Notes: A cylindrical electrode electrostatic analyzer has been designed for surface structure measurements which has sufficient sensitivity that shadowing/blocking data can be obtained without significantly damaging the surface structure. A modification to the standard π/(square root of)2 design compensates for that part of the spread in the ion energies due to elastic scattering kinematics. The analyzer is small enough to fit inside a standard 25 cm diameter UHV chamber on a turntable, allowing angular distribution measurements over a wide range of scattering angles. An example of a shadowing/blocking angular scan of a clean Si(100) surface is shown. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Thin films of 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) liquid crystal have been fabricated by pulsed laser deposition. The suitability of different lasers (ArF, KrF and CO2) has been investigated over a range of fluence using visible-UV and infrared absorption and optical microscopy to characterise the films. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and matrix assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectroscopy (MALDI-MS) were used to assess the extent of decomposition of the films. The results suggest that the CO2 laser acts as a quasi-steady heat source, while for ArF laser irradiation severe photodecomposition is observed. However, use of the KrF laser allows the production of excellent quality submicron films, showing properties similar to the 5CB target with only slight photodecomposition. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A simple method is reported for the post-polymerization partial p-carboxylation of linear polystyrene without degradation or crosslinking of the polymer. The method is based on Friedel-Crafts acetylation of the polystyrene under mild conditions, followed by oxidation of the acetyl groups by means of a phase-transfer-catalyzed haloform reaction. The method is well suited for the synthesis of high molecular mass, monodisperse ionomers with p-carboxylate groups situated randomly along the polystyrene chain. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The high-temperature dispersions occurring in some poly (styrene-co-alkali methacrylate) ionomers are investigated by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis as a function of ion content. The heights and areas of the loss modulus peaks associated with these dispersions suggest that the ionic “cluster” phase becomes the dominant and perhaps even continuous phase above an ion concentration of ca. 6 mol %. Apparent activation energies of these high-temperature transitions support the phase-separated cluster model and indicate that the dispersions are true glass transitions.

Notes: Raman and far-infrared spectra of solid CBr4 at temperatures between 20 K and the melting point, 365 K, have been recorded. Low-temperature results are compared with earlier data and with the predictions of a group theoretical analysis based on the known crystal structure. Isotopic and crystal field effects are distinguished. The number of Raman peaks, especially in the lattice and v3 regions, is compatible with a large unit cell. Certain features are interpreted with the help of recent spectra and calculations on solid SnBr4, Which has a similar unit cell.
