Notes: Polyconjugated polymers like poly(acetylene) undergo redox reactions resulting in metal-like conductivity. Due to the complex morphology of the polymer the structure, state of order and the mechanism of carrier generation and transport are not well understood. Two different model systems which are available as well defined single crystals are presented. In polydiacetylene crystals the mobility of charge carriers along isolated and over macroscopic distances defect-free polymer chains can be studied. The radical cation salts of simple arenes serve as models for the structure and charge transfer interactions in the metallic conductive phases of polymers.

Description / Table of Contents: Polyacetylene is important because it can be transferred into metallic conducting phases by treatment with strong oxidizing or reducing agents (“doping”). The influence of the reaction conditions, especially of the polymerization catalyst, are investigated. The polymers obtained under normal conditions are always crosslinked. The morphology is independent of the polymerization method and can be described as an aggregation of lamellar particles with typical dimensions of a few 100 Å. The polymer chains are oriented perpendicular to the surface and chain folding is observed. The crystal structures of cis and trans polyacetylene are given. The consequences of the morphology on the mechanism of doping and charge transport are discussed using general structural principles.

Description / Table of Contents: Die Synthese eines Diels-Alder-Leiterpolymers mit Imino- und Etherbrücken wird beschrieben.
Notes: The synthesis of a Diels-Alder ladder polymer with imino and ether bridges is described. The structure proof is based upon a comparison of its high resolution 13C-NMR spectrum with those of model compounds. The molecular weights can reach values as high as M̄n = 52000 which are the highest ones observed so far for a double stranded polymer. The X-ray structure of model compound 8 is also presented.

Notes: This study is a continuation of previous work done in this laboratory which has demonstrated the possibility of polymerizing built-up monomer multilayers in the solid state. In the present work, the formation, structure, and solid-state polymerization of multilayers of vinyl stearate which can be built up by the method of Langmuir and Blodgett were studied. A new technique to polymerize such films under the water surface was developed. This made possible the formation of poly(vinyl stearate) multilayers with different molecular orientations through bilayer polymerization. The mechanism of deposition and the structure and properties of head-to-tail and head-to-head, tail-to-tail poly(vinyl stearate) multilayers were investigated by using Fourier-Transform infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and electron diffraction.

Notes: Transport properties of asymmetric copolymide membranes made by interfacial polycondensation were studied. The directional flow preference observed in diffusion experiments with ionic permeants can be explained by the swelling behavior of the membrane. As a consequence of the weak acidic and weak basic endgroups, the ion exchange characteristics of the membrane are a function of the pH value in the ambient solution and can be changed from cation to anion exchange properties. Like a bipolar double membrane, it is composed of an cationite and an anionite region. The current-voltage characteristics were found to be asymmetric.

Notes: The topochemical polymerization of the substituted diacetylene, 2,4-hexadiynylene bis(p-toluenesulfonate) (1), has been followed by X-ray crystallography and by determination of the elastic constants of polymerizing crystals. For the first time the crystal structure of a polymerizable diacetylene monomer has been solved and the coordinates of all atoms prior and after the reaction have been determined. The length of the growing polymer chains and their distribution in the monomer matrix can be determined by the evaluation of the Brillouin spectra in terms of a model which considers the polymerizing crystal as a composite material of high-modulus rod-like macromolecules dispersed in the low-modulus matrix of the residual monomer.
