Notes: This paper describes a computer program for generating finite element meshes for electron guns. Two new methods, the ‘projection’ and the ‘mesh density function’ methods, are used to generate the mesh. The new methods enable the mesh distribution to be set smothly and changed easily, and also enable the mesh distribution to be adjusted according to parameters associated with the gun configuration or by feedback from the electric field calculation. The new program, which can handle a large variety of complicated electron gun structures, has been used in conjunction with the SOGUN program which has been developed by Zhu and Munro for electron gun simulation.

Description: Single crystals of the title compound, samarium aluminium germanium, were synthesized from the corresponding elements using molten Al metal as a solvent. The structure is isotypic with GdAl2.90Ge0.10, crystallizing in the hexagonal Ni3Sn structure type (space group P63/mmc), with two atoms in the asymmetric unit, namely Sm on Wyckoff site 2c and a statistical mixture of Al and Ge on Wyckoff site 6h. Structure refinement from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data result in the stoichiometry SmAl2.64 (4)Ge0.36 (4).

Description: Single crystals of the title compound, ytterbium hexamanganese hexastannide, were serendipitously synthesized from a reaction of elemental Yb, Mn and Bi in an Sn flux. The structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction to be an intermediate ordered state of the HfFe6Ge6 and YCo6Ge6 structures. This result confirms previous work on the structure of YbMn6Sn6 from X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data [Mazet et al. (1999). J. Magn. Magn. Mater. 204, 11–19], although the statistical distribution of Yb and Sn on the partially occupied sites is determined to be significantly different.
