Notizen: Collagen has been widely coated or grafted onto polymer surfaces to improve the biocompatibility of materials. To better support the growth of endothelial cells on polyurethane (PU), collagen was grafted to the carboxyl group enriched PU through 1,2-bis(2,3-epoxypropoxy)ethane linking. Our results demonstrated that collagen in various conditions may result in different forms being grafted to the PU substrate, which subsequently affected the growth of endothelial cells. Collagen predialyzed against physiological phosphate buffered saline (PBS) could be reconstituted into native type fibrils with a bigger diameter at 37°C than could collagen neutralized by titration with NaOH. At low temperature, titrated collagen formed flosslike fibrils packed in a ball with cobblestonelike morphology. The amount of collagen grafted was related to the condition of the collagen used, which in consequence affected the diameter of the collagen fibril formed and the growth of endothelial cells. In conclusion, reconstituted collagen fibrils formed from collagen in PBS at 37°C grafted in the highest amounts to an epoxy-PU substrate and that optimally supported the growth of endothelial cells. Such prepared materials may be potentially good vascular bioprosthetic materials and may provide a wide range of biological applications. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: An explicit time-domain transmitting boundary for the analysis of dam-reservoir interactions is presented. This transmitting boundary is a semi-analytical solution of the governing wave equation of the far field of the reservoir. By using this transmitting boundary, the radiation condition and water compressibility can readily be incorporated in the time-domain analysis of dam-reservoir systems. Therefore, the finite element method can be used to accurately analyse a dam-reservoir system including the semi-infinite reservoir while maintaining its efficiency in time-domain analysis. Numerical results have excellent agreement with the available analytical solution. Results also show that the proposed explicit transmitting boundary is more efficient computationally than the implicit transmitting boundary presented by Tsai and Lee.

Notizen: In this paper, an advanced analytical model and finite element formulations including local bending moment effects for the Friction Pendulum System (FPS) are presented. Some important findings in these investigations reveal that local bending moments which result from the movements of the isolator, should be accounted for in the engineering design. The results presented in this paper show that if the effects of local bending moments are excluded from design considerations, it may endanger structures during earthquakes. The new formulations considering local effects provide an effective tool to simulate the behaviour of FPS-isolated structures subjected to earthquake loadings. The proposed formulations can be applied directly for both two- and three-dimensional analyses without any further assumption. It is easy to implement the proposed techniques in existing finite element programs. The results obtained from the numerical analyses suggest that the local bending moment effects are of significant importance, and should be taken into account to assure the safety of isolated structures during earthquakes. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: Waves reflecting obliquely from structures establish short-crested waves which are conducive to scour of the bed adjacent to them. The pore pressures and effective stresses induced by this wave system are derived analytically for an unsaturated, anisotropic soil matrix of infinite depth in a three-dimensional domain. Verification is available by the solutions being readily reduced to the two-dimensional cases of the progressive and standing wave, for which some closed-form solutions are available. It is shown that wave obliquity is coupled with soil permeability. The effects of wave obliquity, relative water depth, soil stiffness and soil permeability on wave-induced pore pressure are discussed in detail.

Notizen: The preparation of a new form of ionomer is described. This class of material is based on the polymerization of a neutral monomer with a small amount of a cationic-anionic monomer pair. The resulting ionomers are ampholytic in character and contain no inorganic ions. In this investigation, the polymerization of styrene with 3-methacrylamidopropyldimethylammonium and trimethylammonium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonate in a variety of solvents is described.

Notizen: In this article are described the solution properties of ampholytic ionomers obtained by the radical copolymerization of styrene with the ion-pair comonomer 3-methacrylamidopropyltrimethylammonium, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonate. The solution properties were studied in mixed solvents, with a good solvent for the polystyrene backbone and another for the ionic moieties, and in the individual good solvent of benzyl alcohol. The data obtained strongly support extensive intermolecular ionic interactions in solution.
