    Notes: An improved bisection strategy is presented to determine the eigenvalues of a real symmetric tridiagonal matrix which occurs in a simple column buckling problem. The new strategy, which involves only a minor modification, utilizes incomplete Sturm sequences only as long as relevant information on the next and following eigenvalues is obtained resulting in a minimization of the computational work. The strategy is particularly effective if only a few eigenvalues are required. The technique can be used for a wider class of eigenvalue problems than the illustrative one presented here.

    Notes: In this paper, the formulation of six-point and nine-point finite element equations for the solution of the diffusion-convection equation is presented. The six-point equation requires the solution of a tridiagonal system of equations and the nine-point centred equation is treated as a solution of a boundary value problem which leads to a large linear system of equations.Some numerical experiments are presented and the comparison with existing methods is included.

    Notes: Liquid membranes containing a macrocyclic polyether can move or pump a specific cation against its concentration gradient. The cation flux is not proportional to the difference of the cation concentration but to the difference of the product of cation and anion concentrations across the membrane.     Notes: Diffusion coefficients of argon, krypton, xenon, methane, carbon tetrachloride and the tetraalkyltins (methyl through butyl) were measured in methanol, 1-butanol and 1-octanol over the temperature range 298 to 433 K. With temperature-dependent solvent diameters fitted from the tracer diffusivity of one of the solutes, a rough-hard-sphere theory predicts well the observed tracer diffusivity over the solvent density range in which hard-sphere computer simulations are available. The Wilke-Chang correlation predicts diffusion coefficients in the higher alcohols with an average error of 80% and a maximum error of 200%. A correlation of the form Dμp/T = A where p and A depend on solute and solvent size is more successful giving an average error of 7% and a maximum error of 24%.

    Notes: The site of chain scission and crosslinking in vulcanized natural rubber irradiated with 4 MeV electrons has been determined by analysis of stress relaxation data. Sulfur and peroxide vulcanizates of different crosslink densities were prepared and the crosslink densities determined from stress-strain measurements. Stress relaxation was measured during irradiation using modified commercial relaxometers. The specimens were maintained in an atmosphere of nitrogen to minimize oxidative side effects. Scission is deduced to take place in the vicinity of crosslinks, since the rate of continuous stress relaxation is independent of crosslink density. Scission may be associated both with crosslinks initially present and with those subsequently introduced by irradiation. Crosslinking by radiation is largely a random process. However, there is a crosslinking reaction dependent to a slight extent on crosslink density as well as a small contribution from random scission reactions. G values for the random reactions are given.
