Notes: The anomalous behavior of refractive index and density in the glassy ternary B2O3-BaTiO3-Na2O materials is presented and discussed in terms of Raman spectroscopy results. The slope change in the optical properties as a function of composition takes place within the same range of composition in which the Raman spectra suggest a transition from a bridging type of attack on the glassy matrix by the oxygen present in the basic oxide, to a nonbridging type. The structural modifications of the materials at different compositions are inferred from a detailed analysis of the Raman spectra.

Notes: A reinvestigation of the two known methods of preparation of the title compound 1 revealed that one of these leads to a mixture of 1 and 4-[2-(acetoxy)ethyl]-1,2-benzenediol (5). The other method yields only 2-methoxy-4-(2-phenylethyl)phenol (6). An unambiguous straightforward preparation of 1 by LiAlH4 reduction of 3,4-dihydroxy-1-benzeneacetic acid (8) is described.

Notes: Coupling and uncoupling between the equilibrium and mass balance equations in soil consolidation problems in investigated in detail. A procedure for judging the strength of coupling is indicated. In the applications, particular emphasis is given to subsidence problems where the coupled nature of the problem is still sometimes questioned. It is shown that even in the case of a single pumped aquifer most situations are coupled.

Notes: The problems of consolidation often involve unbounded continua. The most common solution is then achieved by limiting the studied area through the introduction, at finite distance, of a boundary on which adequate conditions on the field variables are imposed. In this paper mapped infinite elements are used to model the far-field solution. Spatial discretization is hence performed on the basis of both finite and infinite elements. In two examples, solutions involving finite and infinite elements are compared with known analytical solutions and it is shown that an excellent agreement can be achieved by the use of mapped infinite elements.

Notes: The use of conjugated polyene fatty acids as probes of membrane structure is examined. α- and β-parinaric acid (cis, trans, trans, cis- and all trans-9,11,13,15-octadecatetraenoic acid) and synthetic lecithins containing an α-parinaric acid chai in position 2 have been prepared, and their absorption and fluorescence properties have been determined. Their absorption spectra are at sufficiently long wavelength to be unobscured by cellular chromophores such as nucleotides and aromatic amin acids. Parinaric acid absorption does, however, overlap tryptophan emission which allows fluorescence energy transfer.Potential uses of these fluorescent probes are presented with studies on mode systems with known physical properties. Dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine exhibits a sharp phase transition 1° wide at 42° C, as monitored by the fluorescence intensit, of parinaric acid. The magnitude of the transition is independent of probe concentration, but the width of the transition and hysteresis are dependent upon such factors as the probe concentration and whether or not sonication is used in sample preparation. Using both fluorescence and absorption properties of the probe, we show that the addition of cholesterol to the dispersion broadens and decreases the magnitude of the transition. These results are interpreted in terms of a change in the polarizability of the acyl chains of a lipid bilayer as the bilayer undergoes a thermal transition.Lipid-protein interactions are studied by the binding of α-parinaric acid to bovine serum albumin. Fluorescence enhancement, absorption spectral shifts, and quenching of tryptophan fluorescence are observed when α-parinaric acid binds to bovine serum albumin. Calculations based on these measurements are consistent with two binding sites of KB ∼ 108 (M-1) and three to four binding sites of KB ∼ 106 - 107 (M-1), similar to known values for the binding of other long-chain fatty acids.Biosynthetic incorporation of β-parinaric acid into the E. coli fatty acid auxotroph 30E βox- has been accomplished and phase transitions in cells and isolated phospholipids are shown.

Notes: Disposable soft contact lenses based on HEMA-MAA hydrogels are examined using Raman and ATR/FTIR vibrational spectroscopies and thermal analysis. The main factors dealing with physical, chemical, and biological biocompatibility are evaluated in relation to those of long-wear soft contact lenses with the aim of individuating the most biocompatible lens. The Raman spectra of HEMA-MAA lenses show that some biocompatibility factors are affected by environmental conditions and, in particular, by changes in pH and ionic strength values. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Minisatellite analysis is commonly used in forensic disputes but can also be applied to the investigation of cell contamination. Such a problem arises, for example, when transplantation is performed. The presence of contamination has been investigated by other authors using radioactive methods. In the present study we describe a method that allows the detection of contamination with high sensitivity without using radioactive substances. Our technique is based on the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of minisatellite sequences (VNTR), followed by chemiluminescent detection. In particular, biotin-labelled dCTP is included in the PCR mixture and detection of PCR products is obtained following the CSPD chemiluminescent protocol (Southern-Light Nucleic Acid Detection Systems). We applied this method to artificial mixes of DNA of two individuals with alleles of different sizes. We performed progressive dilutions of an individual DNA into the other's DNA and revealed a contamination of 1 in 2500 cells. We also tested our technique searching for maternal contamination in cord blood samples in 60 cases and revealed a 18.3% contamination. The technique that we set up proves to be a very sensitive one which could be applied not only to the detection of maternal cells in cord blood but also in studying any other kind of contamination. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: Variable alumina quantities were added to two types of calcium phosphate materials-hydroxyapatite ceramics with Ca/P = 1.67 and calcium metaphosphate glass with Ca/P = 1-in order to increase their mechanical properties. Raman spectroscopy shows that alumina interacts with the phosphate group of these materials, while thermomechanical analysis shows that their elastic modulus has a value similar to that of bone. Histological sections demonstrate that the surface in close contact with ceramic materials shows a good integration between bone and biomaterial. All ceramic specimens are penetrated by well-stained, presumably glycoprotein, matrix, that consistently forms a thin network in close contact with the implant. After 6 weeks bone growing on both ceramic and glass shows signs of maturation with a lamellar structure and an apparently normal mineralization. In the case of the glass, inside this newly formed bone, were often observed two layers, the internal one showing a well defined lamellar structure.

Notes: In this paper a mathematical model is presented, based on the application of an averaging technique, in which the equations governing the behaviour of saturated porous media are integrated (averaged) over the smallest dimension of the domain of the problem (thickness). This results in a two dimensional model, in which the three dimensional nature of the problem is accounted for. In fact, the solution is sought in terms of the mean values over the thickness of the field variables and of the transverse displacement components. For the solution of the resulting governing equations a partitioned procedure is employed, which improves the efficiency of the method. The proposed model is very useful in solving problems in which the spatial nature prevents the applications of two dimensional models.Examples are presented, which illustrate the validity of this approach.
