Notes: The mixing efficiency of simple and pitched paddles, marine propellers, and centrifugal and disk impellers was determined by a heat transfer method in a single stage of a large pump-mix mixer-settler. The mixing devices were from 3 to 5 in. in diameter and were tested with a refined kerosene as the organic phase and water as the aqueous phase.A heat conductance was calculated from flow parameters and the efficiency and was correlated against impeller design and speed variables. For centrifugal and disk impellers UA was proportional to n1.2L3b0.3; for the paddles UA was proportional to n1.67L2.5b0.42. At normal operating speeds controlled variation of the internal recirculation of mixed phases through a centrifugal impeller did not change the efficiency.

Notes: The tensile strength and elongation at break of EPR and SBR gum vulcanizates were determined as a function of network chain density. A large viscous contribution to the tensile force was found at low crosslink density, and the maximum in the tensile strength versus chain density curve decreased as more nearly equilibrium conditions were approached. The rate dependence of tensile strength of black-filled EPR was studied by creep rupture experiments. The temperature dependence of the tensile strength of filled EPR and SBR was studied and compared. The same limiting degree of cure was obtained for both filled and gum vulcanizates of EPR.

Notes: Data are presented for the preparation of high molecular weight and crystalline polymers of allylbenzene. With specific cationic catalysts, low molecular oligomers of β-methylstyrene are produced. With anionic catalysts, such as sodium and cesium, nonpolymerizable metallates are obtained from which the monomer may be regenerated. Stereospecific catalysts, prepared from triethylaluminum and titanium halides have been investigated as catalysts for allylbenzene. Solid polymers of allylbenzene have been obtained only under very specific catalytic conditions.

Notes: Polycondensation of ethylene dichloride and 3,3′-iminobis(propylamine) resulted in high molecular weight soluble polymers or insoluble gels, depending on the ratio of the reactants and the extent of reaction. It is shown that the functionality of a polyfunctional compound containing groups of unequal reactivities can be determined experimentally. The effective functionality of 3,3′-iminobis(propylamine) was found to be 2.9 from gelation studies and 3.5 based on the relative reaction rates of the primary and secondary amino groups. By using the effective functionality value, the reaction kinetics can be treated in a simple manner. A typical soluble polymer formed has a low intrinsic viscosity and a very high M̄w/M̄n ratio. Condensations of other alkylene dichlorides and alkylene polyamines demonstrated the validity of Carothers' rule that high polymers will not result if formation of 5- or 6-membered rings is possible.

Notes: On irradiation of polyethylene at 142° with Co60 γ-rays the ability of the linear chains to crystallize from the melt is significantly reduced. This effect is about two and one half times as pronounced in a linear polyethylene with terminal (vinyl) unsaturation as it is in a linear polyethylene with internal (vinylene) unsaturation. The decay, during the irradiation, of initially present vinylene groups apparently leads to endlink rather than to crosslink formation. This fact suggests the conclusion that the vinylene groups initially present in the linear polyethylene must be located near the ends of the polymeric chains. The greater effect of vinyl unsaturation in causing inhibition of crystallization compared with that of vinylene unsaturation is due to the greater decay constant of the vinyl group - about threefold that of the vinylene group.

Notes: Betanin, the violet-red pigment of the beet, and its aglucone, betanidin, were converted by mild methods to several derivatives of a new structure, called neobetanidin. On the basis of elementary analyses, transformations, color changes with acid, mass-spectrographic evidence and especially nmr-spectra it was possible to assign structures II to X to these derivatives of neobetanidin. As examples of the nmr-spectra in which all signals could be identified those of II and VIII are discussed in detail and compared with model compounds. It is evident that neobetanidin incorporates a dihydroindol-and a pyridin-ring, an enamin bond, three carboxyl functions, two phenolic hydroxyl groups and a weakly basic nitrogenous polymethine system of the cyanin type.

Notes: A choice between structures I and III for betanidin is now possible in favour of I on the basis of the formation of a well-characterized di-O-acetylderivative (II). The instability of betanidin and its ready transformation into other products at elevated pH's are shown to be due to its sensitivity to atmospheric oxygen. Betanidin and Isobetanidin have the same (namely S) configuration at C-2 and may differ only in the configuration at C-15. A possible biogenetic path is proposed.

Notes: The basic requirements for optimization of filament-wound pressure vessels are a high strength-to-density ratio of the fiberglass-resin composite and an arrangement of the glass fibers in such fashion that each fiber carries, at a given pressure, the same constant load throughout the cylindrical portion as well as the end closures. The basic relations governing the isotensoidal design are derived, and the ideal shape of the end closure is defined. The relative merits of geodesic and “in-plane” wrapping are discussed. Structrual efficiencies accomplished in several practical applications are reviewed.

Notes: The polymer-solvent interaction parameter for an ethylene-propylene terpolymer containing 53 mole-% ethylene was determined as a function of degree of crosslinking in n-heptane and benzene. A well characterized EPR gum vulcanizate was used to obtain the polymer-solvent interaction parameter in fourteen solvents, and the cohesive energy density of the terpolymer was evaluated. The composite tensile creep curves for gum and filled EPR vulcanizates were obtained and compared with SBR creep curves.
