Description / Table of Contents:
A new method for the determination of the content of phenyl and 4-tert.-butylphenyl endgroups in polycarbonates, made by use of chain terminators, is presented. The method is also suitable for analysis of 4-cresyl, 4-isooctylphenyl, 4-cyclohexyl-phenyl as well as benzoyl endgroups. After degradation of the polycarbonate by alkaline total hydrolysis the amounts of phenol, 4-tert.-butylphenol, 4-cresol, 4-isooctylphenol, 4-cyclohexylphenol or benzoic acid are determined in the acidified hydrolysate by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography. Contrary to common analytical procedures in literature for analysis of phenyl and 4-tert.-butylphenyl endgroups, no special pretreatment steps for enrichment or separation are required. The new HPLC method is advantageous because of its easy performance and short times spent on analysis. The results show very good repeartability and accuracy.
Notes:
