Description / Table of Contents: Contributions to the Chemistry of Phosphorus. 200. Tetraisopropyl-tetradecaphosphane(4), P14(i-Pr)4 - Preparation and Structural CharacterizationTetraisopropyl-tetradecaphosphane(4) (1) has been obtained by reacting i-PrPCl2, P4, and magnesium and subsequently thermolysing the crude reaction product, and has been isolated in pure form. Whereas the 31P{1H}-NMR spectrum provides only limited structural information, the 13C{1H, 31P}-DEPT-NMR and the 1H{31P}-NMR spectrum of 1 reveals the presence of two symmetrical configurational isomers 1a and 1c and one asymmetrical diastereomer 1b. This would only be possible, if 1 is 3,4,10,11-tetraisopropyl-hexacyclo[6.6.0.02,6.05,14.07,12.09,13]tetradecaphosphane. When crystallizing 1 pure 1a precipitates, which at +10°C in solution is retransformed into the isomeric mixture 1a, 1b, 1c by inversion of the configuration.

Description / Table of Contents: Contributions to the Chemistry of Phosphorus. 195. Pentaalkylcyclopentaphosphane Monoxides, (PR)5O (R = Me, Et) - Preparation and Structure Determination by 31P-NMR SpectroscopyThe cyclopentaphosphane monoxides (PMe)5O (1) and (PEt)5O (2) are formed by reacting the pentaalkylcyclopentaphosphanes (PR)5 (R = Me, Et) with dry atmospheric oxygen under proper conditions. Whereas 1 is rather decomposable and therefore cannot be obtained in pure form, the more stable compound 2 could be isolated by high pressure liquid chromatography. According to the IR spectrum and the complete analysis of the 31P{1H}-NMR spectrum oxygen is bound exocyclically to the five-membered phosphorus ring. 2 exists as a mixture of two configurational isomers 2a and 2b, which differ in their relative arrangements of the ethyl substituents.

Description / Table of Contents: Contributions to the Chemistry of Phosphorus. 53. 1,2,3,4-Tetraphenylcyclo-5-thia-1,2,3,4-tetraphosphane1,2,3,4-Tetraphenyl-cyclo-5-thia-1,2,3,4-tetraphosphane (“tetraphenylcyclotetraphosphine-monosulphide„) 1 is obtained in very good yield and purity by the reaction of pentaphenyl-cyclopentaphosphane (2) with sulphur (4 C6H5P: 1 S). Further new methods of preparation are the comproportionation of 2 with (C6H5PS)3, and the reaction of dipotassium-triphenyl-cyclotriphosphide (4) with sulphur dichloride. The IR and 31P-NMR spectra of the title compound indicate unambiguously the heterocyclophosphane structure 1 with a five-membered P4S ring. The elevated stability of this ring system is evident from numerous other formation reactions, which are reported in addition.

Description / Table of Contents: Contributions to the Chemistry of Phosphorus. 59. Synthesis and Structure of (C6H5PS)31,2,4-Triphenyl-1-thio-cyclo-3,5-dithia-1,2,4-triphosphane (C6H5PS)3 (1) is obtained in very good yield by the reaction of dipotassium triphenyltriphosphide (4) with dichloro trisulfane, as well as by the reaction of phenylphosphine with sulphur dichloride. Besides, 1 is formed, together with the cyclothiaphosphane (C6H5P)4 (3), by the reaction of a 1,2-diphenyl-1,2-dihalogen-diphosphane with hydrogen sulphide or disulfane and by the reaction of 4 and disulphur dichloride. - All of the spectroscopic data, especially the 31P nmr spectra, indicate unambiguously the heterocyclophosphane structure V with a five-membered P3S2-ring with isolated sulphur atoms, and with one of the directly connected phosphorus atoms bearing another sulphur atom in exo-position, in addition to the phenyl group.

Description / Table of Contents: Contributions to the Chemistry of Phosphorus. 64. About the Quasicyclic Conformation of the Organylphosphides M2(PR)n′[M = K, Na]The organyl tetraphosphides M2(PR)4 (M = K, Na) and - as can be assumed with a high probability - the corresponding triphosphides M2(PR)3 exhibit a quasicyclic conformation with a twofold intramolecular metal bridge between the terminal P atoms. This structure becomes evident from the following 31P n.m.r. spectroscopic observations for the tetraphosphides: For the salts M2(PR)4 (M = K, Na) only a single configuration isomer is observed indicating that a configuration selecting “cyclization reaction” takes place. Beyond it, the 2JPP coupling constants have the same range of magnitude as in five-membered heterocyclophosphanes. Moreover, the 3JPP couplings between the “terminal” P atoms possess unusual high values. The alternative monocyclic structure with a single metal bridge is not compatible with a configuration rule for five-membered phosphanes which describes the relation of magnitudes of cis- and trans-2JPP couplings.

Description / Table of Contents: Contributions to the Chemistry of Phosphorus. 65. About the Cyclocarbaphosphanes (PC6H5)4CH2, (PC6H5)4CH2S, and (PC6H5)4CH2S2The reaction of 1,2,3,4-Tetraphenyl-cyclo-5-carba-1,2,3,4-tetraphosphane (PC6H5)4CH2 1 with sulfur in the ratio 4 C6H5P:1 S and 2 C6H5P:1 S respectively yields the Thiocyclo-carba-phosphanes (PC6H5)4CH2S 2 and (PC6H5)4CH2S2 3. The sulfur atoms in 2 and 3 are bonded in exo position to the phosphorus atoms neighbouring the CH2-group, thus indicating the stability of the P4C-ring. 1, 2, and 3 possess an “all-trans” configuration of the phenyl substituents. The 31P and 1H n.m.r. parameters of 1 and 3 are reported and discussed.
Notes: Bei der Reaktion von 1,2,3,4-Tetraphenyl-cyclo-5-carba-1,2,3,4-tetraphosphan (PC6H5)4CH2 1 mit Schwefel im Verhältnis 4 C6H5P:1 S bzw. 2 C6H5P:1 S entstehen die Thio-cyclo-carba-phosphane (PC6H5)4CH2S 2 bzw. (PC6H5)4CH2S2 3.

Description / Table of Contents: Contributions to the Chemistry of Phosphorus. 72. About the Alkyl Cyclomonocarba Phosphanes (PR)4CH2, R = CH3, C2H5, t-C4H9The alkyl-substituted cyclomonocarbaphosphanes (PR)4CH2 (R = CH3 1, C2H5 2, t-C4H9 3) are obtained in very good yield by the reaction of the corresponding dipotassium alkylphosphides K2(PR)n (n = 2, 3, 4) with methylene chloride. Besides, small amounts of the homocyclic rings characteristic for the given substituent and of the five-membered cyclodicarbaphosphanes (PR)3(CH2)2 with isolated CH2 groups are formed. For the alkylcyclomonocarbaphosphanes 1 and 2, configuration isomers could be identified for the first time. The “all-trans” forms are always predominant; the relative amounts of the other isomers decrease strongly with increasing number of cis relationships between the substituents at adjacent phosphorus atoms. The 31P n.m.r. parameters for three of the all together six isomers of 1 distinguishable by n.m.r. spectrometry and for the “all-trans” isomers of 2 and 3 are reported and discussed. A definite separation is possible between substituent and configuration influence on the chemical shifts as well as on the coupling constants.
