Notes: The particle sizes and their size distributions of latexes from the dispersion polymerization of styrene using a small amount of ω-methoxy poly(ethylene oxide)n undecyl-α-methacrylate macromonomer (PEO-R-MA-40) as a polymerizable stabilizer in ethanol-water media have been studied. Monodisperse or/and nearly monodisperse latex particles from 0.1 to 1 μm in diameter were readily obtained. The diameter of latex particles follows the relationship Dvad ∝ θ0.33 [PEO-R-MA-40]-0.60 [styrene]01.02 [AIBN]o-0.09, where θ is the fractional conversion of styrene. Except for the styrene concentration dependency, this relationship is in excellent agreement with the model developed by Paine11 and modified by Kawaguchi et al.13 When the surface composition of the grafted PEO macromonomer on the latex particles exceeded 16% as analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the particles were nearly monodisperse. In terms of polymerization, this occurred around 18% conversion of styrene. Beyond this critical state of polymerization, the latex particles grew bigger with more PEO macromonomer-styrene copolymers situated on the particle surface. The effect of various factors on the particle size distribution is also discussed. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 35: 3575-3583, 1997

Description / Table of Contents: Fatigue Limit and Cyclic Material BehaviourFatigue tests to determine the fatigue limit are very timeconsuming. Therefore a lot of possibilities have been proposed to estimate the fatigue limit, especially the so-called correlation formulae. This paper shows for carbon and low alloy steel, that the correlation between fatigue limit σW (unnotched specimen, tension-compression, mean-stress equal zero) and cyclic yield strength R′p0.2 is better than between fatigue limit and static tensile strength Rm or static yield strength Rp0,2. An additional improvement of this correlation is possible by fixing the fatigue limit on the level of the cyclic stress for a plastic strain amplitude εa, p = 0,026%. These results are based on 24 test series taken from the data collection [7].

Description / Table of Contents: Estimation of Endurance Limit under Multiaxial LoadingMultiaxial criteria for endurance limit prediction of metallic materials will be discussed in this paper. The Shear Stress Intensity Hypothesis SIH is improved under consideration of the variable fatigue limit ratio τw/σw and mean stress effects. Fatigue behaviour under synchronous and nonsynchronous stresses and influences such as mean stresses, out-of-phase stresses, different frequencies, nonsinusoidal stress time function are analysed theoretically and verified with test results. The prediction according to SIH shows good agreement with the test results. Based on an extensive statistical investigation it can be recommended to use the SIH for „crack free materials“ and the normal stress hypothesis NSH for „materials with cracks“.For components the hypothesis SIH and NSH are developed under consideration of the notch effect. In this study a concept for the prediction of endurance limit under multiaxial loads has been developed.

Description / Table of Contents: Estimation of S-N Curves under Consideration of Geometrical and Statistical Size EffectsIn this paper a concept for the estimation of fatigue limit in [11] will be extended to the calculation of S-N curves. The statistical size effect is taken into account with the well known weakest link theory. The geometrical size effect is considered according to the cyclic plastic deformation in the notch root. This model gives good correlation with test results.According to the present model the slope of the S-N curve depends on the specimen size and strength of materials, but does not depend on the stress concentration factor. The S-N curve becomes flatter with larger notch size and higher material strength.

Description / Table of Contents: Fatigue Limit and Geometrical and Statistical Size EffectThe ratio of the fatigue limit of an unnotched specimen to that of a notched one, the fatigue notch factor Kf, is usually smaller than the theoretical stress concentration factor Kt. With the assumption of a plastic cyclic deformation ∊apW at the level of the fatigue limit the fatigue limit for a notched specimen can be calculated. According to formula (4) this fatigue limit σnaD is a function of Kt, ∊apW, the notch stress amplitude σa, the cyclic strengthening exponent n′ and the fatigue limit of a smooth specimen σW. Moreover, taking into account the statistical size effect with the known “weakest link concept”, see flow chart Fig. 9, the calculation is in a good agreement with 77 test results for steel.

Notes: 4-Acetoxy 4′-carboxy biphenyl has been polymerized from solution, the bulk melt, and in constrained thin films, all below the melting point of the monomer as measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). An isothermal sublimation-recrystallization-melting (and chemical change)-polymerization-crystallization process is proposed. From solution and in the thin films, single crystals consisting of ca. 100 Å thick lamellae are observed, with evidence for monomer addition-reaction on the end (top and bottom) surfaces. The bulk samples are fibrous, the “fibers” consisting of whisker-like single crystals. The polymer is highly heat and radiation (electron beam) resistant, with numerous successive electron diffraction (ED) patterns from the same crystal or sheared sample permitting comparison of the changes in ED patterns with transitions seen by DSC at ca. 350, 530, and 590°C. Phase I (a = 7.8, b = 5.5, c = 10.8 Å), a possible phase II (a = 15.6, b = 3.6 Å c = unknown), and a phase III (a = 9.0, b = 5.2 = √3a, c = 10.8 Å). Phases I and II are seen in samples polymerized at temperatures at and below 310°C; phase III is observed in samples polymerized at and above 350°C and in sheared samples. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
