Notes: 2:1 styrene-polysulfone was subjected to an alkaline degradation with potassium tert-butoxide in dimethylsulfoxide at 50°C. A random and not an unzipping degradation was operating throughout the decomposition and β-phenylbutyrophenone and other materials were obtained as the products, indicating dimeric and head to tail sequences are dominating in the polymer chain.NMR spectrometry was also undertaken to get a further information on the chain constitution, where repeating (—St—St—SO2—) sequence is believed to be the principal part of the polymer chain as compared to the NMR spectra of polystyrene, poly-α-methyl-styrene, and the high styrene containing styrene-polysulfone.

Notes: The molecular motion of low molecular weight polychlorotrifluroethylene of different molecular weights between 500 and 1300 was investigated by means of broad-line nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. The line width and second moment of the resonant absorption lines were obtained at temperatures from 77 to 300°K. The line narrowing for low molecular weight samples takes place in one step. In samples higher than 900 in molecular weight, however, there appears to be a glass transition process, and the line narrowing tends to occur in three steps. The line narrowing due to local molecular motion becomes observable with increasing molecular weight.

Notes: Some alicyclic poly-1,3,4-oxadiazoles were prepared from cycloalkanedicarboxylic dihydrazides or from cycloalkanedicarboxylic acids and hydrazine sulfate by solution polycondensation in polyphosphoric acid. These polymers were characterized by high melting temperature. Their preparations and physical properties, such as solubility, crystallinity and thermal stability, are described.

Notes: In order to obtain tractable aromatic poly(1.3.4-oxadiazoles), the polycondensation of pyridinedicarboxylic dihydrazides has been investigated according to the solution polycondensation procedure using fuming sulfuric acid or polyphosphoric acid as solvent and condensing agent. The resulting polymers were not wholly composed of the 1.3.4-oxadiazole structure, and their molecular weights were rather low (ηsp/c up to 0.18 dl/g).Some properties of the polymers, such as IR- and UV-spectra, solubility, and thermal stability, were compared with those of authentic poly(pyridine-1.3.4-oxadiazoles).

Notes: Polyphenylene-1,3,4-oxadiazoles have been prepared from benzenedicarboxylic acids or their derivatives and hydrazine by solution polycondensation in fuming sulfuric acid or polyphosphoric acid. These polymers were characterized by good thermal stability, and the molecular weights attained were high enough for the products to exhibit fiber-or-film-forming properties. Concentrated sulfuric acid and polyphosphoric acid were the only solvents for these polymers.

Notes: A new ring-opening reaction of 1,3,4-oxadiazole by methylating reagents was developed in fuming sulfuric acid or polyphosphoric acid and then, by applying this reaction to poly-p-phenylene-1,3,4-oxadiazole, a high molecular weight poly-N-methylterephthalylhydrazide was obtained. Various methylating reagents were investigated as ring-opening reagents. The degrees of ring-opening in polymers were estimated and related to the properties of the polymers.
