Notes: The crystal structure of an infinite inorganic chain consisting of MnII and an N-centered tripodal ligand N,N-(2-pyridylmethyl)[(1-methylimidazol-2-yl)-methyl]glycinate is presented. It exhibits a chiral helical structure with a pitch of two monomeric units (each monomeric unit containing one Mn atom). Each manganese is connected to its neighbor through a carboxylate bridge in a syn-anti geometry. Around each manganese center, two carboxylates bind in a cis geometry. This peculiar bridging geometry (syn-anticis) provides a broken-line chain, running in a zig-zag manner along the b axis of the P21 space group. The magnetic properties have been investigated. They show a pseudo-2D magnetic structure, with one major pathway along the chain and an inter-chain minor one. The intrachain coupling is a weak antiferromagnetic interaction (J/k = -0.25). This low value is entirely consistent with the geometry of the bridge. The interchain coupling is a weaker antiferromagnetic coupling (J′/k = -0.11) and could be mediated through π-π interactions between pyridine and imidazole from two adjacent helixes.

Notes: Using the equilibrium-dispersive model of chromatography, we have investigated recycling as a means to improve the recovery yields and possibly the production rates of chromatographic separations. When compared with the optimal values obtained for the conventional single-cycle regime, our results prove the potential for recycling in preparative chromatography. The analysis performed for the separation of two binary mixtures demonstrates that recycling not only improves the recovery yield but can increase the production rate under certain conditions. Different possibilities of collecting sufficiently separated fractions during recycling are compared. The mathematical model developed can be used effectively for designing optimal recycling strategies in preparative liquid chromatography.

Notes: This paper is devoted to the problem of determining intraparticle transport coefficients for multicomponent adsorption from experimental kinetic curves. Due to thermodynamic and kinetic interactions between the mixture's components, this task is more difficult than for single component systems. As an example, the kinetics of adsorption on activated carbon of binary mixtures of phenol and indole from aqueous solutions was studied in a continuous stirred tank adsorber (CSTA). To describe the intraparticle transport of this system, the surface diffusion model using a linear driving force (LDF) was applied. For determining the matrix of the unknown kinetic parameters of the LDF-model, the application of three independent mathematical methods is discussed. Firstly, a semi-analytical calculation (SA) of the intraparticle transport parameters by solving a system of linear equations on the basis of an empirical description of experimental kinetic curves is put forward. Secondly, a non-linear regression (NR) method for parameter estimation was applied. The third method is a non-linear regression which, in contrast to the SA and NR methods, guarantees the stability of the system of differential equations in the steady state of the process (NRS).

Notes: The influence of a small addition (〈15 wt.-%) of an aromatic polyamide [poly(2,6-dichloro-1,4-phenylene terephthalamide) (P26C1PTA)] as additive on the textile-physical properties of cellulose filaments was investigated. The blend filaments were spun from homogeneous blend solutions prepared in the common solvent N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide. Most of the estimated properties of blend filaments containing not more than 10 wt.-% of P26C1PTA do not differ significantly from those of pure cellulose filaments. However, the wet abrasion resistance attains a maximum at a P26C1PTA content of 10 wt.-%. At higher P26C1PTA content the fibrillation tendency of the blend filaments is increased. Coincidentally, a decrease of tenacity and wet abrasion resistance was obtained.

Description / Table of Contents: Polystyryl lithium chains PStMnLi have been synthesized, where Mn is a small number of 2-vinyl pyridine or metharylonitrile end groups. These agents were investigated by UV spectroscopy and conductometry. The constants of electrolytic dissociation have been estimated. The same parameters have been determined with the alkoxy forms of the chains, which were formed by action of dimethyl formamide.

Description / Table of Contents: The anionic copolymerization of acrylonitrile with acrylates and methylmethacrylate initiated by lithium-tert-butoxide in dimethylformamide was investigated in the temperature range of -30 to +10°C. Based on the way of incorporation of the esters, the chemical inhomogeneity and the structure of the copolymers, the copolymerization parameters calculated by the model of Mayo and Lewis were examined with respect to their validity for this anionic process.

Description / Table of Contents: Synthesis and characterization of graft and block copolymers prepared of polar monomers are described. Activation of P2VP-, P4VP-, PVAC-, and PMMA-chains is necessary for subsequent addition of monomers. The reactions taking place are discussed in more detail. Well defined synthesis of block copolymers is achieved, if the short living time of AN chains is used for the addition of the monomers. The investigation of chemical heterogeneity of these copolymers is difficult.
