Description / Table of Contents: Diazadiene als Steuerliganden in der Katalyse, 51).
Notes: The condensation of glyoxal (as hydrate) or 2,3-butanedione with primary amines is, in principle, a simple reaction. Unfortunately, aliphatic amines with secondary or tertiary α-carbons often give unwanted addition products. Under special reaction conditions the desired diimines (diazadienes (dad): R* - N = CR' - CR' = N - R*, R' = H, CH3) 4, and 6 - 8 are obtained from (R-1-phenyl-ethylamine (1) and (1S,2S,3S,5R)-3-(aminomethyl)pinane (2). Depending on the dione, a morpholinomorpholine 9 and a bioxazolidine 10 are formed from (S)-2-amino-1-butanol (3), which are bound by electron-rich metals in their isomeric dad form ((dad)Mo(CO)4 11 and 12). The acyclic dad structure is stabilized by O-silylation (14, 15). The (dad)iron(0) catalyzed dimerization of butadiene with these controlling ligands to 4-vinyl-1-cyclohexene occurs with an enantiomeric excess up to 16%.

Description / Table of Contents: Diazadienes as Controlling Ligands in Homogeneous Catalysis, VII1). Catalytic Synthesis and Structure of a Cyclooctatetraene with Twofold Vicinal Substitution - 1,4,5,8-Tetrakis[(p-tolyloxy)methyl]-1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraeneThe catalytic reaction of 2-propynyl p-tolyl ether (propargyl p-tolyl either) with the diazadiene nickel complex 4 gives a highly symmetrical cycloocatetraene derivative 2. 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra do not allow to distinguish between three possible substitution patterns (1,3,5,7; 1,4,5,8; 1,2,5,6). Double bond and substituent positions were determined by an X-ray structural analysis. The encountered pattern with a twofold vicinal substitution (1,4,5,8) was hitherto unknown for catalytically prepared cycloocatatetraenes. At the same time, 2 is the first cyclotetramer of a propargylic ether.

Description / Table of Contents: Complex Chemistry of Four-Centre π-Systems, VI. The „π-Back Bonding“: Reduction Potentials of (1.4-Diheterobutadiene)molybdenum Tri- and DicarbonylsTo describe the metal-ligand π-bonding situation in a simple two-function model the polarographic reduction potentials of (diheterobutadiene)(DHB)phosphinemolybdenum tricarbonyls B and corresponding DHB-bis(phosphine)molybdenum dicarbonyls C are given and compared with the results for free DHB ligands and their tetracarbonyl complexes A. Moreover substituent effects are discussed and the strong influence of lone-pair s̰-coordination on the orthogonal π-system is demonstrated.

Description / Table of Contents: The Complex Chemistry of Four Center π Systems, IX. 2,2′Bipyridyl- a „Bad Ligand“ for Metals in Low Oxidation StatesThe comparison of the complex series LMo(CO)4, LMo(CO)3PBu3, and LMo(CO)2(PBu3)2 [L = t-C4H9—N=CH—CH=N—t-C4H9 (DAB), 2,2′-bipyridyl (bpy)] and their paramagnetic monoanions reveals that the π-acceptor quality of bpy is only about one half of that of DAB. This follows from EPR spin densities at the coordination sites and 31P coupling constants as well as from the solvatochromism of the absorption in the electronic spectra. π-Interaction (β) is for bpy approximately 0.6 eV, while it reaches 1 eV for DAB.

Description / Table of Contents: Intramolecular cis-trans Exchange of Carbonyl Ligands in (L—L)M(CO)4 ComplexesTetracarbonyl complexes of VIb-metals with glyoxal bis(arylimines) as bidentate ligands show cis/trans exchange of the carbonyl ligands as found by means of the 13C n.m.r. spectrum. The i.r. data indicate a distorded octahedron in the ground state and the 13C n.m.r. spectrum a trigonalprismatic transition state. The activation barrier has been determined in 13CO-enriched compounds.

Description / Table of Contents: Metalation of a Non-activated Alkyl Group in Nickel ComplexesThe diazadiene (DAD)glyoxalbis(diisopropylmethylimine) (1) reacts with anhydrous nickel bromide to yield (DAD)NiBr2 (2). Its reactions with main group metal alkyls lead to rather unstable intermediates. With the bulky O-tolylmagnesium bromide -under formal HBr abstraction- metalation of the diisopropylmethyl substituent occurs in γ-position to the next activating center (N) with formation of an N—C chelate. Properties and structure of this product 3 from this novel alkane activation reaction are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Complex Chemistry of Four-Centre π-Systems, V. The „π-Back Bonding“: Solvatochromie of (1.4-Diheterobutadiene)molybdenum Tri- and Dicarbonyls1.4-Diheterobutadienes (DHB) such as glyoxal or biacetyl diimines and camphorquinone monoimines form series of stable „molybdenum(0)“ complexes: DHB-molybdenum tetracarbonyls A, DHB-phosphinemolybdenum tricarbonyls B, and DHB-bis(phosphine)molybdenum dicarbonyls C. Comparison of the solvatochromism of more than 60 compounds of series B und C with that of complexes A gives precise information about the oxidation state of metal and ligand, the direction of the low energy electronic transition and the importance of π-back bonding or the magnitude of π-resonance integrals. The minimum transition energies in the solvatochromism diagrams and thus the resonance integrals depend on steric factors. Irregularities with camphorquinone derivatives can be understood as changes in coordination geometry. Half widths δn̈1/2 and their solvent dependance minimize along with transition energies.

Description / Table of Contents: Photoelectron Spectra of Phenylethynes, I. - Phenylethyne - Model Probe for Substituent EffectsThe four low energy π-orbitals of ethynylbenzene (1) respond differently to substitution at the alkyne site due to their respective symmetry properties. The gas phase He(I) PE spectra of the series 1 - 13 (C6H5 - C ≡ C — R) are presented and the energetic trend of the π- bands in relation to R is investigated. Relative inductive substituent effects for R - including R = H - are gained via [C6H5 —C≡C—]213 from a composite molecule MO model; they correspond with known substituent constants. The PE spectra of tolane (12) and of 13 suggest conformeric mixtures to be present; their composition is discussed on the basis of the PE data and of semiempirical MO calculations.
