Notizen: The rabbit lens can be maintained in culture under conditions which retain the block to proliferation characteristic of many of the cells in the normal tissue in vivo. Proliferation and cell migration subsequently can be triggered at will by the addition of serum to the medium. Serum is not required throughout the whole period of culture in order to elicit this response but only during an initial period which ends prior to the onset of both DNA synthesis and mitosis. The duration of this period of serum-dependency is specifically related to the location (and hence the state of organization) of the cells within the epithelial layer. Some of the characteristics of the serum factors which promote these reactions and the conditions of culture which affect their activity are reported.

Notizen: The addition reaction between melamine and formaldehyde has been kinetically separated from the subsequent condensation stage by suitable choice of concentration and temperature conditions. The reaction, which is reversible, has been monitored by estimation of the free formaldehyde content of the system. It has been investigated over the range of mean degree of methylolation 1 〈 R′ 〈 3.7 of the melamine nuclei, the temperature range 25-55°C., and the pH range 5.7-10.2. The rate data thus obtained have been treated according to the random reversible addition scheme for which reasonable, first approximation, agreement was obtained. Average kinetic and thermodynamic constants have been calculated and are discussed in terms of the present model. The factors which are likely to cause deviations from randomness are described. The addition of formaldehyde to melamine proceeds by superposition of an OH--catalyzed step with a minor solvent-catalyzed or uncatalyzed one.

Notizen: Changes in flow properties of polyethylene resins have often been observed during processing operations. Studies in this laboratory show that melt viscosity of polyethylene normally increases when the resin is heated in a compression mold at temperatures below 300°C. At the same time, the solution viscosity actually decreases in some cases. During extrusion, on the other hand, both melt viscosity and solution viscosity are shown to decrease. In addition, the logarithm of melt flow rate is seen to deviate markedly from the expected linear dependence on reciprocal of absolute temperature. The results suggest that both crosslinking and chain-scission reactions occur during processing, the former predominating at low or zero shear, the latter at high shear.

Notizen: Amyloglucosidase (EC. 3.2.1.3), partially purified from an Aspergillus species, was chemically attached to DEAE cellulose using the bifunctional reagent 2-amino-4,6-dichloro-s-triazine. The action of the insolubilized enzyme derivative on dilute maltose and dextrin solutions was studied in a packed bed. A second and deeper bed was used to demonstrate the possibility of a continuous process for raising the dextrose; equivalents of “glucose” liquors of high concentration formed by acid hydrolysis of maize starch.

Notizen: An experimental investigation is presented of the flotation of dichromate ion from aqueous solution with a cationic surfactant, ethylheaxadecyldimethylammonium (EHDA) bromide. Dichromate forms a colloidal complex with EHDA ion in a molar ratio of approximately 1 : 2. Excess surfactant causes the formation of a stable foam to which the complex is adsorbed, providing the separation of dichromate from aqueous solution. Batch flotation studies were conducted utilizing approximately 2-liter solutions containing from 10 to 200 mg. of dichromate ion (4.8 to 96.3 mg. of hevavalent chromium), with masses of EHDA-Br ranging from 400 to 800 mg. The effects of mass of surfactant added, dichromate concentration, pH, and possible interfering anions were determined. A comparison is made with pure surfactant solutions, and the mechanism of the process is discussed. Most efficient operation is achieved with a molar feed ration of EHDA ion to dichromate ion from 2.1 to 3.0, and removal ratios ranging from 80 to 95% are obtained. Reduction of the residual dichromate below 10% of the feed concentration requires additional surfactant and produces excessive foam, which could be overcome by modifications in operating conditions.

Notizen: Some of the problems encountered in adhesive bonding of plastic attachments to human tooth surfaces were investigated. Acrylic adhesives based on poly(methyl methacrylate)-methyl methacrylate monomer mixtures with benzoyl peroxide initiation and N,N-dimethylaniline acceleration were utilized. Both homopolymers and copolymers were investigated. Recently extracted upper central incisors were employed in the bonding experiments. Bond strengths were improved by pretreating the tooth surfaces with mineral acids such as H3PO4. Surface wetting by the liquid adhesive was shown to be improved by the acid treatment. The molecular weight of polymer or copolymer employed in the liquid adhesive had an important effect on bond strengths. The optimum molecular weight for obtaining maximum bond strengths was around 20,000 g./mole. Water immersion of the bonded specimens at 37°C. for periods up to 6 weeks had a deleterious effect on bond strengths. Nevertheless, it was shown that some of the adhesives formed reasonably strong bonds for periods exceeding 6 months even with water immersion.

Notizen: Surface displacements at the end of a semi-infinite, circular cylinder due to an axisymmetric ring of forces on the end are examined. The solution which has been found may then be used to find surface displacements for general axisymmetric loadings by convolution. The solution, in tabular form, is given as corrections to the counter-part half-space solution. The method of solution involves a three step superposition process. First, the displacement due to a ring of forces on a half-space is found by using the Boussinesq solution. Then, the excess tractions on the half-space, over that of the cylinder, are removed. This is done in two parts. The problem of an infinite cylinder with linearly varying pressure and shear over a short length of the lateral surface is solved by using Fourier integrals. This is used for the removal of the pressure and shear on the lateral surface of the cylinder by convolution. Next, the stresses at the mid-section of the infinite cylinder are removed. This is done by finding a set of boundary conditions for the end which yields zero tractions on the lateral surface. Then a series of these boundary conditions is used to approximate the tractions which must be removed. With the solution thus obtained, two sample problems are shown: 1. an elastic cylinder in contact with a half-space; 2. a rigid punch in contact with an elastic cylinder.

Notizen: An ‘on-line’ mass spectrometer technique which permits the examination of the effects of radiation at short times has been used to study the radiolysis of methane by reactor radiation. The mass spectrometer used was the AEI MS-10. The experiments were carried out using the UTR-100 reactor at East Kilbride and the results using highly purified methane and methane with radical scavangers are described. With pure methane at 0·25% conversion, G-values of 0·36, 0·24, 0·07 and 0·03 were calculated for C3H8, C4H10, C5H12 and C6H14 respectively. No pressure-dependent reactions were observed in the pressure range 50 to 135 torr. The effects of radical scavengers were investigated and irradiation of methane containing 1 to 2% ethylene gave G-values for C2H6, C3H8, n-C4H10, iso-C4H10, C5H12 plus C6H14, C2H2, C3H6, C4H8 and C5H10 of 1·33, 2·02, 2·03, 0·35, 0·34, 0·30, 0·37, 0·90 and 0·31. The effects of adding 1 to 2% propylene and 1 to 2% oxygen were also examined and the results are described in the paper. Experiments with smaller quantities of oxygen emphasize the importance of removing all oxygen from the system before radiolysis begins. The paper then goes on to discuss in some detail the processes involved in the radiolysis of methane and concludes with suggestions for future work.
