Notes: Poly[2,2-bis(4-oxycyclohexyl)propane adipate] was formed by melt polymerizing adipic acid and 2,2-bis(4-hydroxycyclohexyl)propane in the presence of n-butylhydroxyoxostannane. This polyester possessed a melting temperature (Tm) of 200°C and a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 75°C. An excellent notched impact strength of 22 ft. lbs./in. was its best physical property.

Notes: A new type of microelectrode array device has been developed using semiconductor-processing techniques. An array of 15 × 15 square electrodes as small as 1 μm, spaced 100 μm apart, has been fabricated on a silicon chip of dimensions 1.5 × 1.5 mm2. Steady state electrochemistry was performed using these devices in both aqueous and non-aqueous media.

Notes: An ion mobility detector that has been specifically developed for interfacing with capillary gas chromatography is investigated in the negative ion mode. Like the electron capture detector, to which this instrument is closely related, the ion mobility detector shows an enhanced response to low molecular weight halogenated compounds when a small quantity of oxygen is doped into the make-up gas flow. Under O2 doping conditions, the device can operate in a reactant ion monitoring mode responding universally to compounds capable of capturing thermal electrons and in a tunable selective product ion mode providing increased selectivity over that achieved by the ECD. At an oxygen concentration of 0.5%, minimum detectable amounts as low as 600 femtograms have been realized for carbon tetrachloride. Selectivity of chloro- versus bromo- compounds is demonstrated using a mixture of p-dichlorobenzene and p-dibromobenzene.

Notes: This work describes the construction and operation of a flame ionization detector for the selective detection of metal-containing compounds after capillary supercritical fluid chromatography. Using optimal conditions for achieving metal sensitive flame ionization responses which have been established for the detector after capillary gas chromatography, initial evaluation of the detector after SFC proved promising. Like the carbon sensitive FID, it appears that the metal sensitive FID is compatible with SFC when pure carbon dioxide is used as the mobile phase. Response characteristics were found to be similar to those observed when the detector is used in gas chromatography.

Notes: This paper demonstrates a novel operating mode of an ion mobility detector (IMD) for obtaining both qualitative and quantitative data after capillary gas chromatographic separation of 5,5′-disubstituted barbiturates. Using a recently developed time dispersive Fourier transform method for ion mobility spectrometry, complete ion mobility spectra could be obtained for each component in the chromatogram. This type of spectra can be used for providing qualitative information on unknown compounds or for selecting the proper detector conditions needed when operating in the continuous mobility monitoring mode.In this study each of the five barbiturates investigated produced a Fourier transformed ion mobility spectrum containing one major product ion. When drift times corresponding to those of the product ions measured in the FT mode were monitored continuously, selective chromatographic detection of the barbiturates was achieved. In one case even isomers could be differentiated based on mobility characteristics.

Notes: Using a unidirectional flow ion mobility detector, non-selective detection, tunable selective detection, and complete Fourier transformed ion mobility spectra were successfully obtained after supercritical fluid chromatography on compounds with higher molecular weights than have been previously investigated. In the most selective mode, single oligomers from polymeric material could be independently detected. Using the Fourier transform capabilities of this instrument, complete ion mobility spectra for each oligomer could be obtained in a single chromatographic separation. The collection of individual ion mobility spectra of the components of polymeric material has not been possible prior to the technique described in this paper. Only complex ion mobility spectra of polymeric mixtures are available in the literature. The spectra obtained in this study are all simple, uncomplicated spectra consisting of only one or two product ion peaks. Ko values reported in this work range from 0.633 to 1.61, which are some of the lowest values ever reported in ion mobility spectrometry. With the unidirectional flow design of the detector, the supercritical fluid mobile phase, carbon dioxide, was efficiently eliminated from the detector so that the ion mobility spectrometer could be operated in its normal manner. The fact that CO2 did not interfere with normal ion mobility operation indicates that other supercritical fluids may also be compatible with this sensitive and versatile detection method.

Notes: The structure and properties of an unusual new polyamide copolymer derived from 2,2-bis-(4-aminoeyclohexyl)propane and a 60/40 molar mixture of azelaic and adipic acids are described. The alicyclic diamine structure, with its cyclohexyl rings and central gem-dimethyl group, contribute to chain stiffness and amorphous character in the polyamide, and sets it apart from more common polyamides (e.g., nylon 6-6) with their relatively flexible polymer chains, low glass transition temperatures and high levels of crystallinity. The particular combination of dicarboxylic acids employed yields a resin with a high glass transition temperature (185°C). This amorphous, colorless material is exceptionally transparent, with a high luminous transmission (92 percent) and low haze (0.5 percent). The polymer is tough and resistant to scratching and abrasion and to attack by chemicals and solvents. Its high glass transition temperature leads to a high heat deflection temperature (160°C) and excellent retention of its mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. It is an atypical nylon in that its dimensions, mechanical properties and electrical properties are relatively unaffected by changing moisture content.

Notes: Polyphenylene sulfide is a new engineering plastic characterized by a unique combination of useful environmental, mechanical, and flame resistant properties. This paper presents a variety of new developments in molding methods and long term properties of polyphenylene sulfide. Optimum conditions for fabrication by injection molding, compression molding, and free sintering techniques are described along with a comprehensive tabulation of mechanical, factional, and electrical properties of various filled and unfilled compositions. The effect of injection molding conditions and post-treatments, such as annealing, on mechanical behavior is discussed. Long term stability of molded specimens of the polymer to a variety of chemical environments as well as oven aging studies are reported. The significance of these properties is illustrated by a discussion emphasizing new applications for various compositions based on polyphenylene sulfide.
