Monohalides of LanthanidesThe preparation, structures, and thermal behaviour of the compounds LaBr, PrBr, GdCl, GdBr, TbCl, TbBr, HoBr, and ErBr are described. They are formed by annealing stoichiometric mixtures of trihalide and metal in sealed tantalum ampoules at temperatures between 870 and 1070 K. The monohalides are isotypic to ZrCl and ZrBr, respectively, The structures contain alternating double layers of metal and non-metal atoms (…XLnLnX…XLnLnX…). The only difference between t-LnX (≙ZrCl) and h-LnX (≙ZrBr) is due to a different stacking of such composite layers. The terminology t-h-LnX has been chosen, as with GdCl and TbCl both forms occur as temperature polymorphs. The single-crystal investigations on t-TbCl and h-TbCl lead to the conclusion that the bonding interactions between the layer packets are different, as it is reflected in changes of the inter-layer Tb—Tb distances. Thus metal-metal bonds can be used as indicators of such weak interactions. The close relationship to other layer structures MX2 (M = Mo, Nb, Ta; X = S, Se, Te) and Ag2F, Hf2S, Ti2O is discussed. The monohalides fit into the concept of „condensed clusters“, like all known halides LnXn (n 〈 2). The highest known degree of condensation in reduced rare earth halides is reached in the monohalides.
Notes:
