Notes: This article discusses optimum conditions for polycondensation of multifunctional monomers. Reaction variables such as monomer concentration, temperature, and time were studied to optimize reaction conditions. The influence of the nature and concentration of catalysts was also investigated. The optimum reaction conditions consisted of polymerization in an 82% w/w m-cresol solution at 160°C for 2 h, continuous reaction at 200°C for 1.5 h at 230°C for 3.5 h, followed by 40 min under reduced pressure and at 200°C. The catalyst was 1.4 × 10-3 mol % Zn(OAc)2 · 2H2O in dimethyl terephthalate. Polycondensation of ethylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol, pentaerythritol, and trifunctional monomers (glycerin or trimethanolpropane) with dimethyl terephthalate was carried out in m-cresol to produce polyester prepolymers. The synthesized prepolymers were mixed with commercial Desmodur CT-stable (a phenol-blocked polyisocyanate) to form one-component varnishes which were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis. Polyester modified with trimethanolpropane has higher thermal stability than the one modified with glycerin. After being coated onto treated copper wires, the magnetic wires were characterized according to the specification of Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS-C-2358) and were found to be acceptable.

Notes: Nickel-coated carbon fibers (NCF) treated with a coupling agent (CA) have been used for preparing composites of polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile - butadiene - styrene (ABS) (90/10%) by melt blending. These composites have been evaluated for electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE), mechanical properties, dispersion, and adhesion of the polymer to a filler using the scanning electron microscope (SEM). There is an improvement in the EMI SE, tensile strength, and impact strength of the composite when the carbon fiber is coupled with titanate CA. In loading NCF in composite, the optimum concentration of the CA Lica 38 used is about 2.0 phf combined with 1.5 phf calcium stearate (Ca.st.) (on the weight percentage of fillers); the composite can reach an SE of 50 dB by the coaxial transmission line test method.

Notes: Polyester - imide prepolymers containing synthesized N,N′-bis(hydroxyethyl)pyromellitic diimide (PMDI) or N,N′-bis(hydroxyethyl)-3,3′-4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic diimide (BTDI) were synthesized under conditions previously reported. One-component varnishes were obtained by mixing the synthesized prepolymers with commercial Desmodur CT-stable. Thermal behavior of these varnishes was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis. Activation energy of cured film, which was a polyester - imide varnish, was determined by using a multiple heating rate method. Polyester - imides coated copper wires were characterized, and were found to be acceptable, according to the specification of Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS-C-3214).

Notes: The dorsal vessel (DV) in the abdomen of the blood-feeding insect Rhodnius prolixus was divided functionally into two regions, the heart, into which haemolymph entered the DV through four pairs of ostia located in abdominal segment VII, and the aorta, along which the haemolymph was propelled from abdominal segment VI to the thorax. Osmium-fixed whole mounts revealed the DV to consist of spirally arranged striated muscle fibers and to possess two rows of ventrally attached longitudinal fibers extending the length of the abdomen. Seven pairs of alary muscles were found attached to the DV in the posterior abdominal segments. Contractions of the alary muscles attached to the ventral surface of abdominal segments VII and VIII served to expand the heart. Electron microscopy revealed the DV to consist of a thin layer of contractile elements surrounded by an inner (intima) and outer (adventitia) connective tissue layer. Embedded in the intima along each lateral side of the DV were two large groups of endocardial cells extending the length of the DV. A small group of pericardial cells was embedded in the adventitia along the mid-ventral side of the DV, and clusters of pericardial cells were found attached to the alary muscles. Nerve terminals were found only on the heart: they contained agranular synaptic vesicles approximately 30 nm in diameter and densely stained granules approximately 100-120 nm in diameter. These structural components are discussed in relation to the role of the DV in circulation.

Notes: Taxol, a microtubule stabilizing agent, has been extensively investigated for its antitumor activity. The cytotoxic effect of taxol is generally attributed to its antimicrotubule activity and is believed to be cell cycle dependent. Herein, we report that taxol induces hyperphosphorylation and reorganization of the vimentin intermediate filament in 9L rat brain tumor cells, in concentration- and time-dependent manner. Phosphorylation of vimentin was maximum at 10-6 M of taxol treatment for 8 h and diminished at higher (10-5 M) concentration. Enhanced phosphorylation of vimentin was detectable at 2 h treatment with 10-6 M taxol and was maximum after 12 h of treatment. Taxol-induced phosphorylation of vimentin was largely abolished in cells pretreated with staurosporine and bisindolymaleimide but was unaffected by H-89, KT-5926, SB203580, genistein, and olomoucine. Thus, protein kinase C may be involved in this process. Hyperphosphorylation of vimentin was accompanied by rounding up of cells as revealed by scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, there was a concomitant reorganization of the vimentin intermediate filament in the taxol-treated cells, whereas the microtubules and the actin microfilaments were less affected. Taken together, our data demonstrate that taxol induces hyperphosphorylation of vimentin with concomitant reorganization of the vimentin intermediate filament and that this process may be mediated via a protein kinase C signaling pathway. Notes: This paper deals with compressible fluid flow accompanied by solid deposition in a porous reservoir. The isothermal fluid flow is considered to be radial and follows Darcy's law. The initially dissolved substances precipitate from the solution as a result of solubility reduction as the pressure declines. These deposits accumulate in the void spaces and hence inhibit the flow. An idealized model describing this transport mechanism has been proposed. On the basis of this model, a numerical technique has been developed to predict the amount of solid precipitation and the pressure distribution as functions of time and radial distance. The method is applied to the production performance of a reservoir containing mainly hydrogen sulfide saturated with elemental sulfur. The solid sulfur builds up rapidly in the vicinity of the production well. A very negligible amount is formed close to the impermeable outer boundary. It is shown that plugging by solid sulfur in the porous medium can be reduced either by reducing the production rate or by choosing closer well spacing.

Notes: The dynamic behavior of deep-bed filtration was studied by considering two limiting situations. In the first case it was assumed that deposition leads to the presence of a reasonably smooth deposite layer over filter grains. In the second case particle aggregates, once formed, were assumed to remain rigid and the deposited particles to act as additional collectors. The effect on filter performance of the media change resulting from the presence of these two types of deposits was examined quantiatively.
