Notes: Removal of liquid from filter cakes can be accomplished by mechanical or hydraulic methods after cake formation is complete. This paper deals with the latter procedure. The local porosity in porous beds (Tiller and Cooper, 1962) is a function of hydraulic pressure distribution and cake compressibility. Calculation of average porosity requires an integration of local values as determined by liquid flow patterns. As most compressions of filter cakes are irreversible, the local porosity is a function of the maximum effective pressure (frictional pressure loss) reached during cyclical operations. Reversal of flow through a cake develops radically changed pressure distributions which can be utilized to reduce local porosities. Analytical expressions are presented for reduction of average porosity brought about by reversing flow of liquid in plate-and-frame and recessed plate filter presses.

Notes: Much of the theory of gravity sedimentation has been based on the work of Coe and Clevenger (1916) and Kynch (1952). They provided methods for obtaining rates of sedimentation in batch, static tests which are presently used for design of continuous thickeners. Kynch assumed that a first order partial differential equation controlled the entire sedimentation process. His equation was based on: (1) continuity balance; and (2) sedimentation velocity being a unique function of solid particulate concentration. A general solution was presented in the form of volume fraction of solids φs = f(x - vt). During the constant rate fall of the upper interface, the boundary condition of uniform initial concentration combines with the Kynch equations to adequately describe the sedimentation phenomena. Kynch ignored the sediment rising from the bottom of the settling chamber, and assumed that the characteristics y = x - vt originated at the origin of coordinates (height, time) during the first falling rate period. The characteristics actually originate at the surface of the rising sediment where the upward liquid velocity affects the rate of fall of the particulates. New equations have been derived based upon the assumption that the characteristics emanate from the rising sediment.

Description / Table of Contents: Building Units of Oligosaccharides, LIII. - Synthesis of Trisaccharides Containing 3-Deoxy-D-manno-2-octulosonic Acid (KDO)The disaccharide 9 consisting of two glucosamine units reacts with the pyranosyl bromide of 3-deoxy-D-manno-2-octulosonic acid (KDO) 11 to give the KDO-containing trisaccharides 12 and 14 of which the α-glycosidically linked isomer 12 is the most preponderant product. In a series of deblocking steps the free trisaccharide α-KDO-(2→3)-β-D-GlcNAc-(1→6)-D-GlcNAc 18 could be obtained from 12. The assignment to the α-glycosidic linkage of the KDO unit in 12 has been established by converting 19 into the lactone 20.

Notes: The silver staining procedure of Oakley et al. [3] has been applied to parotid saliva proteins and certain protein standards fractionated by isoelectric focusing and electrophoresis in denaturing and non-denaturing polyacrylamide gels. This staining method was up to 100-fold more sensitive than Coomassie Blue staining for sodium dodecyl sulphate-containing gels and for focusing gels, after prefixation. In non-denaturing gels, however, the relative sensitivity (i.e. silver vs. Coomassie) of different bands varies widely but this can be overcome by silver staining of gels after Coomassie Blue staining.

Notes: para-Phenylenediamine sulfate polymerized with 1,4-bis(trichloromethyl)benzene in SO3 at 〉 20% polymer concentration to form highly anisotropic (liquid crystalline) sulfonated poly(para-phenyleneterephthalamide) (S-PPT) solutions with inherent viscosities as high as 1.2. Analogous to the polymerization of para-phenylenediamine sulfate with terephthalic acid in SO3 reported previously, sulfonation of the aromatic diamine ring of S-PPT was not competitive with the polymerization reaction, but it was a major side reaction.

Notes: The mass spectra of arylpentamethyldisiloxanes, sym-diaryltetramethyldisiloxanes and 1,5-diaryl-1,1,3,3,5,5-hexamethyltrisiloxanes were examined. Isotopic labeling and peak matching were used to substantiate the proposed fragmentation mechanisms. Siliconium ions dominate the spectra. Loss of neutral fragments from the [M-15]+ ions is important. Phenylpentamethyldisiloxane, sym-tetramethyldiphenyldisiloxane and 1,1,3,3,5,5-hexamethyl-1,5-diphenyltrisiloxane are representative examples of the three classes of compounds discussed. The [M-15]+ ion of phenylpentamethyldisiloxane loses methane, dimethylsilanone [(CH3)2Si=O] and phenylmethylsilanone [PhCH3Si=O] to yield daughter siliconium ions. The [M-15]+ ion of sym-tetramethyldiphenyldisiloxane loses benzene, methane, dimethylsilanone and phenylmethylsilanone to yield daughter siliconium ions. The [M-15]+ ion of 1,1,3,3,5,5-hexamethyl-1,5-diphenyltrisiloxane loses benzene, tetramethylcyclodisiloxane and phenyltrimethylcyclodisiloxane to yield daughter siliconium ions. Finally, doubly charged ions are important in the mass spectra of the three series of aryl substituted di- and trisiloxanes discussed.
