    Notes: Practical guidelines are required for the design and operation of complicated catalytic packed-bed reactors. Primary among design considerations is the avoidance of operating regions of high parametric sensitivity, in which small changes in operating conditions can lead to thermal runaway in the reactor. Existing criteria for predicting these regions rely on complex mathematical formulations for differential sensitivity between input and output variables. The present work centers on the development of practical design criteria for avoiding reactor instability and temperature sensitivity in multitubular packed-bed reactors. A set of simple guidelines is proposed for the sizing of reactors and proper selection of operating conditions. The implications of these open-loop sensitivities for a controlled reactor are investigated. It is shown through simulation studies that violation of the proposed criteria leads to control problems and difficulty in operating at the design point.

    Notes: Laboratory and pilot-plant high-speed bead mills of 0.6 and 5 liter capacity and consisting of four and five impellers in series, respectively, were used to follow the batch and continuous disruption of bakers' yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). The mills are not scaled equivalents. Throughputs ranging from 1 × 10-6m3/sec to 12 × 10-6m3/sec for the 0.6 liter mill and from 16 × 10-6m3/sec to 100 × 10-6m3/sec for the 5 liter mill were used for continuous disruption studies. Variables studied included the effect of impeller tip speed, temperature, and packed yeast concentration (ranging from 15 to75% by weight packed yeast). Disruption kinetics, as measured by the release of soluble protein, followed a first-order rate equation, the rate constant being a function of impeller tip speed and yeast concentration. For continuous disruption studies the bead mills behaved as a series of continuous stirred-tank reactors, each impeller forming a reactor. In the smaller mill a considerable degree of backflow between the reactors was evident. For certain mixing conditions the maximum amount of releasable protein was dependent on the impeller geometry, construction material, and also the concentration of packed yeast. The relative power efficiencies of the two mills are discussed along with possible criteria for scaling of bead mills.

    Notes: Thermogravimetric data are generally more extensive than are comparable isothermal aging data, and therefore afford preliminary kinetic information in greater abundance. The kinetic analysis of the thermogram, by use of either its exact equation or a more convenient approximation formula, is straightforward in cases of volatilization via simple kinetics. Application of the analytical procedure to the thermogram for the zero-order volatilization of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane yielded an estimate of 11.65 kcal./mole as the average heat of vaporization in the temperature range of 80 to 145°C. The apparent activation energy for the first-order pyrolytic volatilization of 200-mg. samples of pulverized polytetrafluoroethylene was estimated to be 66 to 68 kcal./mole in the temperature range of 520 to 610°C.

    Notes: A biotechnological process for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solution utilizes enzymatically liberated phosphate ligand which precipitates with heavy metals (M) as cell-bound MHPO4. The enzyme, a phosphatase, obeys Michaelis-Menten kinetics in resting and immobilized cells; an integrated form of the Michaelis-Menten equation was used to calculate the apparent Km (Km app.) as operating in immobilized cells in flow-through columns by a ratio method based on the use of two enzyme loadings (Eo1, Eo2) or two input substrate concentrations (So1, So2). The calculated Km app. (4.08 mM) was substituted into an equation to describe the removal of metals by immobilized cells. In operation the activity of the bioreactor was in accordance with that predicted mathematically, within 10%. The initial tests were done at neutral pH, whereas the pH of industrial wastewaters is often low; an increase in the Km app. at low pH was found in previous studies. Immobilized cells were challenged with acidic mine drainage wastewaters, where the limiting factors were chemical and not biochemical. Bioreactors initially lost activity in this water, but recovered to remove uranyl ion with more than 70% efficiency under steady-state conditions in the presence of competing cations and anions. Possible reasons for the bioreactor recovery are chemical crystallization factors. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The optimal control structure has been introduced as a design tool to measure the control-law nonlinearity of a given process design. In this context, control-law nonlinearity is the optimal degree of nonlinear compensation in the controller, a system property distinct from open-loop nonlinearity and determined by a performance objective and the region of operation as well as the nature of the open-loop system. This approach is extended to the analysis of multivariable systems with output feedback through the application of an extended Kalman filter. Coherence estimation is used as a practical method to measure continuous, open-loop multivariable system nonlinearity. The CSTR with van de Vusse kinetics, a system that features output feedback and a controllaw nonlinearity that changes with operating points, is analyzed. The optimal control structure approach with coherence estimation correctly indicates changes in the controllaw linearity between different operating points and changes as the regions of operation change around a particular operating point.

    Notes: The neurotoxicant 2,5-hexanedione (HD) causes the accumulation of neurofilaments in the distal axon and an acceleration of neurofilament transport proximal to the site of their accumulation. It has been proposed that the acceleration of transport is due to the direct reaction of HD with neurofilament proteins and, conversely, that this acceleration is a secondary response of the axon to injury. The objective of this study was to determine whether the response of axons to HD intoxication includes acceleration of neurofilament transport. Pulse labeling was used to analyze neurofilament transport in age-matched rats exposed to HD or PBS. The animals receiving HD were exposed either throughout the period of radiolabel transport, or prior to the pulse labeling of neurofilament proteins. If acceleration of the rate of neurofilament transport was due to the direct reaction of HD with proteins, then neurofilaments synthesized after the exposure period should travel at control rates, since these proteins would not have been exposed to the toxicant. After 28 days of transport, optic nerve proteins were examined using SDS-PAGE, fluorography, and computerized densitometry. In both HD-treated groups, neurofilament transport was accelerated relative to age-matched control animals. In addition, the amount of NFH was decreased relative to other neurofilament subunits. The combination of accelerated transport and a diminished proportion of NFH is similar to the observations of neurofilament axonal transport during growth and development. These observations suggest that this persistent, secondary effect is a reparative response to injury that recapitulates axonal growth and development. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Five- to Seven-membered (2,2′-Bipyridine)nickelacycloalkanes from Methylenecyclopropane and Nickel(0) CompoundsDepending on the reaction conditions (2,2′-bipyridine)(η2-methylenecyclopropane)nickel (4) or the (2,2′-bipyridine)nickelacycloalkanes 5-8 were obtained from methylenecyclopropane (1) and (2,2′-bipyridine)(1,5-cyclooctadiene)nickel. The complexes were characterized spectroscopically and by decomposition reactions. 5-8 react with methyl acrylate under reductive elimination to give the cycloalkanes 2 (from 5), 3 (from 6a, b), or 9 (from 7). With CO 5 reacts additionally through an insertion to yield the cyclopentanone derivative 10. Alcoholysis of 5 with ethanol affords 2-cyclopropylmethyl-1-butene (11), whereas with phenol the new (2,2′-bipyridine)nickel complex 12 was formed.

Aus 5 entsteht durch Alkoholyse mit Ethanol direkt 2-Cyclopropylmethyl-1-buten (11), während sich mit Phenol der neue (2,2′-Bipyridin)-nickelkomplex 12 bildet.
