) Å, β = 91.942(1), Z = 2. The structure determination and refinement were performed by the means of x-ray powder diffraction data of this first copperthioplatinate. There are no isotypic compounds known, so far. According to the characteristic coordination of the metals by sulfur, the oxidation states are Cu+I, Pt+II and Pt+IV, the compound may be formulated as Cu2Pt+IIPt3+IVS8. Cu2Pt4S8 exhibits diamagnetic and semiconducting properties.
