Notes: The uncatalyzed esterification of acetic acid is described in the literature as a typical example of reactive distillation. Many rigorous models were validated using this esterification as an example. Process proposals for the production of pure ethyl acetate from ethanol and acetic acid have been determined using short-cut methods with the assumption of chemical equilibrium only. In this publication, the limitations of this esterification are clarified, using a rigorous model that was developed. The reasons why reactive distillation appears to be unfavorable for this esterification are explained. It is, however, theoretically possible to obtain ethyl acetate in high purity with different variants of the process. Different process variants are examined in this work. Construction variables that are important for the design of reactive columns, such as the number of reactive separation stages and the holdup in the column, are analyzed. Furthermore, the influence of variables dependent on the component system, such as the phase equilibrium of the reactive system and the reaction kinetics on the conversion in the column, are described. It can be shown that the short-cut methods published so far for reactive distillation, which assume chemical equilibrium, are inadequate.

Description / Table of Contents: Stress anisotropy and structure of TiN thin filmsIn many sputtering processes the substrate is rotated or periodically moved with respect to the target in order to obtain a homogeneous film deposition. In that case anisotropic conditions of film growth exist which lead to anisotropic mechanical stresses. The stress anisotropy depends on the carrier velocity and can be attributed to the film structure. The stress measurements, therefore, will be related to measurements of composition by SNMS, to determination of stoichiometry by ellipsometry and to investigations of structure by X-ray diffraction.

Notes: The cell cycle dependency of foreign gene expression in recombinant mouse L cells was investigated. Two different recombinant mouse L cell lines having the glucocorticoid receptor-encoding gene and the lacZ reporter gene were used in this study. The lacZ gene expression was controlled by the glucocorticoid-inducible mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV) promoter in both cell lines. In “M4” cells the gr gene was under the control of another MMTV promoter, but in “R2” cells it was under the control of the constitutive Rous sarcoma virus promoter. These normally attachment-grown cells were adapted to suspension culture, and a dual-laser flow cytometer was used to simultaneously determine the DNA and foreign protein (β-galactosidase) content of single living cells. Expression of β-galactosidase as a function of cell cycle phase was evaluated for cells in exponential growth without any addition of the glucocorticoid inducer, dexamethasone. Cell cycle positions in the S phase were estimated on the basis of DNA content per cell, and position in the G1 phase was estimated on the basis of cell size as measured by pulse-width time of flight. The results showed that β-galactosidase synthesis occurred through all cell cycle phases, but the expression rate in the G1 phase was much lower than that in the S and G2/M phases in both cell lines. On the basis of cell size analysis, β-galactosidase expression in M4 cells (with autoinducible promoter) was found to be higher than that in R2 cells (with inducible promoter) during the G1 phase. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A skeletal neomorph - the preglossale - is described from the tip of the tongue in Passer. This medial unpaired skeletal element is a dorsally open trough articulating with the anterior tips of the paraglossalia and supporting the heavy epidermal pad of the seed-cup. The large paired Mm. hypoglossus anterior originate from the posterior half of the preglossale and insert onto the anterior bodies of the paired paraglossalia; they serve to depress the anterior portion of the preglossale. A regular pattern of dermal papillae is present in the seed-cup; these are arranged in about 20 rows of six to 8 papillae per row. Each papilla contains a series of Merkel cells and associated nerve endings (touch receptors). The seed-cup serves to orient and hold the seed in place while it is being husked; the battery of tactile receptors provides information on the position of the seed on the tongue. The preglossale serves to support the seed-cup and to change its shape - the curvature of the dorsal surface - as it is depressed relative to the paraglossalia. The paraglossale and associated features of the seed-cup in Passer would provide a valuable preparation to study a diversity of problems such as developmental interactions between endomesodermal and ecto-mesenchymal skeletal features, the ontogenetical development of Merkel cells, and the sensory physiology of Merkel cells and their associated nerve endings as tactile corpuscles.

Notes: In space-based robotics, one of the most important problems is the disturbance to the satellite attitude and to the satellite microgravity environment caused by satellite mounted robot operation. This paper reports on computer-aided motion planning strategies to overcome this problem. Point-to-point motion designs are generated which not only connect prescribed start and end points of the robot motion, but also simultaneously return the satellite to its original attitude. Theoretical characterizations of some of those motion designs are presented, as well as numerical results. The computation time required to produce such motion designs is 1 or 2 min on a workstation. Thus, it can be practical to use these motion plans in space. © 1998 B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
