    Notes: The MHC status of epithelial cells from 32 primary colorectal neoplasms, villous adenomata (VA; 2) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD; 3) were evaluated using a panel of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). Class I antigens and β2 microglobulin (β2m) were expressed on all normal, benign, inflammatory and malignant epithelia with the exception of two carcinomas. A more complex pattern of reactivity was encountered with anti-class II mAbs. Some expression was detected on normal glandular and luminal epithelium, particularly adjacent to the tumour. Inflammatory tissues, VA and 23/32 carcinomas were also antigen-positive, the proportion of stained epithelial cells ranging from 5% to 90%. Expression was usually non-coordinate, DR being the predominant specificity followed by DP and DQ, which is suggestive of independent D region gene regulation. The hypothesis that class II expression is induced in vivo by locally generated IFN γ was not confirmed by in vitro treatment with this agent of epithelial colorectal carcinoma-derived cell lines. These provisional data suggest that although IFN γ may be a necessary stimulus for class II expression it is insufficient and that other factors also influence the responsiveness of tumour cells in this respect.

    Notes: To assess large-whale stocks following the cessation of land-based South Georgia whaling in 1965, we report three independent sighting databases: a cruise in 1997, observations from Bird Island (NW of South Georgia) between 1979 and 1998, and mariner sightings between 1992 and 1997. All species were rare, with sightings of southern right whales being the most common event. Two right whales photographed off South Georgia matched animals known from Peninsula Valdés, Argentina, a population known to be growing at 7%per annum. In contrast, blue and fin whales appeared to be less abundant. A single blue whale mother-calf pair was observed off the Shag Rocks in February 1997. Extirpation of animals from this particular feeding ground is the most likely reason for ongoing low numbers of all species. Other factors may include competition for krill by traditional predators such as penguins and seals and more recently by humans, an unusually high rate of natural mortality, habitat change such as alteration in sea ice coverage, and/or the impact of ongoing whaling. The history of this critical area of large-whale habitat and this report demonstrate the need for improved, consistent longterm monitoring of population trends for these depleted stocks.

    Notes: Tires containing nylon tire cord exhibit a temporary deformation upon standing under load. The delayed recovery from this deformation, due to the fact that the yield point of nylon is exceeded under normal inflation pressures, results in the phenomenon of “flatspotting.” Previous attempts to improve the viscoelastic characteristics of nylon by crosslinking have been discouraging on account of the general degradation of properties caused by the treatment. It has now been found that short, vapor-phase treatments with diisocyanates, particularly tolylene diisocyanate, produce nylon 6 of greatly improved flatspotting resistance, without undersirable side effects. The development of this procedure, the evaluation methods employed, and the proposed mechanism are discussed.

    Notes: The surface topography and pore structure of ultrafiltration membranes can be investigated with atomic force microscopy. In this study, it was found that the substitution of ethanol for water as the immersion medium improved the resolution of the fine structure of 10K polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membranes. Pores in the membrane surface from 7 to 9 nm in diameter were measured, which coincides with the range expected for 10,000 molecular weight cutoff (MWCO) ultrafiltration membranes. It is believed that this image enhancement results from increased damping and concomitant noise reduction resulting from the higher viscosity of ethanol in contrast to water.

    Notes: The second-generation polysulfone (PSU) gas-separation membrane is seen as a trilayer that is considerably more permeable and at least as selective as the first-generation bilayer that it has replaced. In air separation, a fourfold increase in oxygen permeabiliy has been obtained with no loss in oxygen/nitrogen selectivity. The enhanced performance is the result of a membrane skin that is not only thinner, but also exhibits increased free volume and a graded density. The key to the emergency of the trilayer morphology was the discovery of a hitherto unsuspected relationship between the size of solvent molecules within a sol and the free volume and permeability in the resultant gel! Solvent molecules with a molar volume V 〉 ˜ 147 cc/mol function as transient templates (spacers) that decrease macromolecular packing density. As a practical matter, the low diffusivity (difficult extractibility) of large solvent molecules is circumvented by the use of 1:1 Lewis acid: base (A:B) complexes such as propionic acid: N-methyl pyrrolidone instead of neat solvents. Complexes whose acid and base strengths, respectively, lie between (Gutmann 47 〈 AN 〈 53 and 27 〈 DN 〈 28) are sufficiently stable to function as templates, while at the same time exhibiting the hydrolytic instability that leads to their ready disassociation and extraction by water. Selectivity is maintained by the use of A:B complexes whose Hildebrand solubility parameters differ from that of PSU by less than ˜ 1.3 (cal/cc)½. The emergence of the trilayer membrane is considered to be the second decoupling of permeability from selectivity. By the formation of an anisotropic (graded density) skin, permeability has been increased and selectivity maintained. This is analogous to the first decoupling by Loeb and Sourirajan who essentially replaced a thick dense monolayer film with a bilayer consisting of a thin skin of uniform density in series with a thick porous substructure.
